Is there anyone here brave/foolish enough to admit that they don't "get" Supercollider?
It's all very admirably produced etc etc but it's just not very enjoyable - I find myself merely irritated by Lidell's growls and whoops and I have heard much more interesting noises and beats on other Vogel records - Rescate 137 is one of my favourite records of the last years .
Just MHO like.
Don't get me wrong - I need to see them live and I will be attending Werk - but I was testing the water a little bit.

i think a more relevant question is there anyone that actually does like super_collider? apart from the 12 people on the board that do, that is (thanks guys)
it doesnt seem like it and its pretty hard sometimes to carry on especially when on our own message board all we seem to get is people wanting to burst this imaginary bubble of popularity.
Orang Utan: check them out live, it might make more sense. you cant like everything. if you dont like them, hey, dont listen to them. i bet you could go the whole rest of your life wihtout ever accidentally hearing a collider track...

i agree.i love s_c...that hows i found this board to begin with.now that emma has posted a thread on this matter i agree.but i will be a little more harsh and say what jukka said,if your not all about the whole thing then why are you here?there are many other site thats cater to your likings and 6.6 billiion more people to converse with.so there ya go,and remeber your a guest.just a guest!!none of us are above and not to say that i cant disagree with s_c,lidell or cristian but hey have some respect.these guys work for a living and im sure they appreicate the critisim but volitary hits to below the belt is uncalled for."if you dont have any thing nice to say than dont say anything at all"/p

same for me - i found this board after i saw the super_collider show in the AB in Brussels and it works really well for me.
I already knew there albums and i like them a lot but seeing them life made me listen over and over again...and made me realise S_C is fucking brilliant...R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

I myself have been a fan of lidell and vogel for some time, but never heard about s_c untill I had been on this board for some time and raw digits came out. I picked up the ep on vinyl and liked it immensely but due to being broke I still have not picked up raw digits. while I was at school though a good friend of mine gave me his copy of head on and when I took it home and listened to I was floored. head on was done in 99 and IMO is still years ahead of anything else. so I can only imagine what raw digits will be like.
s_c is certainly not for everyone, because of the style of music and the sounds. but half the time I just think it is over most peoples heads.

personally i absolutely love the track messagesacomin...but the rest of the lp has not moved me in any great way. yet. i don't find it offensive, but i don't get excited. however, experimental music can take ages to grow on you. i remember i bought the black dog's 'bytes' when it first came out, and it took me about a year to realise how good it was. my initial response was a string of question marks??????????????? and now it doesn't sound all that freaky. so i keep my mind open for a time when i'll be in the right mood to 'get ' raw digits... i'm sure i'd love it live if i had some nice herbs.
but the criticism of the guy's criticism - he just said that he doesn't 'get it'. there was no personal attack, merely an honest opinion. which may or may not provoke an interesting conversation about the music of super_collider. surely that is what this site is for..?

poor orang utan he was the straw that broke the camel's back. it was the stuff that's happening in the nofuture release thread, i was just pissed off by that and was just totally fed up with yet more criticism. so on another day i probably wouldnt have bothered to say much, and yes what he said was perfectly acceptable.
if you read what i say its not that bad though. im like the russian police in the Jackass gumball rally special..."firm...firm but fair"

Hmm, I must have said it a dozens times on this board, I love Raw Digits, its almost easily my fave records of 2002 (The Streets came in a close second) and certainly one of the best in my collection - Super_Collider are ace.
However, I do like to play my music to other people (although I'm not a DJ) and while there are more people that don't like it than do, what really pisses me off is that small minority of people that come back and tell me its shit and why, in their obviously oh so well informed opinion, it's shit.
These people do my head in, firstly why are they telling me this. I've bought the album and am playing it to them while singing its praises, do they think I'm suddenly going to be won over by their ill-informed opinions and turn the records into lampshades (such arrogance). Secondly, they're wrong, badly wrong and I feel sorry for them for not realising that. However, rather than rub their noses in it. I usually fall back on this:
There's no such thing as bad music, there's only music that bores you; music that you enjoy; and music that you don't understand, yet!
Of course its very easy to get the first and the last mixed up, particularly if you let your mind be guided by the self inflated opinions of music journalists or you have become 'stuck' and forgotten how to enjoy new things (it a danger of growing up, I'm told)...
Sadly such sentiments don't shift records, but I can't wait to see Super_Collider in Feb, I've never seen them before, I'm really looking forward to it...

