View Full Version : what sound is going down in your town?

Right now, one of my primary interests in dance music is trying to understand the movements that are growing and dying in different cities. What styles of music have come together to define a sound and stuff like that. This is an ever-changing phenomenon. It often gets bogged down but creative energy pushes it forward and forward.

So what sounds define your town or the town in which you choose to get down? Or, more specifically, what sounds define the scene(s) you pay the most attention to.

Chicago has a huge dance music scene with, of course, House as it's staple. The techno scene right now is divided into two areas promoters seem to stress: Hard techno on the one hand and the more dubbed out variety on the other. The hard stuff is unfortunately of the boring samey sort in most instances. One exception was a Rob Hood live pa/dj set last Friday, but this sort of event is rare. The dubbed out shit is, in my opinion, a much more progressive form of techno dance music as it includes the hard stuff as well more nuanced shit. Anywhere from Klang to Kompakt to Brighton techno and back here to Detroit, Chicago, Philly, NY and the rest.

There's not as much interest as some of us would like at this point but there are some new nights with interesting contributing musicians and we're hoping it grows.

Thanks for any input.

where I am at right now it is all crap. these people here wouldn't know good music if it shat on their heads and called them sally. all I hear down in florida is crappy breaks, shitty 'electro' (if you can call it that) and the most god awful trance and hard house. I went to one of the record stores here a while ago and they had three copies of michael forshaws chan-n-mikes #4. and I am sure they will be there forever because people just don't know..

neotrance, funkydiscohouse and the usual billboard stuff. great, isn´t it? it´s just me mates and i and maybe 20 other people into good music...and i only know 2 other guys who are really into the no-future sound. correct me if i am wrong jukka?!

@mercedez ben
i didn't realize you were from chicago too. i noticed techno seemed kind of "gone" for a while in chicago, but it does seem to be having a resurgance. however i haven't ever really been too much a part of the scene so i don't know if my observation is accurate. i'm more focused onto the experimental/idm stuff going on in the city. my conclusion: too many laptops. we have a small collective here that is trying to be mainly synth-based. i'm the most digital of all of them cause i use a laptop (just to sequence!) and a nord modular as my main sound source. they're trying to keep the analog vibe going and doing live shows with lots of keyboards. so i think those are the main two scenes going on in chicago right now: techno and (i hate using this term) idm.

and just wandering a little OT: what part of the city are you from? i'm up in logan square.

piscaries,
very cool to talk to another chicagoan here. i'm in rogers park near pratt and clark. it sounds nice what you and your crew are up to. do you have any regular shows? do you have anything coming up? yes, the techno scene was virtually non-existant for a while. i'm hoping it continues to grow. i think the key is getting people excited about it, just pumping out the energy and good sounds to make that happen. a few of my friends and i have a new bi-weekly at smartbar on thursdays. maybe we could help eachother with event support and what-not. there certainly isn't a whole lot of competition.

best :)

we don't have too much going on. we're all starting to finalize our studios and do our own things. we've been a collective for about 7 years now (we all went to high school together) and we all just kind of pooled all of our gear for a while. it sounds like you guys are much further along than we are. most of us spin though, and one of my friends and i spin techno. maybe we could get you a tape/cd or something. i've done some stuff with a multimedia group called fluxcore, but i am by no means really tight with them. i print some of their flyers though. my friends also just played at the congress theater for lumpens "hallowave". they go by the name of "ghost arcade" but they disbanded after that show. that show was done by lumpen and fluxcore. we're slowly but surely getting a foot-hold in chicago. i'd say this next year will be a good growth period for us. what do you go by @ smartbar?

I Live in LA, so all sorts of shit can be found, for some reason always the generic crappy stuff.

Bad Trance, BAd House (flacid), DARK ugly overdone D&B, Electro might show its head in someones set but usually by accident.

The good part is plenty of good DJ's come through, so that saves it.

