anyone else have a little place in their hearts for mixtapes? mix cd's are fine, but there's just something about the warble and hiss of a good old analog mixtape that just makes the music all that better. it seems like dj's are a little looser on tapes as apposed to cd's. maybe they don't worry so much about being perfect because they aren't worried about putting something out on cd? whatever. i'll take a tape over cd any day.

tapes are the best.i will never stop recording tapes.the tape novelty factor is so great.so little compact cool decorable things.ive accually recently been doing some tape looping and fucking around with tape recording and crude sampling of the accual tape deck itself.it sounds crude but very effective for my static experiments.ive accually went to the local old gear shop and found a portable recordable 8 track that has never been opened and blank 8 tracks to go along with it.i thought it would be great to record my songs on to a 8 track and make some cool design for the cover and send a copy of my recording and a 8 track player to a record label just to see there response.i dont know he only wants 20 bucks for the recorder and three blank tapes unopened.sounds good.

I have a circa skateboard shoebox filled to the top with mixtapes. all kinds:
neil landstrumm, mike dearborn, damon, wild, bob brown, dj hyperactive, adam x, frankie bones, lauren garnier, dj sluggo, dj urban, db, scott henry, the dever, delta nine, miss kitten, danny the wild child, feelgood, heather heart, doc martin, diesel boy, dara, dj dan, tony rohr, audio 3, mark verbos, chris puley, joey beltram, kenny glasgow, jesper dhalback, umek, markus stork, dubtribe, mike parker, gonzo, x-dream, oliver ho, claude young(!), mr kleen, dj oso-fresh, carl cox, dj rush. all kinds. I rarely listen to them though because I am afraid of destroying them. I have been planning once I get my pro tools rig, that I am going to record them all into my computer so I can master and burn them to cd. it is one of my main goals at some point. make them all sound REAL good. and burn them to cd. so one day if I have kids, I can give the cds to my kids and be like: 'this is what your daddy was listening to when he was a kid'. kinda of like the hippies who have all those old bootlegs of all that dope classic rock! I know it sounds REAL CORNY, I KNOW! but I would love to honestly do that.

jup, I have around 40 tapes hidden in a closet recorded from 94-98. All containing electronic-music-radioshows from the danish national radio. The best inspiration ever... Back then it was a very important way for me to get feeling about the scene... very funny to listen to once in a while, but I must say I mostly stick to records/cds/streaming media today. My tape-recorder is even hidden somewhere in my bedroom - not connected at all...

i can do the first mix and send it on to (exemple)ruben.
and then ruben do a mix and send it on to the next one
and so on until the tape is full?

the record that is beeing "in" mixed should both me and
ruben have soo he can edit out the silence.

what do you guys think ?

it´s just a thought hihi..

Hmmm, not being one of dose DJ/Producer types I thrive on mixes, admittedly most of mine are on CD, and the tapes I've moved over to CD too, cos most people have CD player these days, but tapes have a nice warm sound - I'd much rather record a set at clubnight onto tape than MD, MD sucks big time.

I dunno what it does, but a lot of recordings sound really muffled and wooly tape is way better...

minidiscs use atrac lossy data compression. basically the same data compression for mp3s. with this compression scheme as audio comes into the minidisc they pass through a frequency analyzer. if it detects two sounds that occupy the same frequency area it drops the quiter sound out. since in theory you wouldn't be able to hear the lower sound in that frequency due to frequency masking. that way you are able to fit 80 minutes of music on those small discs. and if you up the compression you can fit like 4 hours on one disc.

I am confused about the mix thing. are we supposed to dj over the last track? which wouldn't be fesible unless everyone had a multitrack machine.

why don't we just make mixes straight-up for each other? a little no-future insider trading? i'd also love to get my hands on some other mixes from you guys. i don't have many that have survived borrowings and car vandalism, i've only got about 10 left. i'd love to do trades though. off the top of my head i've got: laurent garnier, robert hood, gene ferris, surgeon, glenn underground, damon wild, heather heart, adam x, james ruskin, joel mull, and i've got a recording of a minimal live pa by stewart walker on some canadian techno radio show (if forgot the name). if anyone wants to trade, i'd be very down for that. got a few other exclusive recordings from some parties here in chicago. my friends were working sound and bootlegged some mixes. i'll see what those are. anyone got an umek tape??

yeah we tried a little mix tape swap once before but it never really went anywhere. I would love to do a swap. (I want that rob hood and surgeon tapes!) I am in no real position right now to start making copies and mailing them off, but in a month or so I would be totally down. everyone who wants to participate should list who they have. mine is above. lets do it for real this time.

