this has always confused me.

in the UK we get a hell of a lot of rain.

and we are an island.

so in theory, we shouldn't be short of water when it comes to summer, which normally is only really hot for maybe 1 month.

de-salination plants, better means of capturing the water that falls out of the sky, job done.

the uk is going down the pan!

We should have a sweepstake on how long it is before they wheel out the "wrong kind of rain" excuse.

Well it *is* the wrong kind of rain from what I can gather.

actually, there is a massive reservoir near me, and it's only about half full right now.

basically, we've had a lot of rain, but it's come too late.

de-salination plants???? we are an island.

why are there not more of those?

oh yea, the water is privatised, and is a business so profit is involved so that means nothing will ever work.

you have answered your question

de-salination plants cost more to run than water companies can make back by selling the water to us

yes loz - but water to the people of a country shouldn't be about making a profit should it. thats the problem

Loz

I'd rather a lot of things in this country weren't about profit - water, communications, public transport, electricity, etc, etc

agreed.

Yeah, maybe so, but it can't always be the wrong kind of rain, surely ?
I just think if they fixed up their leaky pipes and spent a few pennies on their infrastructure instead of the shareholders, then maybe more of the water would get to the reservoirs.

Yes in glasgow its pissing down as usual today. They should install a big guttering system in scotland to catch all our rain and send it down south.

Hehehe... and some people depend on petunias for survival.

I'm alright.. I have a hanging basket full of tomatoes and I use my watering-can to water them. Don't tell Severn Trent water...

It's money isn't it. Isn't the scandal that the government privatised all the water companies and they were supposed to modernise the network, build bigger and better capacity and fix the leaks. I read somewhere that 25% of our water is lost to bad, leaking water mains.

Of course all the privatised water companies did was give all the money to shareholders and now they're asking for astronomic rises in water rates (the old water meters are rearing their ugly heads again) so they get us to fund these changes that technically we've already (as taxpayers, citizens etc) already paid for...

and yet the government (be it Labour or Tory) still seem to think that privatisation is a good idea
