...just curious, how many of you dig electro and/or electroclash?
i'm not a big fan of it personally and i can't imagine that it sells well. which makes me wonder how fischerspooner got all that coin from ministry of sound... yet luke slater's latest didn't sell well. is this a passing fancy as a regurgitation of the eighties? i think it's effeminate techno, the antithesis of indutrial music of the eighties. not that there's anything wrong with that :)
...i remember seeing a live act where this dude sat down with a guitar on his lap and banged a tin can on the strings. then he pulled out a screwdriver and used it like a sliding device and ruined some strings. then he pulled out the electric toothbrush and made some godawful noise but it made me laugh so it was all good. GRRRRRRRRUNGGGJJJJJJJEEEEEEEZZ ZZZJJJJJJSSSSHHHHHKKKKKKKKRRRR RRRRKKKKKKKKKKKKKSSSHHHHHEEEEE EEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRKKKKKKKK KKKKKKBBZZZZZZZZZZZZBBBZZZZZZ. ..

electro's been around the whole time, it'll still be here after this "hype" dies down. you can't kill the funk..you can kill the fluff, but never the funk.

I think, electro become more interesting during last years. New sounds, more unpredictable rhythms, ...
Electro - not only Kraftwerk, Aux88...(classics)

I really enjoy the heavy, machine sounding electro..
there's a double pack upcoming on HiPass Music by Ian Lehman that is superb. kinda like Advent meets the Hacker.
systems will shake...
my old Godfather and Underground Resistance electro still crawls out of the crates once a week or so.

yeah, this "new style" seems to be ultra hype right now. i have a chuckle to myself when i see people decked out in their poonk rawk electro-stylee outfits with spiked wristbands and the big belt. funny how its been going on for awhile now and just recently have people begun to hump the domant horse of elecktro. oh, but no, now it has samples from poonk bands so zat makes it coo, yes?
where was the love when Juan Atkins was at home making this shit back in '85?

as far as i can remember elektro has always been called retro which is a bit absurd imo. at the end it's just techno with a broken beat isn't it?
and yes there's brilliant stuff and there's crap stuff - like anywhere else. my favourite should be drexciya i guess. didn't like most of that 'electro-clash' i heard cos it was just copying the 80s sound with no development. there are exceptions though.
can't stand this booty-shit too.

electro and electroclash are very different things...
electro is a pure buzz
electroclash was created for fashion purposes, and is ironic in its intent.
there are some cool people associated with this scene, that are creative and interesting enough to outlive the inevitable gory backlash (its so due in this country...i can almost feel it thundering in the distance like a giant tsunami about to crash over Hoxton)
mind you, "cool" garage rock is fucking hyped and fucking tiresome too. I went to a Skint records party last week to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. Norman Cook played Hotel Yorba by the white stripes, thereby cementing in my mind that they are the acceptable face of guuitar music for people who dont like it or know anything about it. That's not their fault, and i would not deny their talent. its just unfortunate they've been hyped to fuck in this country and so called "house" heads think that by liking that track they are all bloody balearic and "ecelctic".
Rocky played "Money's too tight to mention" by simply red at the same party. say no more
GGRRRRRRRRR

so i saw this video of 'orgy' covering 'blue monday' and yes emma you are right... it is a fashion victim extravaganza! melding nine inch nails with kraftwerk robots with alexander mcqueen plus crappy vocals. who would want to listen to that more than once? regurgitation like that belongs on the bottom of a pint you just can't quite finish cuz you know it's mostly backwash. haha... speaking of coolgarage rock- the strokes aka the 5 knuckle shuffle band, got paid $500,000 to play glastonbury, eeek! there are a million bands across the us of frickin' a that sound just like them that play for a case of beer. travelling town to town smokin' blunts hoping to be discovered by some sub pop guru.
-ya see, it does me head in when you add driving guitar sounds to a track like blue monday- how can ya not know something like that?
n.b. i think music is at an all time historical low. rock is dead. pop ain;t what it used to be. imports from europe to the us of frickin' a dropped to less than 10% of total sales. i think it used to be over 60% in the eighties. dixie chicks is #1, eminem #2 and avril lavigne #3- what the hell is that?
-what are the odds that we will ever recreate the creativity of the sixties or especially the seventies?
-by the way, guy ritchie just took a big step backwards.

Some cool electro: drexcyia and UR (partially)
ectomorph (yeah!)
some of the old shit on Sabotage records and Cheap records
the wee dj's
ultradyne
that one electro track on "all music has come to an end"
c s, when he does electro
all the mercurochrome shit when they go electro
cylobs "lobster tracks"
some adult stuff
the il.ek.tro eps on klang records
These artist have also been making electro before the so-called electroclash. They have taken it to more technoid level, where it should be.

like tone already said you cant kill the funk, and thats so true, funk is not that easy to write considering the easier genres of glitch and straight 4 on the floor techno.i have much more respect for the harder to make genres and some electro fits that category, even though breaks seem easy to write ,its not always the case.but besides the fact,my favorite electro/breaks artist of all time is egyptian lover, all of his tracks, from "i want cha"to"egypt"his shit is so fun to spin and to remeber old times.

