Did anyone in the Uk see a documentry last nite on channel 4 about weed? Suprisingly it was ok. At the moment in the UK there is a great amount of debate surrounding the drug. I believe next year (2003) here in the UK we will be even closer to it being decriminalised, which i'm up4 :!
However, last nites programme has made me think a bit more about the lovely weed. It focused on young people smokin exessive amounts over long periods of time. It compared the youth in the 60's to youth today, and the reasons we smoke it and our reactions. I find it amazing that today weed is upto 30 times stronger than back in the 60's. Also according to all the research they displayed, weed can bring on mental illness as much as what speed and crack can? The programme focused on teenagers caining pipes and bongs and having big smokin sessions, they talked to some parents who had no problem with their son smokin nuff weed untill he started becoming pyscotic and also it showed people who now are in mental insitutions who blame smoking to much for their downfall. I think there was a messege from last nites programme - DONT SMOKE LOADZ A WEED ALL THE TIME AS IT CAN SEND U MAD :D

The reason I don't smoke it anymore is because it makes me have panic attacks, it's the only drug that has done.
I thought I was the only person this happened to but now I have met a few people that it has this effect on.

well it doesnt seem to cause any problems to me, but ive heard of these mentioned panic attacks from some friends. i only smoke hash so i need to mix it up with tabocoo , but i dont smoke cigarettes.. so i am very alert to the taste and even the brand of the Fag ( god bless rothmans red )
i smoke quite often, as if a coffee drinker would drink coffee and i find it very usefull when it comes to creativity. my best work i kan ashamly say was done or concepted when stoned. i worry sometimes about long term use.. but then again.. it is one of the most natural of drugs u kan find.. so i sometimes doubt the actual dope giving you long term problems.

i handle it quite like you MUX. cigarettes no, weed yes! and true, it can help you finding creative solutions for problems to work on, nothing guaranteed though. i normally smoke it to watch a film or listen to music.
but you folks are right, it can lead to panic and paranoia so i usually don't smoke it when i'm in public, on parties where i know next to no-one ect. and surely not when i'm spinning records somewhere. i tend to not find a record fitting cos i simply can't get my thoughts away from the other one.
about weed and mental illness: i don't think that's true, all tests i've heard of didn't find a prove for that theory. they just said that it can lead to mental deseases if the person smoking it is already predisposed that way. so it's basicly working like a catalyzer.

I really smoked a lot some years ago, around 2 - 2,5 g a day, and it was good.
It became less from month to month, and now i do it with 5g around 2 weeks. Sometimes longer...
But now i feel more and more this hyperventilating, wringing feeling. Especially when i smoked weed.
I complete stopped smoking weed, and only do hash now.
But its getting fewer and fewer.
Interesting to hear about other people sharing this feeling
...it really pisses me on that i can´t smoke weed anymore!

I feel like weed should be used in the same way you would use a cup of herbal tea. Maybe to relax or boost creativity. It's an herb like any other(maybe a bit more potent) and should be used accordingly.
The whole smoking thing is what starts to bother me after a while.

Re: panic attacks
I have long wondered whether these are caused by the amount of chemical fertilisers which are being used in the hydro process ...
It has often come to my attention that some growers (in their haste) do not wash through their crop for a sufficient amount of time needed to rid the crop of the chemicals which make it so strong ...
Personally, i have been a fan of the green for a long time and have never suffered panic attacks myself...but have seen it in others...guess its a question of what your body can cope with...personally, i wouldn't mind trying THC by intravenous if this were humanly possible, would certainly make my life easier :D

yeah this is a personal issue at hand.i think its differnt to each person and i feel both sides.i once used to get those panic attacks,it felt like i was tripping on acid!very intense.pressure in the chest, hard time breathing.....etc......but as time passed and my life got less stressful i thought i would try it again.and it was fine!im a off and on user like cigerttees, but i understand both points of views.if its pleasurable and releaxing then do it,but if its to much hassel and its more stressful dont do it.
i have tried to analize why it effects people differnt and i have found that personal insecurities do cause a deffinet anxiety effect with the user.but if you are determined to smoke than force yourself to smoke all the time and the effects will leave.its tough rollin with the heavy weights when your a light weight.for the high will be so god damn intense all you'll want to do is go to the bed and watch a movie..............but to agree with jukka,i hate to go to public places when im high.just because its to much!

the other important 'negative' effect is that it makes u lazy. i know many talented, creative people who completely waste their life because of it, often inventing pathetic excuses about 'the rat race' and 'capitalism'...

@pille:
"just because its to much" !!!
that's the point...i don't like too much of trouble when i am stoned :!

