i didn't know whether or not to post this here or in another forum but i'll get to the point. im finally, after many years of just using other people's computers, am going to purchase my own. i want to be able to work on music and maybe learn how to do graphics.
i need to keep it under $1,000 (if possible) and was wondering if anyone here has some suggestions for me (ie Mac or PC) seeing as how you are all so adept at using these damn things (and i dont know many people who use computers for writing/producing music) i thought i'd ask the no-future family.
you can PM me if you wan't so as to not carry on what might otherwise be a dull thread for the board.
peace-

well. i will keep it simple but my opioions is if your going to focus on graphics and music and nothing much more than that i would buy a mac.i dont own a mac,but i know mac.unless you know your shit and can rock the hell out of a pc,and know your troubleshooting, then pc can be a hassle.:)i own 6-7 pc's.and have endless waiting to be rebuilt.i would throw them all away except one for a mac.but mac's are expensive and do a little damage to your checkbook.but keep in mind your buying quality and a machine made for you.they both have pro's and con's.do some research and see the popular vote for the type of applications your wanting to run:)peace man,and if you choose to buy a pc.i will help you with finding the parts and building it yourself,it fairly easy and you'll save tons of money in the long run....i used to live by this saying but here it is......"the best computer you will ever buy is the computer you build yourself."/punshk]pille'

buy a mac. they're basically the standard in the design world, and they sure hold their own in the music world as well. for under $1000, you should be able to get an older model iMac (you can still buy them new), a new eMac, a new iBook (basic model), or you can buy a good older unit: a blue & white G3 tower, a G3 "Pismo" or "Lombard" laptop (these were their first laptops to have usb, the "Wallstreet" was the last to have mac serial (adb)). yes, macs are a little more expensive, but they're so much easier to make your own. ever try to delete a program off of a pc? mac programs (for the most part) don't spread roots into countles subfolders in your directory tree. your program is all self-contained in one folder (except for maybe an extension or two which are easily trackable). but all that tech stuff is besides the point. i was at first a pc guy and hated macs. then i got into design and sound and i switched teams. now i hate pcs and would never part with my beloved mac (yes i know i have become a geek).
sorry for the autobiography.. but i hope this helps.

damm you creative people always wanting to use macs lol
a PC will probably cost you less, but pille is right that you are likely to have some pretty big stumpers getting the thing to work properly, especially if you're a newbie like yourself.
so in the end it might well be that the mac costs a bit more over the counter, but it'll prolly let you get down and actually make some tracks/gfx with less effort on the technical side than a pc...
