yeah, sport is a good one, I'm going swimming today anyway I think, and I need to get my skateboard sent over, weather is nice here now.. prime motivation at the moment though is the horrible cough I've had for the past few weeks, one thought of that everytime I want a ciggy had been enough to keep it at bay.. have been chewing a lot of chewing gum though which I'm not sure is such a good thing....

you are on the way...its important to get in touch with yourself in this lil break of the days where you smoked..
ask yoursself "when did a smoke at the day?...and wich situations?.."
make a list.....if you need a cig...write it down and collect it in a box
at the end of the day you can see what you win...that helps!!
good luck!

weell, that is one plus point, but you're also increasing the risk of heart disease.. try and balance it with some exercise man...

I have given up smoking tobacco and am only smoking pipes at the moment. It is good - I am not smoking half as much weed as I'm not habitually taking and rolling spliffs. I feel much less monged when I do smoke weed and still able to do stuff - which I couldn't after a spliff. I can also get up in the morning as I'm not having a spliff before bedtime - so now I get up and do exercise.

its partially your fault mark ;) do you remember giving me a ciggie at a gig last year when i was pissed?
well i really enjoyed it and during a stressful period in feb i got meself a pack and took it from there.
i've never felt so sophisticated :D

Had a bottle of red wine with a friend on day one, they chain smoked in front of me all night and I was fine...
and I've had enough of the green also, this is not one of those "but it's ok to smoke bifter" giving up things, that's just kidding yourself, this is nicotine addiction begone! which means no patches, nicotine gum anything like that.. I don't understand nicotine patches, they just keep you addicted to nicotine, I want proper detox....
I 'm getting odd cravings now and then, and then I cough which reminds me why I'm doing this, if the craving gets really bad and I need something to do I'll have a chewing gum, or find something constructive to do.. I'm actually getting loads of stuff done and my room is tidy for once so it's all good... AND I'm on a curbing my drinking plot also, which isn't so hard now I'm outside the "Binge drinking" zone (I.e. the UK)
that's one thing I noticed since moving here, when I'm back in england it's like with my mates, any excuse for a pint which I really don't understand as the beer in UK tastes fucking awfull IMHO

chewing on liquorice sticks can give you a replacement for the 'something to do' aspect of it. got to be proper liquorice though, not the sweet version, just a stick from the liquorice tree or whatever it is

i hit seven years in a week's time
for me, the first week was quite easy, becuase you're all psyched up and feeling pleased with yourself.. after a week the cravings got quite bad, i was having to stop myself from shouting at grannies in the shops etc. they reached their peak about 3 weeks, then tailed off pretty quickly.

I gave up smoking at the end of January, and I would now consider myself a smoker who doesn't smoke. I have smoked othe ol' jazz fags here and there at the weekend, but it hasn't made me want to go back smoking 20 cigarettes-a-day like I was.
I smoked a cigarette on saturday night when I was out and a little footloose and fancyfree, but I soon came round to the taste and realised why I had quit in the first place. So basically, I'm in a position now that I have just had a strong word with myself and I wont go back to smoking cigarettes, even having one reinforced why i gave up rather than making me want another. I found this reassuring.

am staying off the jazz fags for the time being, as I need to kick the nicotine habit, and even if I do it sans tabac, I'm thinking it isn't breaking the ritual, one just replaces the other I think...

The nicotine habit is easier to break than the daily routine habit. It was for me anyway. You know that way when you feel you should be having a cig break or suchlike. I guess it is just a case of occupying yourself. Nicotine cravings should cease conpletely after three weeks.
As for the other weed, I guess I only have a bit at the weekends, so smoking it during the week was a no-no even when I was smoking cigarettes. I guess that helped prevent me blurring the lines i.e. replacing one with the other.

