i don't think you actually think in a language, but your mind interprets your thoughts into a language once you need to express them vocally. if you can actually understand everything that's on your mind while you're thinking, then you're either thinking very slowly or you don't have much on your mind. your mind (if i remember correctly) is capable of thinking about three things simultaneously. that's a lot of thought -> language converting to do on the spot. i think the language thing only comes into play once you need to relay any of that info into the outside world.

yeah sometimes its hard to find the words. but not that hard you are maybe imagine.

i remember this joke:
how do you call a person speaking 3 languages? trilingual
a person speaking 2 languages? dilingual
a person speaking 1 language? american

anyhow, my english isn't the best i think

i guess what i was trying to say is that because you understand the things that are going on in your head, you automatically assume that it's a language that you're understanding. in my opinion, i believe that the language aspect of the thought process comes only after you become aware of your thoughts and then understand your thoughts. and then you interpret what you understand into a language.

as for the one language thing.. you couldn't be more right on. i think it's such a horrible thing that us americans mainly only know and understand one language. i'm very envious of those of you who are multi-lingual. one of the things i'd like to do when i get back in school is to learn more languages so i can travel the world without being seen as the stereotypical american who can't speak a word of the native language. hooray for the usa. we're leading you all to death...

The Brits are just as bad, if not worse. An insular nation with a lazy population that generally doesn't tend to forget old feuds & has neither the inclination nor desire nor (in some cases) the social skills to learn a foreign language.

haha leading to death, right

don't expect to much from languagelearning at school piscaries. i think most of us can speak english because: the most of us had it 5 to 7 years at school, mostly all vocals in songs are english, in our daily speaking are english words more and more. so, you know, english is all around here.
i learned also french at school, imagine how much i can say nowadays on french? hardly what my name is. i finished french with the note 2 (means B in usa i think)
and last not least how old are you? hard to learn a language then youre becoming older

i'm only 21, but i've been absorbing all sorts of crazy information and i really do have a drive to learn anything that i can. i'm in a really wierd state of mind right now and i think it would be very possible to learn new languages. i'd like to learn japanese. it seems very beautiful/articulate. and i'd like to finish learning the spanish that i started in high school (i remember almost all of it even though i rarely use it). i still couldn't hold a good conversation in spanish.. but i've got a start at least.

I dunno, I don't think I agree with piscaries theory on thinking in languages - I think I know where you're coming from, but sometimes I definitely think as if I'm speaking, and that can be in either German, English or Finnish. This may have something to do with fact that certain words in certain languages just "fit" better, and for instance also what language my last conversation was in, etc.

i do think that sometimes you actually do think in a language, but only after you become aware of your thoughts. your mind is always going, but are you always aware of it?

ok, in that case I misunderstood your post - nicely put, I think "simulating" something of a conversation is just one type of thought process...

Given that i study linguistics, it is often postulated by some of the major theorists that language is (in essence) the means by which we conceive, structure and ultimately understand reality.

I am not sure whether i totally agree with this position as I am sure ultimately, it is far more complex but to ask the question, is there understanding without language ? is certainly an interesting one !

hehe!

I used to hear a majority of mandarin and cantonese around me, and wasn't accustomed to hearing english with an englisch accent until i moved to england.

ich habe dieses Problem auch! Ich denkte eins in englisch, bis ich erlernte Deutsch, und nun ich denke in beide, aber meistlich auf englisch. Manchmal, ich kann nicht der recht Wort finden, in beiden Spräche!

Although, I think my englisch spelling suffers since I started to learn German, 18 months ago.

I blame the internet too :)lol

see i find this very interesting, the element of involentary change.it seems all of us has had some instance in our lives where we were exposed to some other language or currently learning another language.this is one of the reasons i come to this board is to broaden my horizons and see from differnt perspectives.this board has deffinetly cleared up some things for me in the areas of curiousity i had for europe and the world for that matter.i still think we should have some kind of convention or something so everone could meet in person...that would be great? right?[p]

what about the idea of no-future t-shirts?
I remeber all of us talking about that back on the blue
board. I still remeber my idea. we could have shirts with a erutufon logo on the front and then our sign on name on the back with a number underneath it like a sport jersey. we could be team erutufon.

I take the 13...

About the thinking stuff, it's for me pretty strange, as I grown up in a french speaking place, with a nord-irish mother, so I heard (but didn't speak) english since I'm born plus 5 years in the school, so I have some good base, till 3 years ago, I usually thought in french and sometimes in english. But I then decided (I'm sure I was drunk) to learn German and I'm now since 3 years in a german speaking city and now I'm thinking french and sometimes german. But the craziest think is that I dream in german...
