i have a pro one but it is broken :(
mr chombee's cock is definitely the fattest.
me i have a big fat PC which after over a month still doesn't work properly, (iamnotangryiamnotangryiamnota ngry) with a pulsar 2 soundcard. interesting concept, if you can get it to work properly. pulsar comes with an enormous variety of fx and synths including a modular. i use it mainly for fx tho.
i use reason a lot, i love it.
i have a nord rack 2 for the wacky noises
technics decks which have seen a lot of action and badly need serviced.
but my favourite excessive item is my JBL Eon 15 500W powered speakers which have 15 inch drivers and huge tweeters - they rawk, and wouldn't look out of place on a tank.
my current studio list is in this thread and can be found here (http://www.no-future.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&postid=138843#post138843)

forgot to announce that not everything on the list is mine. the 909, 808 & 727 is from my studiomate and we shared a lot of the recording stuff. btw, the best thing is, that there aren't any neighbours around us, except another musician, but he isn't louder than we. hehe....
and yes...my cock is the fattest lol
but it's not the lenght or width of your cock...technique is what counts. ;)
to be honest: I think I was more creative with a smaller...errr...cock.

OK here goes: Surely you know what a Ukulele is? The Russian string instrument with four strings? Everybody in Hamburg watches TV Total, right? It's what Raab uses for accompanying his guests. The Guitalele is different: It has six strings (like a guitar) but tuned a fourth higher (ADGCEA) than a guitar (EADGBE) and is a LOT smalller than a guitar.
Actually, I just bought it for my trip to India earlier this year..... it's practical!

I notice a definite preference for waldorf and nord gear here. Well...old roland too obviously!
This isn't too strange I suppose but what is suprising is the number of Elektron Machinedrums. Ye lucky feckers...I want wan of them :)
I just wish Elektron would lower the price just a little bit. I mean, they have been out for ages and cannot cost that much to manufacture???
Also loads of DSI evolvers around which is nice...

yeah, its all midi. i'm an audio moron :) i've got a couple kenton midi-cv converters. the 808's got a kadi socket kit fitted and the 202's got a kenton socket kit for cv/gate control that skips over the internal sequencer to prevent latency.
i have a love-hate relationship with the mks80 - i don't use it for a long time and think of selling it and then i tweak some great sound out of it and love it again. problem is, i find i use it more in unison mode than poly mode for huge twisting morphing bass lines. the controller works by midi sysex and the response precludes much live tweaking :(
i wrote a review of it here:

I feel so outclassed.
I've just got a portastudio 424, an sm57, a choir of retards, and a BIG bag of speed.
Oh yeah, and lots of garbage bags so that the drool and spittle don't stain the walls.
One of these days I'll post picks. The one with the cleft pallette REALLY makes some interesting sounds! Reminiscent of Aphex's Elephant Song.

No, but many of us have been saving and buying gear for a long, long time. Personally, this stuff has taken me 18 years to accumulate. There's been many trades/sell offs of stuff to try to upgrade what I've got, but I think it's reached a point where the functionality of what I have allows me to experiment enough where I'm not looking for other gear because of limitations. And sometimes the limitations of a piece make for it's strength. I also have had to get gear that holds up to playing live since it is brutal on your studio equipment. Some of the stuff in my list doesn't leave the room because it would break.

hi pille,
in the last years in italy everybody is selling hardware machine at a cheap price 'cause they prefer virtual instruments and plug ins.

various other bits and noise-making doo-dads
Mackie 1202
A bunch of pedals
More software than I know what to do with
(and rarely ever use, except for Logic and Wavelab)
There are still quite a few bits that friends are in the process of building for me missing from that list, and the next proper purchase is going to be a Midas Venice 16 or 24 (haven't decided. 24 is too big to play out on, but 16 doesn't give me as much seperation as I'd like for my studio). After that, I'll prbably pickup my mate's Lexicon units, Orban Parametric, and 1178, and that should round things out nicely for a while, that is until I start collecting modular panels.

29th April 2004, 19:15
@ cristian,
Do you use your SPL transient designer much? Do you or can you get creative with it at all?
Have you checked out the Transient Designer 2? I was thinking of getting one from Ebay, nice price.
dg
@ Dan Gulberry - no , i don't use it much - it can be pretty aggro , but sometimes plug-ins do the job better - i bought it before the any plugins that worked with transient shaping were developed... its good for giving presence to something really low in the mix , like a picked guitar line or something...
@ pille' - 150,000 ??? are you mad? - do you think i'm made of money??? can you name 1 hit record i've made??? Dude - get a grip on reality - a good studio can be put together for relatively small investments over a long period of time - I have had the need for a pro / semi-pro self designed studio for over 10 years now... thats how you build things up...
@ the snailshow - i picked up the TAC for 3000 euros a few years back - i think that was the most expensive single piece in our studio... as a record label business, we have invested much more on manufacturing records, promotion, this website and building up artists , than actually on the studio...
@ databombers - both the powercores were given to me my TC Spain in return for demoing them at the Sonar Festival , last year and this year... they are OK for saving a bit on DSP, nothing to be overly jealous about though... I may be selling the Element soon at a good price , i'll mail you if that happens

if you want to hear the sounds (pretty simple and lowfi and badly mixed!), you can check out this http://minisystem.em411.com/show-addict.php?user=minisystem&tab=releases&action=&area=release&area_id=1309&show=1
just click 'Listen' and it should start to download the mp3. The growling sort of bass line is the MKS80 in unison mode (filter opens up later on), the plucky arppegiated sound is a jupiter 6, and the pads are a Juno 106.

