just curious about getting some input on a decent condenser that will offer some mobility and also impecable sound.im shooting for the $500 usd range and preferably lower. just wanted to see if anyone had any recomendations.i have been refrenced to akg and others but considering my knowledge only covers the basic dynamic range of mics,im clueless when it comes to the condenser field of mics.!!also was curious about these mics called /shotguns_?not sure, someone told me herbert sometimes uses them for live performance and the idea sounds great.thanks/pille

a shotgun microphone is used to record sound from a very long distance, like up to 100 meters or something.

as for a good brand or model, I'm clueless..
however, remember that when using condenser microphones you gotta have a phantom power supply (basic stuff you probably already know about, still it's worth mentioning).

;)

Basically, shotgun mics have a narrower field of pick up then a normal mic, but also a larger range as stated above. If you're standing in the foodcourt of your local mall and wish to pick up a specific conversation going on across the room, then you want a shotgun mic.

Btw- does anybody know a brand name, or how much a portable phantom power unit costs? I've got phantom power on my mixers, but I'm not sure how that would work in the field.

Ohh.. check this out as well, looks pretty cool and informative:

*** add note: I often dreamed of doing that aforementioned food court idea, but nowadays standing far away from people in public places, whilst pointing black and vaguely threatening objects at them wouldn't fly in the current political climate (particularly being a black, & pseudo radical looking person like I am). Even still, concept albums of that nature sound very interesting.

i didn't have too much money to spend on my condenser mic (only about $200). i ended up getting a marshall mxl2001 & mxl603 combo and i'm pretty happy. i don't honestly know too much about mics, but they sounded really nice and i got a good price (former employee of music store discount... ;) ). the combo allows a lot of uses, and the smaller mxl603 is nice to take out for field recordings. i'd like to get a really nice mic, but i can't afford anything right now.
