my roomie Scott (is on this board as Flyjinxx) is a Rhodes guru. He can tune those things like mad and has a really nice one in our basement right now. I'm not sure if he's selling it (might be too expensive to ship..those heavy bastards), but he will know some decent places to try to get one from. I'll have him jump on here later tonight, or PM him with some questions.

I bought my Rhodes about six months ago. At least in the States, there are plenty around. If you keep your eyes open you'll find one for cheap.

About two years ago I found a beautiful Stage 73 in a thrift store for $275 - but it had sold a few hours before! Then a few months ago an acquaintance turned up wanting to sell his. $400 for a Suitcase 88 with some extra amp speakers thrown in.

If you're willing to pay $600-$1000 you can find one instantly :)

Now all I gotta do is rewire a couple of broken pickups and fix the sustain on three or four of the top keys...

yeah i know the maintance is high considering, but the richness,is unpresidented,untouchable..... .i have that much to spend and im doing my research."_jm where are you located?and have anymore hints?......ordering will be a task in it self.the shipping will be outrageous....on the thriftstore tip......i found a b3 mint condition in the salvation army here in town, but like your story it was sold but i got to play with it for a little while.thats too, another machine i desire to have, thanks for your help.[/p]

I'm in Seattle. Those Hammond B3s are monsters. I was offered one for free when a friend passed away, but I don't even have a place to put it - my basement is filled with a drum kit, lumber, and crates of rock breaks.

The other thing I found about the Rhodes is that you need to be able to play. This might sound obvious but it took me off guard. I was used to using synths. Even if you only hit a single note on a synth, there's lots to do with filters and mod routing. Not to mention you can sequence and automate stuff! No MIDI in on the Rhodes.

I've been taking jazz piano lessons for three or four months, because without some music theory and a little performance ability, I wasn't getting much out of my piano. Recording one-shot chords and sequencing them in Logic got old pretty quickly.

I live in Green Lake. The maintenance on the Rhodes isn't too bad once you get it sorted. It stays in tune, unlike a guitar. I'm just paranoid about desoldering the main wires from the pickups - I don't want to fuck up and end up with a nightmare parts search.