I called the guy at the keyboard museum about 7 years ago when I was living with my girlfriend. He was really nice and started to explain to me why the ms-20 is a good synth to learn basic synthesis with, when all of a sudden my house was on fire!! (girlfriend screaming, me panicking) I had to cut the conversation short, naturally. It was a candle too close to a curtain. Well, I didn't call him back. So, tell him I'm ok. :-)

its a bit wierd to play (cant bend the strings and you get hanging notes all the time) but its so good to hear the sounds of shitty casio keybs played on a fret board. Im trying to get hold of a DG-20 as this has midi out. I took the guitar upto the stone circle on the last night at glastonbury this year to jam with the hippies. think it spoilt the sacred vibe .

your studio really needs a tidy up, doesn't it? :)
what's the monomachine like to use? is it easy to program?
RobAcid
12th September 2004, 17:41
monomachine is a monster, its a very good live machine ! easy and intuitive...

12th September 2004, 18:06
Rob, how do you make your computer generated voices (like in the intro of the liveset on your site)? I'm a huuuge fan of synthesized voices, yours is one of the best I've heard for a very long time! =)

my modest setup:
behringer 1604 mixer (this is shit, but it was cheap)
roland tr 626
casio rz-1 (this is great)
alesis hr-16 modified by alien devices (this is even better than the rz-1)
yamaha dx-7 fully tricked out with all the voice cartridges.
sequencing by atari st520 - although the monitor is broken at the moment.
proco rat distortion.
g3 iBook with logic, max, SCServer (i like SCserver the most)
tascam us122 interface - seems good for usb although i've not tried it under coreaudio/os x
next purchase:
a good (cheap) synth for doing basslines. any recommendations? i'm thinking maybe an ea-1, secondhand?
plus some decent compression.

really can't go wrong with the Micro Modular
pick them up for 150 euros second hand
Ava
14th September 2004, 12:29
hmm, i have been tempted by the micro's, but i spend a lot of time on supercollider, so i would quite like to have a synth that doesn't involve building patches, as a bit of a no brainer from when i am pissed of with programming. in fact i want a really dumb box that makes a nice noise and has lots of controls

i had similar concerns about going nord modular - but to my relief it's not work, it's so much FUN... i find it very relaxing playing with making patches.

so does this new OS X Editor work on the old micro modular? I'm feeling temped now, but theres no way i'm gonna get another machine just to do the editing.
Ava
14th September 2004, 14:59
@cutout
i guess the nord modular editor is a bit more visual than supercollider. does it have an audio-in to turn it into an effects box? i'm getting swayed towards the modular route. £100 on ebay for a EA-1 or 150 euros for something far more powerful. how does it interface to the computer? i read somewhere that the full nord modular require 2 midi -in and two midi out to program. is the same true of the micro?
r_v
14th September 2004, 15:06
you do need 2 midi interfaces for the micro mod.
the editor requires a dedicated in/out.
if you want to sequence notes/cotrol data and record knob movements from the box, you'll need a seperate in/out.
Loz
14th September 2004, 17:58
the micro mod has two audio ins and two audio outs
it makes a very wicked effects box

I scared 10,000 people (mostly geek gamers and their dad) at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena with the Zarvos voice on the Macintosh. Slow it down a bit and it sounds like a Cylon from battlestar galactica. Pump out over the Arena PA with an industrial noise track that just sounds like a load of klaxxons and the venue emptied in record time - was great fun until the Health and Safety Officer told me to switch it off...
Ava
15th September 2004, 12:17
@r_v - so its a midi in and a midi out to program it, and then another pair to send it the actual note data to play? i spose that not too bad, would just have to buy a dedicated midi interface, cos my soundcard only has 1 in 1 out
Loz
15th September 2004, 17:54
Ava: yeah.. that's it. 2in 2out midi interfaces are dirt cheap, though

The mods to my ARP AXXE are very extensive however - I have modular style ins and outs for just about every parameter. It had been sitting in its flight case for a couple of years, but I did an all analogue gig recently and re-discovered how much fun you can have with it (especially in combo with other analogue synths).
I don't know if you guys are familiar with the Devilfish mods to the Roland TB303. The guy who does these mods is fellow Aussie Robin Whittle, and he also does extensive mods to the TR-808, but there aren't so many of those around.

Yes, indeed you should get larger monitors, at least HR-824s, to go with that other nice gear you've got. No sense in having it if you can't hear what it's really doing, is there?

I was thinking more along the lines of Genelec 1029's.
The studio is in a small room and theres limited space. I've also used them a few times before and really liked working on them. They are small but you can really CRANK them as well.

hey everyone long time listener first time (in a long time) caller. :)
and, wow thats many a mighty mound o gear, sounds like fun!
finally after years (and years! like 7 of em) of sub optimal attempts at a functional music studio i have a useable setup, thanks to my new g4 powerbook 1.33, and all its splendid 0s and 1s! woo-who! its pretty minimal, but it gets the job done...
so said powerbook running:
digital performer
kontakt
absynth
peak
live
pluggo
an old g4 450 desktop running the same software with a MOTU 1224
nord lead 2
mackie cr-1604
alesis nano compressor
one sm57, one sm58
some old yorkville monitors
1200's and a severly broken rane mp22 dj mixer, and mountains of techno to go with it, an old piano and my cranium...
ideally i would like to get some sort of interface and dsp processor for the powerbook, max/msp, the new nord modular, and a real compressor,
but i am very happy to have this working setup!
cheers, j5
btw happy 2005 everyone!

My jomox xbase 09 finally arrived. It's so small and cute and old fashioned looking. I expected it to be much clunkier...the bass IS as good as expected but I wish it could also do an 808 BD impression.
Now I'm looking for a 808 to sync it with :)