i've made an interesting discovery about 'raw digits': i also take it with me everytime i'm allowed to spin records somewhere and it's kind of strange; people who normally don't listen to "experimental" music seem to have much less problems accepting it. they come asking what it is while some of that sophisticated "i'm so underground"-folks find it quite dificult to listen to.
i wonder why that is??

Because it dosn't fall in to a nice little "Undergound" Box...
I personally thought Raw Digits was more accessable than Head On, love both of them tho..

Thats it amble!
There are a lot more of pontential listeners around. But they don´t know it yet....
In the beams is a blast, also gravity rearrangin is killer. The whole record is cool. It has took some time for me to enjoy this record really.
I gave it my brother to his birthday, and he is not really into electronic music anymore, and he was overwhelmed by this stuff. He loves it.

Ooops! It seems as though my comments have come at a rather sensitive time but I am rather non-plussed at the brouhaha.
I am baffled at why some of you so touchy about someone else's music? I am a fan of a lot of music that no one else seems to like but it doesn't bother me if people criticise it. Why should it? People have a said a lot worse than I have said (colleagues often titter at my choice for the office stereo, making remarks about it sounding like a blind man playing cricket in a lighthouse, but do I get annoyed? No. I just think they're either ignorant or have different tastes to me, depending on how charitable I am feeling that day).
I liked Darn Cold Way Of Lovin and have a been a big fan of Vogel ever since Ninja.
On the strength of many many recommendations from friends and boards like this, I went out and bought Raw Digits. I listened to it many times and didn't enjoy it. I thought it would be worthwhile stating that opinion. Since so many people were raving about it, I though it was important to point out that not everyone agrees. I thought I did so respectfully and constructively.
Mr Vogel has been producing music for many years and I am sure he is thick-skinned enough to take a criticism from a sole punter who hasn't liked just one aspect of his work. As I see it, it seems the only people getting upset are the fanboys (or girls - though it's usually boys in my experience who get so precious). It reminds me of the my old NME-reading days, when the paper's letters page was inundated by outraged missives every time a journalist gave a bad or indifferent review to their favourite band. I always imagined the bands in question sitting back and laughing at such protective adoration. It was farcical and it is farcical now.
Why shoot someone down in flames for expressing an opinion?
If I can't express my own opinion, then I will go away as requested, but I'd like to stay because this forum offers a lot of food for thought and has pointed the way to a lot of good music that I would have otherwise been unaware of.
Anyway, this is about Werk, so I am sorry for appearing to hijack the thread with a negative comment. I will be going along to check them out live because I still have an open mind (you need one of these if you are to entertain the idea that other people can have opinions) and I hope (fuck, I know) that what I have said hasn't put anyone off going to the gig or buying any of the records.
See y'all down the Spitz!

yes orang certainly stated his opinion in a fairly constructive way. as opposed to some other things I have seen posted like on the OL board. where some person just shows up and starts a thread and starts bashing someone or something. I hope the live show you see orang will change your mind. and if not than so be it. no one loves everything.
on a lighter note, in response to orang's mention of music at work I have a little anectdote. when I was still in high school I was working at a one-hour photo lab developing and printing peoples pictures. my boss was rather cool and let me listen to whatever music I wanted to on saturdays. so one saturday I was listening to an old frankie bones mix cd. this lady was picking up her photos and there was a track playing with some deep mechanical sounds and gurgling bass. upon hearing it the lady asked my boss if there was something wrong with one of the machines. his response was: "no, it is his music" poiting at me. she gave me a rather puzzled look and then walked away. so I guess it wasn't her cup of tea either.