I quit smoking last august. I had tried many times before, but then I just got to a point where I really wanted to stop, so I did. the fourth and fifth day were the hardest craving wise. after that it got a bit easier. like people were saying, it should take 2-3 weeks for the physical cravings to subside as that is how long it takes for the nicotine to get out of your system. depending of course on how much you smoke and the strength of your cigs. chewing gum is fine to help with the cravings. I myself started to eat loads of chips when I quit. I kept a big bag by desk at work, so every time I got a craving I would just grab a little bundle of chips and keep them on a napkin on my desk to munch on. after about a week and half I didn't need the chips anymore. just be aware of yourself, and DON"T GET COCKY! that is what got me into trouble in the past. I'd be up to like day 8-9 and I'd think to myself, 'oh, I've made it this far, I can have one smoke and be fine'. that's how you fall back into it. anyway, I was smoke free from august up until the holidays, as they are pretty stressful for me, plus with all the parties and such. so after some indulging here and there and then due to my negative reactions to some other stresses, I am now back to smoking. more than what I was when I quit. I am up to about a pack a day (20). I know I need to quit again, but I need to let my smoking even it self out and then psyche myself up again. so keep it up M H! it is well worth the pain you are in now, as it is only temporary.
and emef! tsk, tsk. stop now. it will be a lot easier for you to quit now then in say 5 years time. it really isn't worth it to keep on it!

you should have heard my cough, Roberta and goinz can testify, they had to put up with it all the way back froim dresden at the weekend, and that is my main motivation, the coughing, the horrible black shit coming out of my lungs every day and night, and on top of that the fact I used to get asthmatic bronchitus every year as a kid, and I think I have been relapsing every year and passing it off as "Just a cough".. I was visiting someone 5 storys up the other day, and almost had to stop half way up due to my breathing... with motivation like that I don't think I'll be smoking again in a hurry, I felt like I was dying slowly, it was really wrecking my quality of life, and that's what I think about every time I gety a craving... Thanks for the advice and words of support everyone, really appreciate it, I really feel I'm going to do it though, and I'm really going to appreciate it in a few months time.. I'm looking at it this way, ok, it may be stressfull sometimes, but not as stressfull as a collapsed lung or other serious problem with my lungs, I really though I was going to end up in hospital if I didn't stop.. now that's scary...

Gotta say I really liked the smokeless atmosphere in the bars and clubs in new york, I didn't feel like smoking a fag once, which disproves the idea I had that it was booze that made me want to smoke, bullshit.. it's smoke! Was impressed that it adds an extra level of control to club nights.. controlling how they smell too...
I also like the fact I didn't stink the next day and was amazed when I realised I could still wear clothes the next day that I had worn out! (still I know this doesn't apply to you regular smokers cos y'all stink all the time anyway ;) )

im one of those social smokers so i dont wake up hacking or drowning in mucus, dont have a cough and dont stink. i dont notice any ill effects actually but im sure they are all going on inside the old lungs. i spend about £6 a month on tobacco if that.
im going to a girlfriend's house for dinner tonight and i will smoke about 5 rollies i reckon.
im going to give up when i am pregnant. no need until then.
but good luck mark, you were a serious smoker so you needed to stop by the sounds of things.

Nice one emma, yeah I was kind of serious in one sense, but I never really smoked loads, just had a really bad cough all the time, and chainsmoked when I was drinking,(which was most of the time you saw me out and about) It's going ok though, I was just in a bar for a bit drinking beer and round at a mates, people smoking all around me and to be honest, didn't feel tempted once, if I got any kind of craving I just pop a (nicotine free) chewing gum in my mouth unt alles gut...

you know what is strange. all the times I tried to quit I would always have my 'last' cigarette and it would never work. I'd end up bumming a smoke off someone or I'd go and buy a pack. the last day I smoked in august was on a saturday. I got a call from one of my friends and I met up with him to have an 'afternoon' beer. well that 'afternoon' beer turned into about 12-13 pints over the course of the day and night. I must have smoked a pack and a half easy. the next day I couldn't even bother with a smoke. I still had half a pack sitting on my desk in my room. which is where they sat. so everyday when I woke up and when I came home from work I'd see that pack chilling on my desk. but I never lit up. I'd go out drinking with friends who smoked and I'd want one so bad! a few times I'd take one from my friends and just put it right in front of me and it would sit there for hours. but I never smoked it. other times I'd come home and grab my half pack and just smell them to try and calm me down. funny thing was that I was tempting myself all the time and yet I was always able to refuse it. it was the only way I could quit. starting back smoking this year has left me feeling so disapointed in myself. I just got to get my head straight and go through all the pain again.
