View Full Version : your favorite year of music?

it's been a while since a good wave of music has come around. it seems like it all goes in cycles. my friends and i have a theory that popular music only gets good about every 9 years. but i'd have to say that the last overall good year (imho) for music was 1997 (in the u.s.). It was just before Daft Punk fucked house up.. and house still had a deep soul. techno was still freakin' hard and very danceable.. not the typical modern "schranz" or beat tracks as of late. trance hadn't gotten too out of the psychadelic/goa realm, and even rock still had a good go. and i don't think that the term "idm" had even been coined yet. i think (for me) music was still innocent and soulful then. my how things have changed. what do you guys think?

'95 has to be my favourite year without a doubt.

i guess age also has something to do with it all. i'm only 21, so 95' wass just a tiny too early for me to really know what was going on. but looking back, that was a good. i'll compromise and say 95 through 97 was damn good.

1995!

I didn't read more then the first few sentences of this thread, but 1995 was the last year that really blew my mind. Vogel was at his prime, as was neil, those booth and brown boys, and idm was just becoming a catch phrase for decent music (and not the sense of overly repetitive mental masturbation that it is today).

Yeah, I was a sheltered black kid living in dayton ohio at the time, but from my perspective, the world was perfect (musically, anyhow).

Humm.. funny, I can't remember any specific album names, but the world was full of blue birds, hot tubs filled with Polynesian womyn. crates filled with cutting edge music, and max/msp wasn't done to death.

wow.. to dream of technicolored escapades, raves in back woods bungalows, small crustaceans named sam, and effervescent discords of logic and philosophy (syllogistic philosophy).

humm..i'm drunk..

what does idm mean

anarchosyn
12th December 2002, 10:05
"Idiomaticly Dynamic Masturbation"

Uhh.. wait.. maybe it’s

"Idolity doesn’t Modulate"

Humm.. that still doesn’t seem right…

Maybe ..

"Intelligent Dance Music"..

Nah.. to banal..

maybe… wait… maybe..

"Imminent Dysfunction’s of Malevolence"

yeah,, that sounds right (or without the sad stab at humor, #3).

1928!

stockhausen was born
:-)

lol

personally, i liked 1970...i remember swinging on the swings in the park, and singing to my self 'all right now' by free as a swing-song, and wondering at the marvel of my new sister, 'squidge', ...and then again, in 1972, it was re-released and another new sister was born, 'bear', and there i was on the swing, singing 'all right now' with my 2 yr old sister there on the swing, singing along...
"baby it's all right now..." and having a flashback to when squidge was born...songs are great for time-travel :)

i guess every year has it's ups and downs....

concidering pop-music, i think it's getting worse and worse...
artists trying to keep up with musical change by chossing the most popular producers (madonna, depeche mode) or just re-working old HITS with a couple of new refrains (RnB, boy/girl groups).
longlivety (spelling sux) is a word of the past, it's the fast-pace-life
that makes the buck, right? today top, tomorrow flop.......

okay, i didn't wanna piss anybody liking madonna or DM off, but it's just what i recently discussed with a mate.

79 and 80 were fantastic years for me, 81 was bad...gary numan retired from touring.
83 was good...gary numan unretired and even played in blackpool that year.
88 and 89 were great, also 95 was really good and 99 was cracking.
2002 has been the best and the worst for different reasons.

I disagree

- Depeche Mode always worked with hip producers: Daniel Miller, Flood, Francois Kervorkian. Madonna too.

- Pop is HOT now, in the US anyway: Neptunes, Dre, Timbaland are incredible production and melody-wise, there's some top stoopid-arsed punk - sum 47 etc - not to mention the Strokes and Stripes.

I vote 2002!

c'mon Knid, Dre was hot 5-7 years ago, now he's just trying to reinvent himself thru others -> truth hurts
personally i can't stand his phoney 5-tone preset sound melodies anymore...that was all okay in '95, but hey, it's 2002/2003

whatever.....