i was lucky enough to find mono samples of four tracks from Raw Digits on the i-net last summer.
i prefer to listen to 'in the beams' first (my fave), then 'soily soil'(2nd) then collide n conquer', ...
if i could criticise in any way - i should say that the cd does not last long enough, so i wish for a double cd next please

i think you should realise through reading through the posts that people were not really getting pissed off with you, they were responding to my dejected response and the things being said elsewhere on the board. ive explained myself in various posts now, you are always welcome here but you asked what you knew to be a controversial question so you have to expect some strong responses.
of course the band dont care most of the time, as you can see in the nofuturereleases forum cristian set up a "negative super_collider review thread" and we post some interesting negative reviews. we've always done that. but sometimes its hard to not care...
see you at werk!

i think super collider are amazing. they hit the spot for me nicely. the world for me is a much better place with them. i saw them play in ireland ages ago. there was about 4 people in the audience but they still rocked the spot.

I find it interesting that most people think "Raw Digits" is more accessible than "Head On", I rather tend to think it's the other way round. I've been liking S_C's work since I first heard "Darn...", but "Raw Digits" is much more trippy and dream-like, much less "clear" or sharp than "Head On" (which is not a negative aspect of course). So it took me quite longer to "get" "Raw Digits" than "Head On".

I still haven't, adored Head On mind. Raw Digits just never seems to get going, the songs all start hopefully and all the elements are there... it sounds like Super_Collider from before, but then they seem to wander off into an almost random sounding wash of grunts and crackles. Each track on Head On sounded like a seperate entity, whereas those on Raw Digits seem almost homogenised.
Head On was different and exciting, Raw Digits is flowery and fussy.
Maybe I just haven't spent enough time listening to it... I just always end up concentrating on something else!
I'd come and check them out live, I would love to. I imagine a bit of live raw edge could make all the difference, but I won't go into London at the moment because of poison gas.
Lady E
9th January 2003, 13:07
i think all that poison gas stuff is nonsense. personally i find london a bit of a pain to go to even without terrorism. but i think everyone should come to the S_C gig, obviously!
actually the spitz is a really cool venue. ive seen vvm and bobby conn there. bobby conn ruled, naturellement.

It becomes apparent that everyone describes Raw Digits differently, even though we are all hearing the same.
I love Raw Digits v .much :)

dog's 'bytes' when it first came out, and it took me about a year to realise how good it was. my initial response was a string of question marks??????????????? and now it doesn't sound all that freaky.
man. i feel weird saying this, but you're the first person i've ever heard say that they didn't absolutely adore this record the first time they'd heard it. back when bytes came out, i was very much in my third first blush of tkno lurve, and wanted very badly to like the thing. i listened to it tens of times under various manners, and even bribed bouncers to let me in to see them the one time they played in sf. nothing worked. despite years of listening to weird ass music, i'd finally found something that was totally over my head. it must sound retarded to most of you, but seriously...BLACK DOG BOTHERED ME. it didn't last long, mind you. a few years after my abortive attempt at enjoying their music live, i found travelling abroad, rarely thinking of the band at all, until i found myself staying at a guesthouse in this small town on the thai-lao border and happened to espy a copy of bytes amongst the bob marley and lynyrd skynryd tapes they had on hand for their patrons' entertainment. i brought it back to my room and gave it a listen... after n months of vibrant life, nightmarish bus rides, near death djing experiences, and black hole loneliness, hearing the album was like recieving a bowl of soup from a long dead friend. i made a dub and listened to it almost nonstop for what felt like ages. still do, sometimes. it's a good record. yes.
i think supercollider's music is good, too. furthermore, i suspect that, regardless of whether i or you or any other dapper, skirtpants-wearing tastemaker we might know agrees with me, they'll keep on making music. and that's beautiful, yo...
