was watching the announcment live whilst having me lunch and though i have been completely cynical about the whole thing let out a wee squeak of excitement when it was announced.
i certainly won't be living in london in 2012 god help me, but i can only hope it provides some sort of impetus to improve public transport for keeps (i.e. after the games has ended).
whilst the idea of east end regeneration sounds good, i don't think sports centres are really the vehicle to do that, does hackney really need an olympic rowing lake? how grim will these places be 5-10 years after the event?

This is what I'm interested in, see. Is the money that they're spending on sorting out the trains going to be recouped from hosting the Olympics or is it just money they've suddenly found in order to get the bid through, despite the trains having been fucked for years?

Dunno, but they managed to find the money to kit out loads of tube train seats in new 'Back The Bid' fuzz when I was down in London during January, which seemed like an excellent way to channel much-needed improvement funds.

Well in terms of the regeneration of a city that was in the doldrums, placing it on the worldwide map as a tourist destination after years of government by a dictator - maybe you are right. But then Barcelona's circumstances were unique and could only be rivalled now by the Olympics going to an Eastern European country.
But the Sydney olympics were REALLY successful for the city and Australia.
People behind that successful olympics have been advising the London bid, so I think it could be ok.
I listened to a programme about it all on Radio 4 a few weeks ago. The Greeks made some terrible planning decisions and left it all to the last minute, thus spending much more than they needed to, and lots of the stuff they built is now totally derelict and unused. It doesnt have to be that way.
PLUS as with all Olympics, different events will be taking place in different parts of the country, they wont only be in London. The sailing will be at Southhampton, for example. I'm sure there will be events in the North although maybe not as far as Scotland. But if Edinburgh or Glasgow or Cardiff were to get the Olympics, I wouldn't be carping about it, I'd be happy for those cities.
Personally I'm relatively pleased that the UK has got it - handled well the wealth cumulative causation can be really excellent for years to come before and after the event.
that was a balanced, intelligent and thoughtful post.

The absence of an IDENT mindset

Yeah its good in that respect. But you have to live in Hackney.
lol! Better that than the chav mecca of Chelmsford ;)
Hackney is one of the most disgusting places on earth and thats probably not an exagerattion. Chelmsford has the Fresh air, the pastures, the hills. And in 30 minutes I can be ON DMT on my back in JD Wetherspoons slap bang opposite St Pauls.

phil - chelmsford does not have hills!
You have to 'feel' the vibe in Hackney Phil, embrace it and enjoy it. London Fields on a sunny day is a great place to be..its like a crusty festival with no music.
All my friends live here so its a good place for me to be. I've done suburbia/outer London blandness..i just want harsh living from now on.
Hackney was wicked 10 years ago. Then it got gentrified by a load of students and has lost its vibe completely. Now it feels like im on an internet forum when i walk about there.
Isn't/Wasn't everyone a student once though? Internet forum? Unplug mate, lots of lovely hippy girls running around looking for 6ft 6" of essex hype. I'll hook you up.

Much further east as in 'less than two miles'?

Hackney rocks, of the all the places I lived it was the best. I think it's a long way from being gentrified - sure there's a spill over from Shoreditch - I mean Tec's moved in for fuck's sakes... But it still has the vibe I reckon - I love it, and as for students and the likes most people in London think the place is just crime central. I used to get loads of shit off my workmates for living in 'the ghetto' yet, three of them get mugged walking up Kentish Town road - so whose neighbourhood is the shitest? Kentish Town is fucking bumhole of London that's for sure...