The irony in your statement is that he has constantly re-invented himself. However, I would have to contest that he was hot in 95 as he was the same as any other production line Gangsta rapper which was a pity really....

Here is how I see it, not quite Madonna stakes in reinvention but how credibility drops in search of the mighty dollar!!!

85 - The World Class Wrecking Cru provide us with 'Surgery' and other electro cuts. Quality!!
86 - Dre joins NWA!!
92 - Hooks up with Suge Knight on Death Row
93 - The Chronic signifies $$$$$$, and the rocky road to mainstream.
95 - Chart Fodder!

I don't even want to get into Eminem (sp?) and Lil Bow Wow, Jeee-eez!!

actually, while we're on the topic - I remember somebody asking on the old board once for that track and if it was available on vinyl, and the answer was so mysteriously phrased it sounded like there might've been some limited pressing...?

Actually, that was me that asked on the old board, I simply forgot that I had done so.

btw- all vinyl is limited pressing, especially dance floor oriented tech..
Damn shame to, there have been a lot of tracks released that I passed on due to cash which I really shouldn't have. Hell, I still need to even FIND dungeon master.

@anarcho

well, in theory every commodity is limited, but there's limited (as in finite copies) and then there's limited (as in get up early and wait for the record store clerk to open the door), as we all know. for example, a record that is "limited to 5000 copies" I just don't consider particularly limited, while one that is limited to 250 copies with handwritten catalogue number is fairly limited...

ischo
16th December 2002, 11:29
slightly off-topic,

but a frankfurt-based hiphop act called *nordmassiv* brought out an lp where they hand-painted every single cover individually.

now that's what i call limited special edition n shit.....

i say 1972 was coo.
even though i wasnt born yet
i grew listening to music of that era
like led zeppelin
pink floyd
grateful dead[only there live shit]
funk music was kicken ass then too all the way into
the 80s[like fatback,sly stone]
i never even knew of techno until me and like 5 of my
friends wnet to this wierd ass party that freaked me permantly

but these days i dont know whats up
with music in general. there is no such thing as real
rock&roll anymore to my knoledge. its almost like music itself
is starting to degenerate. freaky ass electronic funk
and hard machine techno and stuff like that is the only thing
that seems to float my boat at the moment.
or maybe i dont know anything.

for awhile there,
things seemed to
happen in
two year increments:

1987-read about
voivod in a science
fiction magazine.
bought all of their
records. saw the
swans upon their
recommendation in
yet another science
fiction magazine.
changed my life, it did...

1989-discovered grindcore.
also, einsturzende neubauten.
life changing type of things,
like i said just earlier and stuff.

1991-went to my first tkno
party. leo anibaldi played,
from what i'm told. in any case,
my life was changed.

1993-OMG JUNGALIST.
my life? on account of this
music, it changed.

1995-was living in oregon
most of that year. people
in oregon have badass
taste in music. must be
something in the water.
i digress...
my thoroughly indiefied
then-bf hipped me
to stuff like magnetic fields,
la monte young,albert
ayler,etc.
life changes lots.
that year, more so than
usual.

1997-there are some good
record stores in bangkok.
because of them, i learned
of subhead,vogel,and the rest
of you insane raving maniacs.
also heard speedy j's
public energy #1 that year.

while i've heard a lot of
life affirming music
since then, little i've
listened to has made me
want to change the way i
tie my shoes, let alone my
life.

and that's sad,
kind of.

Hip Hop isn't extinct. I think it's just the mainstream stuff that's going down. They'll still be stuff like Roots Manuva and Public Enemy (no matter what you say, their new release still contain some killer tracks) which will keep the torch burning.

I mentioned an artist called Braintax a few months ago (I heard him first on Mr Scruff's album Trouser Jazz) who is white and from Leeds in the UK. His stuff is totally fantastic. Intelligent, great groove, great beats. People will continue to come from nowhere and take hip hop into exciting new directions.