There were times i was stoned everywhere and everytime, and other people doesn´t interest me.
Me and my friends smoked to every occasion, and it was a really fun.
But now its all getting to a lower level,...no hookers and not every day.
I also have a little wringing feeling on hash sometimes, but weed is horrible.
The strange thing is that i smoked one year ago only weed and had no probs with it..

when i was younger (20-24) i used to get high everyday, constantly. i felt like it was just 'enlightening' every situation. after awhile it began to make me paranoid and sometimes i would get tremors or feel extremely cold when outside it was warm. when i smoke these days, it makes me more aware of how fragile life is. i've also been dealing with some stomach problems that arose from taking antibiotics and when i smoke i feel pain in my gut like a spasm or cramp in a nerve.
i loved getting stoned so much and now i feel like crap and my mental stability just goes haywire. of course, the marijuana out here is so strong it can make you feel like you're about to have a panic attack.

I prefer weed because hash tends to be rather poor quality around here - ever felt a rather hard buzz immediately after smoking some hash, nauseaous thereafter, with the high wearing off rather quickly? congratulations, you've been sold henna-laced hash.
I've got some friends that grow their own hydro, so that's a safe bet, I like to buy a large stash from them that lasts me a while, for the above reasons. still, I'd anticipate chemicals in hash, not in weed - some weed kicks like a mule, but that's just because it's good quality. and yes, the quality of weed has definitely risen in the past 20-30 years, for obvious reasons - the less you have on you in terms of weight when caught, the lower your sentence is going to be... so better make it strong as f*ck lol
as for the paranoia thing - I have a friend who did have a psychotic episode some years ago, but he did all kinds of stuff, often mixed - I have yet to see conclusive scientific proof that this is directly caused by marijuana, coz I am not about to believe a television program in these matters, period. as for people now in mental institutions who blame marijuana - much easier to blame some drug than yourself, innit? even if the effects could be attributed to marijuana, it's thanks to that individuals weak personality that he is now sitting where he is. the aforementioned friend really lost it for a few months, but pulled himself together, and is now just a wiser user overall. know your limits.
funny somebody mentioned that feeling cold business - I had that once, many years ago - it was very strange, because it was at the beach on a warm summer morning - and no matter how much clothing I put on, I just felt really cold up to the point of my teeth chattering - I never experienced that again though.

i think it's more likely that life-circumstances cause panic attacks, and not the weed, although it cannot be denied that as one opens more to the world around u, this induced-sensitivity might present some problems which might be thought of as paranoid to some, but these uncomfortable feelings could also be a result of the deep-thought which can be experienced by taking a strong drug such as THC.
my sister is a psych. and she has seen many many people pushed over the edge by marijuana..and we've had many arguments about whether this would have happened to them without the drug, and/or if the drug 'caused' their psychosis. i think that any recurring neuroses one has whilst taking such a drug should be looked at carefully, incase they turn into a monster psychosis, needing hosp. treatment. incidently, the people who freak-out apparently return to their lives ok, once they have learned not to be psychologically dependent on the marijuana, but some do end up back there. maybe they would be alcoholics if they weren't on THC?

there are no safe drugs! most all drugs are toxic - i thought that was how they worked?
no-one can predict the effect it has on the taker. i guess these drugs can take people to heaven or hell. I thought that was why shamans had the exclusive right to take these drugs in human culture for millenia. not so in the 21st C.
i heard the resins are the worst for impurities...20% weed, mixed with henna and maybe even ketamine. definitely worthy of the name 'dope'.
i read, in a psychology book that in USA there is a community who smokes only resin and tobacco style spliffs, and their illness rates (cancer, mental illnesses) are much lower than any normal community, which rubbishes the idea that people get ill from the drugs.
I also read a few reports about rastafarianism, where daily use of THC is the norm. Some Psych's did experiments/tests on a group of heavy users as they went about their normal business, and found that instead of mental impairment in cognitive tasks, these men were many points above the norm. none had University educations. there reaction times were also above average.
I would dearly love to see the swiss model embraced, marijuana made legal to cultivate for own use, and legitimately taxed outlets for the dealers....purity to be guaranteed, and personal choice about whether it's tried or not. Socially, i see HASH as being in the same class as alcohol, made legal, and it's users brought out of the social-ostracisation which i feel is so damaging. Having to hide what u do from everyone isn't healthy, and would make me panic!
Surely we'ved proved by now that prohibition doesn't work. When the birth rate fell in greece, after the Trojan War, and most of the surviving men had become homosexual, the Govt. outlawed HETEROSEXUALITY..thus inspiring a rut of taboo breaking male/female sex....and bringing the birth rate up. I guess this TABOO effect is very apparent today in society, esp. with soft drugs like marijuana.
I'd also like to see one of our UK Parliamentary Ministers make a speech about marijuana being the favoured drug for middle-class professionals as a swiss minister did when marijuana was made legal in switzerland (or something like that)