I am actually looking for any old jeff mills mixes from like the early or mid ninetys. when he used to spin a lot faster. anyone have such material.

somewhere amongst my friends i remember hearing a mills tape. "break-it break-it down and put your head to the curb." good ghetto and fast techno.. well above 150bpm. now you got me wanting to track that down for myself!

@sheridan
trade surgeon & rob hood for umek & oliver ho?

Sheridan
15th November 2002, 20:33
yeah I also want those james ruskin and joel mull ones. forgot those were there. the oliver ho one is actually part of a set he did on groove tech a back in 99. it might still be there. the umek one is actually a copy of his mix on monoid back in 99. so in a word it isn't a true mix tape. just me stealing from the artist. but if you still want them I am down.

THe Mix Tape thing sounds good to me, It would be a cheap way for all of us to get some new music. Personally money is tight right now, so I've been trying to avoid the record shop.

The only problem is we all live way far from each other, but there must be some cheap ass way to do it.

Most of the mix stuff I have is my own mixes, so i can listen to my new records in the car. But we can just send each other our own mixes too. I would be interested in hearing what you guys like.

As far as Mills, i collect his records so I have a bunch of his stuff, Mostly Axis stuff minimal dark and heavy.

sending tapes is pretty cheap. i can't see it being more than $1.50 if you just go to the post office to do it. fed ex and ups will rip your nuts off, they're not worth it till you start sending big packages. most expensive part will be gettin good tapes to dub to. i say we just start trading our own mixes and mixtapes that we already have. but i have to warn you guys, i haven't bought records in about 2 years. i like to think my stuff is good, but it may be stuff you've already heard before (although i usually pride myself in scouring the cut-out bins for the quirkiest techno).

im very down.yeah the only thing is placement @left.but for all of us that are speaking we all live in the us.sheridan@orlando/piscaries @chi-town/lefthandlou@l.a./me@greenville,sc.i really havent heard any new techno except gunjacks beautiful pieces, and all the cv stuff i get.most of my collection is stuff that is more broken, and downtempo, but years ago i collected a lot of really good detroit tech, and deep deep deep house.like @lefthand,i too mostly have mixes for my own collection,so that i could listen to them in the car.ive got a couple ready to go and lots of tape packaging from the record store so,whoever wants one raise your hand.

In another forum I hang out in, they set up a x-mas trade system, everybody that wants to take part submits some mixed muzak, and one central figure is in charge of redistributing those cd's to all that took part in a fair and random manner...

worked last year and they're just preparing for this years.

'course almost everyone on that board is located in the same country.

im so thankful that someone started this thread because i had been thinking of it the other day. i'd be down to correspond with anyone in trading mix tapes. a no-future tape pool would be great too. i am as low tech in this game due to my meager income (at this point, no income) and could never get around to burning a mix onto cd. i know that many of you out there do most or all of your record playing at home and i think this would be the best (possibly only) was to share your love of no-future type techno with the rest of the world.
i also have several stacks of tapes from friends who have done mixes over the years and although some of the mixing is downright rough and sloppy, the spontaneous energy is there and makes for a statement that cant be duplicated were it a "planned out" mix for mass consumption.

i look forward to hearing from you all.

Thread of coinsidence, I say.... a friend of mine in the States contacted me last night, to tell me that he'd made some mixtapes for me, and that they would be posted over next week... Made me smile. There is something really nice about a person doing that for you - like time and effort is being put into it.....

There is something about making a mixtape - I have an abundance of them that I make for myself and my Walkman, and I also love making them for people who Iknow will like 'em.

Since my big bro got me a CD Burner, I have used it once or twice to burn a disk of the odd gems I manage to download..... only to record off the CD to make my mixtapes!

Everything that the world of music has to offer today always comes down to the two basics -
Vinyl & Cassette

Long live the hiss and the crackle of the vinyl!

pille'ocheoni:
oki i´ll make a mix and let the second rec play until the end and you can find a way to put your next record in...
do you have tobias schmidt´s - finger prints ep, msq rec ?
cause it would be easier for you to make the mix if you have the same record =)

cheers tomas !
