I don't know if you guys are Richie Hawtin, or Sven Vath fans, but on the 23 of nov. they are both playing here in Los Angeles.

I really dig both these guys, Sven is a Bad MF, Last time I saw him he Killed it, He plays some great shit and always has a big fat smile on his face, fucker comes out with a bucket of champane.....Pimpin aint easy.
I've seen Richie Twice now and both times he just leveled the crowd, No 909's anymore but its off the fucking hook, and fast and dirty. Always puts on a great show, and @ closing time the floor is still packed. I'm a big fan of the old Plastikman stuff.

I just can't belive that they are going to play on the same night, Its going to be great. If any of you guys are in town don't miss. If you show up look for me, I'll be that fucker in the corner smoking the fat chocolate honey blunts.

I guess Sven and Richie just put out a new cd on Cocoon, so they are out to support.

I used to really like hawtin. his decks efx and 909 sets were real nice. but ever since he started this whole final scratch crap I have lost some respect for him. I saw him do a final scratch set and it was so boring. mediocre records and a mundane feel all the way through. proving you dont need technology to make you better. I hope he is better when you see him.

de9 closer to the edit was cool, but just lock grooves,i like his choice of perlon, and playhouse stuff.i would like to see him live,i thought the decks efx was all right there was some cool track's towards the end like the dub track and the electro track but all together,i think its time for a new invention.but no beef at all,i like him a lot, sven , havent litened to him but a little but not enough to judge.::::left::::hopefully have those tracks for ya by mid nov, dont forget about me.[/pille']

hmm i don't like s.väth... he's a old cocaine consumer, his productions are pure shit, and everytime he plays somewhere the peoples see them as a god... his time is gone, but he don't sees it...
i like the old plastikman-releases... i remember the times when i listened to the sounds in my car during my way home on sundays... but the new stuff... hmmm no

..but they're not REALLY his productions. Ralf does the studio work and then Sven stamps his name on it. Typical BIG dj stuff done by most everyone up at the top...they've got their studio trolls who do the grunt work and they sit there and go "oh, that sounds good, I like that...oh, maybe you should tweak that filter there a little bit (*puff puff puff*), c'mon you know the sound I like, MAKE IT WORK!!! (*puff puff puff*) yeahh that's sounding good now. From Goldie, to Timo Maas, to Sascha...studio trolls..studio trolls.

I still enjoy the "accident in paradise" remixes from years ago. Lenny Dee!!

i always thought goldie made his music himself. i don't think he needed trolls(btw cool word!).

i only heard sven once and yea it was hm a schranz loop thing like thousand of dj's do now. i mean his mixing and his selection is very good but its still boring looptechno. i can't listening to this anymore it makes me sad. and if i ever want to hear again a dj playin looptech i don't need to go to a dj with an entrance over 15euro

but maybe i heard sven only on one of his bad days
who knows

just a minor correction to tonewrecker's post:

väths current studio trolls are anthony rother, johannes heil & alter ego. he's updated his soundstyle a bit...

one thing to say for väth is that he's had many good remixes made over the years, that lenny dee remix is gr8, and the rother remix of schubdüse comes to mind as well...

9 times out of 10, väth's sets are really boring to me musicwise, as in very predictable, but I gotta give the man credit in the sense that he is able to entertain the masses unlike many others... the man comes from pop (electrica salsa, anyone?), and in the end that's where he is at again nowadays, at least in Germany.

but, I have heard some great sets from him over the years - I have a evosonic set from 98 that was some really sweet electro, for instance, and some clubnights where he plays more dubby/laidback stuff are nice too.

nice..thanks for the update wheezer! Anthony Rother and J. Heil huh...I think they are keeping their good music for themselves then. :-)

... heard any of the newer heil productions? he lost it like two albums ago imho... same goes for mr.rother, although he's on my personal shitlist anyway thanks to a party @ wmf ~2 years ago (psi performer release party) where he singlehandedly managed to sabotage various musical acts I had been looking forward too...

well, Heil's stuff..I've only got "illuminate the planet" which is pretty good from 98'

Rother - Sabotage?? - do tell do tell. We don't get to hear much of this juicy "causing trouble at the party" talk. which acts? what happened? dump the dirt! ha ha ha

ah well it was the psi performer release party at the wmf club, on the roster wer regis, jake mandell live, miss dinky and millions of other people I have forgotten, but those were the three that really interested me - rother billed as a dj, and dj he did, but my god what shit it was.

basically he played a trainwreck superhits of the 80ies set, ranging from hip hop be bop don't stop to blue monday, it just sucked, especially becoz the whole psi_performer release had nothing at all to do with that style of music AT ALL. the thing was, that mr.rother seemed rather drunk to me, laux was hanging around the place also and occasionally he pitched some rekkids straight for rother but most of the time he was just goofing off somewhere - then when rother's set was over, it was miss dinkys turn, who started off with some chunky enough tunes, only to be bumped away from the decks by mr.rother again, and more shitty superhits of the 80ies ensued. at some point the music stopped and mandell started playing, but after like 1 minute of what sounded like some cool stuff, a cable fell out from somewhere and back it was to mr.rother on the wheels of steel. regis were in some odd backroom by themselves basically, and somehow sitting in a large emtpy room with regis, who didn't really seem to enthusiastic about the whole situation either, wasn't the bomb. I fled shortly thereafter...

