New dispute

U.S. government criticizes ARD film about Afghanistan massacres

Another conflict dulls the German American relationship. "The massacre in Afghanistan" protests solidly the radiation of the controversial documentary movie for the U.S. government in ARD. The film of the Irishman Jamie Doran seems to cover cruel war crimes of the Americans. The U.S. State Department disputes the reproaches.

Hamburg/Washington hardly are relationship provisionally detoxifies between Germany and America, a new diplomatic disagreement threatens the political. An ARD documentation about a massacre in Afghanistan which shall be radiated on this Wednesday (21.55 hours) has led to heavy criticism of the U.S. government.

The documentation according to, this one in Germany the title " the massacre in Afghanistan -- have the Americans watched one's activities "? carries, 3000 have disappeared under the supreme command of the U.S. forces of altogether 8000 captured Taliban during the Afghanistanfeldzugs. The disarmed God warriors should be brought to the city of Scheberghan by the fortress Kalai Dschangi to prison but many never arrived according to the investigations of Doran there. The Dokumentarfilmer collected proofs of it, that according to an information of its own in Afghanistan the men murdered away and following have been in a mass grave located at Scheberghan in the desert verscharrt. According to statement of eyewitnesses this happened under the eyes of U.S. soldiers.

The State Department, Larry Schwartz, is, "mysterious the facts completely are wrong why a respected television organization wants to show a documentation and the U.S. mission characterizes which in an unfair way in Afghanistan for us" the speaker criticized. U.S. circles held "left" elements which wanted to discredit the U.S. military action in Afghanistan responsible for the continuance of the reproaches. The 45-minute feature program was already shown to Rai at the British transmitter Channel 5 and for the Italian sending institution according to information of ARD.

NDR culture television boss Thomas Schreiber explained in Hamburg on Tuesday that eyewitnesses would have seen U.S. soldiers both at the events in Scheberghan and at the place of the mass grave in Dascht-I Leili. In addition, the statement of the U.S. State Department is in clear contradiction to the details of the Pentagon to which there hasn't been any examination of the events by the U.S. forces till now made in the film. For the unequivocal clearing up an internal examination of the U.S. Ministry of Defense as well as the exhumation of the mass graves and the post-mortem examination and identification of the corpses are therefore necessary by the Uno.

In front of a Uno committee, on Monday, Jamie Doran had to say, said that all witnesses questioned by him would have agreed, at the presentation of his film in Berlin. The free writer-director demanded even a "witness protection program" because already two men have been murdered within the weeks after the lathe works. According to information from Doran the documentation was sold in eleven countries in the meantime. The film shall be radiated also in the USA.

I think I've heard about this but what discredits the article is this quote. Would Larry Schwartz speak in broken English? Is this is a paraphrasing? Absolutely no offense intended.

as usual, i used a translation program cause i didn't have the time to translate it myself from german. this usually adds a humourous aspect (which is not fitting too well in here, i admit it) but i was hoping it's enough to understand the meaning. honourable mr. schwartz said they "don't understand a german tv station can show this", that "all the facts described in the film are wrong" and that it's a "totally unfair" thing.

anyway, as i turn on tv now, i don't see the announced film.

edit - no real surprise as it's not wednesday yet.

Further reproached against U.S. army uncheckedly

Harald Neuber 17.12.2002

ARD sends the documentary movie of Jamie Doran Taliban captured on about a massacre for also U.S. armed forces, at which been involved be supposed to

A pre-writing of their documentary movie introduced "massacres in Mazar" Dokumentarfilmer Jamie Doran at the end of June, the medium echo was modest (the massacre which mustn't be) as the renowned British. These revealed fighters of the Taliban militias captured nearly in Brussels and Berlin press conferences organized parallel unbelievable end end shall prepared in the north of Afghanistan in the desert have been. The invoice as simply had as 8,000 men were cruelly been taken captive by troops of the north alliance after the capture of the city of Kundus. Only 3,015 people have arrived, however, at the final destination, the prison of Scheberghan. Thousand prisoners were "executed" in the desert Dascht Leili in opinion of Doran and after saying several witnesses. The U.S. "doctors for human rights" actually found remains of human bodies (massacre in the north of Afghanistan) in the expelled place.

It was said from U.S. circles according to the demonstration in the Bundestag the film is ordered "from PDS".

"Wrong ", so the prompt denial of Doran who explained " that my documentary movie 'the massacre of Mazar' has been neither ordered nor paid by PDS. I would be annoyed at the same time exceptionally if contrary rumors turn away of the central point of my film as regards content."

These fears were at least not, then realized further media took up the history after and after. When the U.S. news magazine Newsweek then took care of the matter in August, the U.S. government had to admit: Yes, U.S. soldiers were present with Dascht Leili and yes, there has been a massacre well. However, the U.S. soldiers present would have noticed nothing of this.

Despite these monstrous assertions some have happened since then. The doctors for human rights press for a securing of the presumed mass grave in the desert at Mazar-I Sharif since acquaintance development of the happening nit. In vain. "Our Forensik expert William Haglund has returned from the region" only few days ago, so John Heffernan of the Washington office of the "doctors" beginning of the week compared with Telepolis.

After the press reports to the USA and Great Britain the united nations would have consented to an examination. "Because our demand for such an investigation wasn't granted at once, we must service because of the extreme climatic conditions until spring" now, Heffernan laments. Till there the place is unprotected, however.

One of the main demands of the organization and the Dokumentarfilmers Doran is therefore the guarding of the presumed mass grave. But who shall take this one on if all finds active in the region charging order strengths for it must expect? André Brie, PDS representative in the European Parliament, made similar experiences. Already at the beginning of September he had wanted to organize a parliamentary group general delegation. "However, the Afghan government could give us no safety guarantees." The parliamentarians hope for an Afghanistan visit "for January or February" now.

Thomas Schreiber, the leader of the program segment culture on NDR television, rejected the reproaches of the U.S. government against the radiation of the film today

"All eyewitnesses who can be seen about the events in prison of Sheberghan and at the place of the mass grave in Dasht-I Leili in the documentation report correspondingly that American soldiers were present at these two places.

The spokesman of the U.S. State Department Larry Schwartz had explained according to dpa that the statements of the ARD documentation are 'completely wrong and disproved already'. This is in the clear contradiction to the notification of the Pentagon that no examination of the events by the U.S. forces has taken place till now. So an internal examination of the American Ministry of Defense as well as the exhumation of the mass graves would be necessary for the unequivocal clearing up, the post-mortem examination of the corpses and the identification of the dead bodies by the UNHCR."

When you argued in the united nations around the international punishing court of justice few weeks ago, the USA accounted for their abstinence with the "operating Sanktionierungsmechanismen in the U.S. army". And they completely don't seem actual too functioning self-samely according to the government at all.

Professed U.S. Ministers of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in Washington, when according to the case of Kundus the prisoners were disarmed it should " regrettable if they would be permitted now go to another country and commit there similar terrorist deeds ". He added :

"I hope that they either die or are taken captive." This seems now and then to work also the other way round.

On Wednesday, 12-18-2002, ARD shows the documentary movie.
