Whilst their acclaimed debut, Head On (Loaded), featuring the classic single "Darn Cold Way O' Lovin", was all funked up, Raw Digits is pure midnight soul. Lidell took vocal inspiration from bedroom smoothies like Marvin Gaye and Prince, his voice gliding, swooning, hoopin' and hollerin' like a man possessed by the night. The first single, 'messagesacomin', opens the album in the style it means to go on, cleaving Lidell's fluid falsetto to deep, unsettled Super_Collider rhythms. It's sexy, in an unexpected way; like an xray of desire, a tap into the restless flux of the unconscious. We think you'll find the strangely compelling squishy grooves do something to your loins, as well as twisting your melon.
Lidell is now Berlin-based and Vogel in Barcelona, so the recording of Raw Digits took place across Brighton, Berlin and Barcelona over two years. The duo would meet up for sessions with a bag of song ideas and open minds - including an intense spell in a dusty analogue studio in an old DDR radio station in East Berlin - their scheme to try and preserve the often improvised electricty of their live performances amongst the exacting nature of their production techniques: dynamic charisma underpinned by studio precision.
The moods on Raw Digits range from the unexpectedly tender ballad 'gravity rearrangin' (which features Herbert playing keyboard bass) to the gothic R'n' B masterpiece that is 'collide n conquer'. With a full spectrum of emotions, cloaked in mystery and subterrranean swing, Raw Digits is one of the year's most memorable releases.
Having now departed their previous label home at Loaded, the Brighton-based No Future-run label Rise Robots Rise has been set up to release Raw Digits. Since the release of their debut in 1999, Super_Collider have remixed Bush, played live at international festivals including Transmusicales, Berlin Love Parade, Roskilde, Sonar (1999 & 2000), Pukklepop, Indiann Summer (Australia), Lissard Festival (Ireland), Lethargy (Switzerland), Mannheim Jazz Festival, Digital Convenience (Tokyo) and Big Beat Boutique. They even set up thir own club night 'Freekin the Frame' at the Beach in Brighton and The End in London. Super_Collider won the prestigious accolade of Best Producers for Head On at the inaugural German Dance Awards in 2000, and were awarded the prize for Best Album for Raw Digits at the Musik And Maschine Awards, Berlin 2002.
As individual producers, the duo have established sizeable reputations. Cristian Vogel released his 8th solo album Sing Sweet Software under the pseudonym Trurl and Klapaucius in 2001, on Tresor's art label Supremat, with Rescate 137 on Novamute in 2000. Previous albums have been releasedon Mille Plateaux and Tresor. He produced French act Scratch Massive's debut album in 2001, is working on production with Chicks on Speed in Summer 2002, and releases a double EP on Tresor "Dungeon Master" in September 2002. A mix album is planned on Novamute for 2003.
Jamie Lidell, having enjoyed success as an acclaimed techno producer on Subhead, Sativae, Mosquito and Tresor, released his debut album Muddlin' Gear on Warp / Spymania in 2000, as well as playing many exciting solo live shows, and doing remixes for artists such as Herbert. He tours the US on the Warp Magic Bus tour July / August 2002.