Holy Heiko Tossing Record Shaped Ninja Stars Batman!!

that is superb...sorry that the performances got mucked up by Rother's antics, but it's a helluva story.

Jake's cord trouble reminds me of the trippin' girl who pulled out a bunch of my cords as she fell away from the table years back. I was running around the other side of the table trying to plug stuff back in and at the same time reaching over the gear from the otherside to keep changing up the music. fun times.

hehe well I once had to keep to fighting guys from the decks I mixing at with one arm while pitching with the other... good stuff! :)

I heard Mr. Rother as well Djing; it was at our local independent radio station (RadioX) a while ago. Mixing was bad, but the track selection was quite funny. The last track was the “Dschingis Khan” theme.

btw.His live-acts rock! Never heard a bad live-act from him.

wheezer
24th October 2002, 20:03
yeah I heard that his liveacts are s'pposed to be good. like I said, I think he was rather drunk that evening, at least he made that impression... and mixing was beyond horrible...

i saw Plastikman/Richie Hawtin at the theOrbit (http://www.theorbit48.com) last October for the first time. I was very impressed to find him as bright, crisp and melodic in real life, as i find him on cd and i like his style of techno very much.

i find it hard to describe why i like him, as my music vocabulary is somewhat lacking, having only classical training as a cellist (a long time ago), and being mostly 'stay-at-home' person with a broad musical taste, but as a fan of electronic music, he doesn't jar my ears with too much detroit dust. My favoured leanings are towards the european style of electronic music & techno.

Sven Väth is someone i have neither seen nor heard, but he plays theOrbit on 2nd November, with an electro set from Billy Nasty in the second room (i've heard not to be missed), but as I will be @Pure Filth that night, I will have to hear him some other time.

I don't understand all this chin-scratching about final scratch. It is a relatively new piece of technology, and so the next time I hear Hawtin, I will make my comparison then. However, I don't think i would stop liking his music just because he started to use a new item of technological hardware whilst dj-ing.

I imagine that Hawtin's first pieces of music and early dj sets were rough around the edges. Perhaps it is only his relative lack of familiarity with final scratch which causes these derogatory comments, because he is still an excellent techno musician/dj without this machine.

You know guys i really Appreciate all your comments and I see truth in most of it.

As far as Sven, I'm not crazy about all his productions, I do like some of the stuff, but some are a bit to cheezy, but I give him mad props behind the decks, and give him props for having good records. Now I've only seen him one time but he was fucking good guys so I'm going to go off that. Also I respect the fact that he has been in the game a long time and was one of the OG Techno heads in Germany. I could give a shit who is producing his tracks, to be honest none of us are in his studio, so we don't know.

As far as Richie, I don't find anything wrong with using Final Scratch. I'm sure if we were on the road for ten years straight and doing as many gigs as that dude does, we would be sick and tired of carrying around our vinyl too. Thats probably the best thing that has happened to him in years. At least with final scratch he still has to mix vinyl and beats ! He was developing Final scratch with the inventors long before Stanton picked it up. So I personally don't think he sold out.

Overall guys on the 23rd this member of the board is going to be one fucked up motherfucker, I am out to have a good time, and i really hope that they don't suck, Plus THOSE CHOCOLATE HONEY BLUNTS are going to insure that things go SMOOOOOOOOOTH.

I'll let you all know how things go, OH PS Pille where are those tracks chief ? I ain't forgot about ya

I have been a fan of richie for a while and have seen him many times. he is in my opinion one of the finest djs techno has had. great technical skill and track selection etc. I liked his pure dj sets. and I loved his decks efx 909 live sets. I am not slaging on him only because of final scratch. when I saw him use it I was expecting something a bit more forward thinking from the man. when all I got was a bunch of boring loops thrown in my face. to me it was strange that now he had access to over 1000 tracks to play which is cool. but the ones that he chose were so lame I was surprised. his mixing was fine. it was purely his record selection that I thought was subpar.

I can only agree with most of the former statements. old Plastikman stuff is very cool, but Hawtin has become a bad selector (which as far as I konw wasn't always the cause). It wasn't until the Street Parade after party in 01 when I saw him play life @ Rohstofflager Zürich, and I was so disappointed by the boredom of his set that I left the room only to find Hell playing a shitty 80ies hi-nrg set on the other floor. As for Väth I don't know. I have one maxi with remixes by Terrence Fixmer, Hell and the Acid Jesus guys, which I find pretty ok. As for the rest I don't care. I saw him once play @ Tresor after a Love Parade, but that was after Cristian Vogel had made a crushing impression on me a the same morning, so you can imagine what a downer it was. I got so tired I had to leave after half an hour.

on a slightly different note - isn't it true that väth is quite a big fan of mosquito and other related labels? a friend of mine recently argued that väth played all the no-future stuff a lot back when it was relatively unknown in Germany, as such possibly forging the way for this style of music in the land of lederhosen and sauerkraut?

Yes, Emma mentioned this a few times that Sven always supported the No-Future stuff.
