Paying for ID cards=pointless- it'll be the cause of the next poll tax revolt

ID cards as a 'magic' way to stop crime/terrorism etc= also pointless- I expect (speculation here) that the London suicide bombers had valid UK passports, and had ID cards been compulsory, they probably would have had clean ID cards too.

BUT

a lot of EU countries have had ID cards for years and nobody minds too much, probably because these other EU coutries don't have Tony as their, er, 'President' (sic)...