I think its just because the general Public is not into the music as much as the freaks on this board are

down here in frankfurt there's lots 'o crappy "in-style" lounges and "dress to impress" venues. with all of them BMW pimps and their super-stylin' gucci-handbag chicks.

but then again, there's my beloved robert-johnson. (guess i'm a glitch-house-bitcher). and there's plenty of smaller clubs like vinylbar, kiosk...that just don't care about mainstream techno-stuff like the u60311 and do their very own, refreshing thing.

lots of nu-asian down here aswell.....

the sound in our town is known as the "dodgy cover band sound" which involves bands getting up and singing the same crap songs by blink 182 and live, with crap names like "hard copy" and "fridge magnet" the latter give out fridge magnets....so I can throw them at them

robert johnson does seem to have phat lineups...

in my town the most popular style of dance music seems to be shit, closely followed by more shit.

All very interesting and thank you, but i'm interested in what YOU'RE interested in. Not what sucks in your town unless that's all there is. I mean, even if your scene is two people deep, that's what I'm interested in. And ok, if there is no scene, then what's developing in your HEAD. And thanks again if you care to share.

here in frankfurt we also have the goldfinger which is often hosted by mille plateaux/force inc. acts.
it was a small tabledanceclub. last month there played suthek live, asmus tietchens and other live acts in that direction.
i think the "idm" scene is growing here.
i miss nu skool breaks in frankfurt and wonky techno but maybe we can work on that :)

It´s located in the Münchnerstrasse 9, thats the reason the club is sometimes called "Spielplatz M9"! It´s also a subdivision of the Golden Gate.

Deccard isn´t a Frankfurterlol , he´s from a "Nachbarghetto".

here in bristol a lot of people are into drum and bass, hiphop. no techno except for the acid tekno variety which tends to get a bit boring - just 909 and303 (in a bad way)

there used to be future funk which had techno both schranz and wonky - but its finished now.

theres good experimental music at the cube cinema

anyway - i got my auth for MaxMsp today, so i'mjust going to stay in and make tunes instead of going out.:illin:

Well, given that I am from Wales.....Mostly Male Voice Choirs, Rugby Songs with the Odd Manic Street Preacher's Chorus down the pub on a Saturday night after a few pints of Brain's S.A. Bitter ;)

Silly comment aside, I guess our collective play acros the board:

House/Techno/Breaks/Drum & Bass/Hip-Hop

In fact, Drum & Bass is massive in my city (Cardiff), with several regular nights which run both Weekly and monthly...not to mention the new UK Star "High Contrast" being a local boyo !

Personally, I am more of the techno-house persuasion.

mercedez - luckily you haven't heard "Bajs i bastun"

8-()

I think you forgot Fylkingen/The Nursery Tomas..

The Nursery is a somewhat pretensious club in Stockholm for electronica/clip hop.

Here in Luleå however, there is no such thing as a scene when it comes to electronic forms of music.
What is going in my mind right now is that Edinbourgh style is making a big comeback after many years 8-() .
Also, I have fallen for a synth/electro hybrid which is more melodious and focused on the build-up/arrangement rather than the actual beat - good examples on what I mean would be Anthony Rother - Little Computer People and GD Luxxe - 21st Door EP.
So what's going out? I used to like house and vocal house (Kerri Chandler-like stuff) a lot. Those records don't get played a lot these days, and neither does the The Advent and Adam Beyer-style loop techno.

Hmm this turned out as an essay didn't it.. :D
peace

In Hannover the loopy "Schranz" sound will going to be big in the near future...Liebing, Remus, Rush...etc, and the people go mad!

i gotta say that here in tokyo, the nofuture sound was huge earlier this year and last year, but Detroit techno is now what drives people mad in the clubs. the biggest nights are when Claude/uncle Jeff/UR play in the city.

as far as the whole schranz thing is concerned, i will be glad to never hear that word again. it is preposterous to lump artists like Surgeon and Leibing in the same lame genre'. would james ruskin be schranz? How about, regis, christian wunsch, oscar mulero or me? The whole schranz thing is dumb. I do understand that there is mindless brain mashing loop techno out there, but alot of great dj tools are on the market as well.

Quality will speak for itself and techno is changing...

detroit was where it started, but techno back then was a word for house made with cheaper gear! juan and the boys were working with what they had and derrick and kevin were just trying to make house like the boys in chicago were doing. it is just like motown, they were trying to do r&b with the resources they had at hand.

nothing is changed by one person alone. sounds change as situations do.
