make alot of music. listen to everything many times. choose the best pieces. send to a distributor and push for a "p&d" deal. p and d stands for production and distribution. which means you make the music and the record design, send to the distributor and they will take care of the rest... the tough part is actually getting your sales profits from them.

and you will hear from distributors "we don't have room on the roster for new labels" this is the distributors mantra! don't get discouraged. when you have good music, someone will eventually pay attention. hope i have been at least remotely helpful in some way bro.

always jak,i appreciate the time........now from the info i have picked up the hardest part is what you just described correct?im sure theres ligistics out the ass,but the main point of any buissness is distribution.......a friend layed out some stuff over the phone a couple of days a go having to do with "mastering" and the processes behind this task, because i still have loads apon loads to learn about compression and mastering, but better to start somewhere riight?[/p]

i think, you shouldn't start your own label. for sure, it's nice to have your own little imprint, but the problem is, that more and more people starting their own labels, but the market is goin' down and people have no money. it will be hard to develope another new label as loads of people don't fuckin pay attention to new stuff and usually only buy the shit they know.
you should try to get your stuff released on an already existing label.

pretty often musicians think, when the music is good than it will sell. forget about that. music doesn't have to be good to sell and vice versa.

if you still want to start your own, than don't rely on a p&d deal from a distributor, as the whole business is suffering and all distros i know, stopped giving p&d's.

really try to get you stuff to a label and after a few releases you can tell, if people like your stuff and if it's worth starting your own platform...but just an idea...

You´re surely right Cora, the market is going down heavy.

But its really hard to find the right label which release the stuff you would like to have out.
Its cool when you are able to release what you want. i think that is why most people have their own imprints.

@a.j. ... i totally understand why people want to start their own label...i mean, i did too...
but it's really fuckin' hard at the moment, to get a label running and at least the artists should try to get their music released on an excisting label. if this doesn't work, than it's very understandable if you start your own.
it was just something to think about, as i have to deal with this every day and it's not getting easier to sell records or to open the buyers eyes a bit more...
like a friend of mine said, a record is also as good as the person who sells it.
true!! and when i'm thinking about with which kind of people i have to deal with sometimes, you know why the records don't sell...if the person doesn't even know what you sent 1 week ago (and doesn't fuckin' care) than what can you do about it??

at least trying, and maybe it's something for mental.ind ... ???

j@ pille'ocheoni. just send a mailto:cora@mental-ind.de and i can give more datails...if you want...

Don´t got me wrong Cora, i think you´re absolutely right with that!
I see it on myself and my friends. We buy fewer records than 3/2 years ago. But because of they become more and more expensive! fucking expensive!

I think your friend is also really right with that :D can imagine what you going through!... ähhm.... no... probably not really

I´ve the hope that more and more people will get into experimental electronic music, and the real scene will develope during the next years.

I think that i haven´t the right stuff matching to Mental Ind. yet...but we´ll see where it goes near future..

peace aj

very good point @cos,i think your right, and thats the route i will take before anything, but like the first thread says, this is just an idea and gathering imformation is crucial........if after doing my homework and creating a buissness plan, and maybe getting some grants from this beautiful country than i will decide.my friend works at the small buissness admin office here in town and were working for some grants to get equipment, funding and so on and so-forth.my main goal here is to create a small co. so that us group of friends have something productive to do,and give to opportunities....but i know you know where im coming from, but the idea is noble and right, and harmless at this point.thanks for your input[pille']

if you buy gear and have a record label you can write off all that gear on your taxes. it is part of your business.
