Anyone else watch this last week?

I saw the trailer, and my first thought was "for people who've been involved in what looks like quite a distructive plane crash, they have fantastic hair"

However, I then read about it in my TV magazine, and got quite excited, as it seemed to have a bit of a Lord of the Flies vibe, so I ended up watching it.

Only took me an episode and a bit, and I'm hooked. It's trash tv, but interesting trash tv, with a hint of the Twin Peaks or X-Files' less conspiratorial bits about it. The characters all seem good, giving you enough back story to keep you interested in them, but not too much so you get bored. I also like the fact that it's got about 20 main characters, allows for lots of interaction and personal politics to get involved, and should give us plenty to get excited about. The mystery of not only what is going on the island, but also why they crashed had me wondering all kinds of things. Apparently they have at least 4 series worth of story, so it's not going to be tied up anytime soon. Let's hope that they can keep the pace of suspense without losing their way.

It also has at least one laugh-out-loud moment, when this kid is talking to a middle eastern looking guy, who is fixing their radio.

"Where did you learn to do that?"
"I was in Military Communications."
"Really? You see combat?"
"I served in the Gulf War."
"Yeah? My friend was in there. The 103rd Airbourne. What were you in, Airforce? Navy?"
"Republican Guard."
"..."

Of course, the only problem now is having to stay in for the next 24 Thursdays.

I thought it was gash... another designed by comittee TV show populated by beautiful americans.

It reminds me of that Eddie Izzard sketch where he takes the piss out of 'Tales of the Unexpected' and how it's actually remarkably easy to write a tale of the unexpected.. "So these people crash land on this desert island.. and they're wandering through the jungle when suddenly A POLAR BEAR RUNS STRAIGHT FOR THEM".

I've seen the first series already. It is addictive, some of its quite naff though. like all the flashbacks. each episode has several flashbacks, which gets a bit tiring after a dozen episodes. I'm also worried about how they are going to tie up all the red herrings and unexplained weirdness that goes on effectively.

oh well its worth it just for Evangeline Lilly(Kate). *drool*

you're right to compare it to twin peaks though, it uses almost the same plot devices to keep you watching. except in twin peaks they had shoals of red herrings and misdirection every episode and nothing ever came of it. In a different league completely. Lost by david lynch would be something.

I am hooked !

You can see a trailer for season 2 if you put in Hurleys numbers in the travellers and then in the rows of the plane...

It's tickled my fancy, but fuck knows where it's going - have to say, committee or no committee they (the US) are making far better tv drama than us Brits - I mean come on if anyone can be accused of being formulaic it's gotta be us - how many forensic detective series do we need - anyone see that Donovan - what was teh point of that - oh look crap CSI with Tom Conti with a little drama surrounding the fact that he's a cop and his missus is leaving him - oh, blow me down - how fucking original!

One thing I will say, I really hate how the American drag things out - why they can't do the odd 12 part one off series I don't know - I mean I'm a bit disturbed to find out that there's Lost season two - surely the whole thing should be resolved by the first season, what happens in the second - are they still all on teh island (yawn) or do some of the character from teh first find themselves in another plane wreck on another purgatory-esque island (unfeasible).

they drag it out for the money. second season always feels like an afterthought, the idea begins to get tired, same thing with the new season of battlestar, feels like its lost the plot. but the first series was awesome.

On the David Lynch tip, he's reading a daily weather report of the metro LA area on his web site nowadays, heavily recommended.

I can think of a couple of really good British TV dramas in recent years. If you haven't seen it, I seriously recommend anyone watch State of Play. It was on the beeb a few years ago, with a stellar cast (John Simm, Kelly MacDonald, Bill Nighy). All about the death of a black kid in London, and the apparent suicide of an MP's research assistant. Six episodes of on your seat entertainment, it's something you genuinely cannot wait for the next episode to see, because you really want to know what happens next. Plus it has more twists than something pretty damn twisted.

unrelated. but has anybody seen 'the girl in the cafe' another beeb sponsored film about the g8 summit. awesome. and they made a film about the truth and reconciliation hearings in SA, called 'red dust' which was much better than the US version, it had Hilary Swank in though, but I'm not complaining. oh baby.

the beeb rule, compounded by the fact they just let me watch the mighty boosh without a tv.

and al jazeera was apparently started by disillusioned beeb journalists.

lost is great - if you don't analyse it too much it's good tv - very addictive. i'm suffering waiting until september for season 2 so i might get stuck into deadwood - anyone seen this? any use? ian mcshane?

not a neighbours watcher myself, but I'm talking prime time dramas.
blue heelers (cop drama in a small country town), mcleods daugters (girls on a farm in a small country town), all saints (hospital in a small country town) and so on....terrible acting HORRIBLE stories. That shit floods prime time here. I now watch a total of 4 hours of telly a week (6 if my footy team is playing) it's that bad..

Jamoid

it lacks any real depth, imagination or originality, but it always leaves me wanting to see the next episode anyway.

it preys on human curiosity. what does the monster look like ? what does that message mean ? who is the man in the suit ? ... etc etc.

annoying.

I think its wednesday's mate, and that problem can be solved...download the whole first season from torrentspy.com. 8.86 Gb but at least you can watch it at your leisure and piss people off by saying "wait till you see episode 14!! You'll never guess what happens!"

I hate being held to ransom by TV schedules.

I'm the other way round, downloading an entire season off the internet and watching it all - it's like the telly equivalent of crack - I like to pace myself... :)

Like a heavy read that is good, but long - you keep chipping away at it...
