In Switzerland the media are giving it major coverage at the moment, we are a bit anxious that Germany is going downhill and we can't sell our shit anymore.
The result certainly looked grotesque on Sunday evening, and one cannot believe that Merkel managed to lose so many votes in such a short time to an opponent who really hasn't got many achievements to show he should be doing his job much longer. But today things already start to look different, don't they? There will be a major reshuffling of positions, the Green party will fall in love with the ultraconservatives from Bavaria.

Politically the two major opponents are probably both scary - the fact that their main positions do not differ is the most scary aspect. Whether Merkel or Schröder become Chancellor doesn't really matter I believe, Germany's problems will have to be solved another way anyway, because both options will not improve anything.

1) makes me realise that the UK and US, each should have a coalition so that everybodies views are considered.
2) Not sure maggie-style "radical" reform is good for anybody except the rich
3) What has happened to fashion in germany?

i don't think this is going to happen. they just prepare the way for a big coalition. or we'll have new elections in let's say 2 months.
thes two options are really the only realistic ones, imho.

agreed. thats probably one of the main reasons why both did actually loose this time.

thanks for your thoughts phonudja! didn't knew it is that massive observed by the swiss press.

I think it's time for Bush and Blair to add Germany to the list of "failed nations" and send over a "peacekeeping" force.. enabling Bush to install a German president of his choice, thus creating a "democracy". There will probably be a few "extremists" and "insurgents" who'll object... but we can explode them all.

Nah...Guido also wanted to legalize, as he tried to get more votes from the younger generation a few years back with their "18!" campagne.....And of course Ströbele , "gib das Hanf frei! Und zwar sofort"!

I think the "liberals" FDP are a collecting tank for frustrated voters who don`t know what to vote.......Just tell Sina...She might be pleased with that statement....:)

- depends on what reforms you are talking about, many 'poor' people ended up becoming homeowners and shareholders because of thatcher.

oh .. i think there is a majority in germany a left one .. only the parties refuse to see that cos the spd is walking on neo-liberal paths economy wise. deregulating the market is not social, shortening of social systems is not social! there is no right in wrong .. is one of my favorit sentences (adorno)

I like Germany a lot. I spend time in Hiedelberg andand found it very pleasant. We went on a cabel car to the top of the mountain which was pretty good.
The Germans i met wanted to be Americans Then in 1989 It happened i received through the post a dark envelope
written in childish lettering Hitlers mums grandads Electricity bill painstakingly re-created in jaw dropping detail. It was a quilt for a teddy, not mine teddy but your teddy it was you who i speak of. In fact i am you your mother and her mother and heir mother and bert and ernie, and still reading? went down the shops this lunch time and got a tenner out, still reading? i spend that tenner on my lunch, still reading? for my lunch i hate a papple, its like a periwinkle, still readoong. a dragon came out of my sandwich and pecked me., i use it still today
as a hanky.