Speaking of Garage rock, I am partial to some of it. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are pretty good, the vocals are excellent on it.
But I'm really not sure why The Hives are lumped into this garage rock thing? Despite the fact that they've been gigging and releasing records for bloody years, they're more like the Rolling Stones than the Strokes.
But every genre of music has it's poster children, the bands or artists that people who know nothing about the scene and don't really like the music can own and have their electic tastes. Hip hop had House of Pain, dance music had Fat Boy Slim, Punk had the Sex Pistols, etc, etc. It's like the record collection that everyone who knows nothing about music owns.
Next time you're at a dinner party or something around someone's house and you know they aren't really into music, have a look through their cd collection. You will no doubt see some or all of the following:
Radiohead - OK Computer
REM - Automatic For The People
Fatboy Slim - You've Come a Long Way Baby
Coldplay - Parachutes
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
The Beatles - Sergeant Pepper or Yellow Submarine
These are all albums people like this buy, because they get great reviews, and they've been told that they are the best albums of each band. They probably don't listen to them much, prefering to stick to their Robbie Williams and Kylie Monogue cds when in their cars. Nice and inoffensive.
But none the less, they own them because they think they should. Although now, at least in England, you could probably add White Stripes' White Blood Cells in there.

i'm sorry, but i like the electro clash thing. i have been giving myself small doses of it tho, as i find it wears thin pretty fast, tho none the less it flashes me back to when i first started going to clubs around '86! i guess in europe tho it must be overkill.,... also alot of my musikal peers here in bris R all starting to write this itallio hi-nrg 80's stuff too. hinting to me that its just a fad that will pass.. i i still love purist electro -and play loads on my radio show. i guess in every genre there R aways great trax.

re: the classic albums people have
well of course those are really good albums (apart from coldplay). there's no shame in having them, in fact i think it is right to know those albums well...but my guess is you have loads of other music and not just those right? Loz was saying most people across the land who dont really care about music buy those albums because they are "supposed" to.
there are worse culprits than those...if everyone had miles davis and the beach boys then fine! but i fear they will have groove armada, dido and travis more often.
and re; electroclash, i think some of it taken separately from its hype is going to be good. its just there's not enough hours in the day for me to actually care

emma i was taking the piss actually. of course these are good albums (even coldplay; i got it as a present from a girl once and well, there are days for this kind of music, not very often though).
and yeah, i have a few other records too.
i also found another cd that perfectly fits in Loz' list: Bjorks "Debut". Saw that in almost every collection i stumbled across.
Badly Drawn Boy could be among them too i guess.

The Whole ElectroClash Fad is kinda wack.........Not at all like the "all girls are lesbian" fad......Now that was a great fad, I wonder how many girls licked carpet for the sake of being cool and hip.
Humans are such sheep, "hey you should buy this !" Reply "bahh baaah" ;)
ELECTRO= GOOD
ELECTROCLASH= BAHHHH BAAAAHH
Not to mention if you PLAy electroclash records backwards there are subliminal messages that turn you into a total drag queen and make you quit your job and try out for the revival of "the rocky horror show"
I'm not shitting you kids, it happened to a freind of mine, and he still has not left the Queen Mary

my mate is an electro fiend and its quite funny cos i pretend that i hate it even though i secretly like it. we all pretend we are so macho but when it comes down to it we all sing allong to 'missy queens going to die' and steril. nobody can escape those catchy melodies. howver what i do admit to is console 1400 japaner remix is up there as one of the greatest songs ever. a sing along 6am classic.

the other night, my girlfriend and I joined a few friends who had some comp ticket to the "electroclash"tour that's going around the states right now.
Tracy and the Plastics - a girl who looked really bored as she pressed "play" numerous times on the cd player she had onstage and sang along with some other "images" of herself projected on a screen behind her. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
W.I.T.- 3 lip synced girls in marilyn manroe dresses. did a cover of the Cars "just what I needed" and then some other uninspiring tunes. the "lead" singer talked to the audience a little too long between some of the tracks and her singing voice would suddenly come in mid-sentence...funny stuff.
Chicks on Speed - Fun live show..lots of interaction with the crowd and had goofy stage props. I liked when they pretended to be cleaning everything.."dusting the shelves is sexy". the music was more punkish/guitar driven than what I've heard on their cd's
Peaches- no talent star whore..more frightening in person that what you've heard..no band/dj onstage..just her struttin' around like a mick jagger reject and grabbing people's heads by the stage to grind into her crotch as she hollers over poor MC-505 beats "it's time to get me off, it's time to get me off".
dj Larry Tee aka "I can't match any beats and I like to suddenly cut out of songs abruptly".
I'm glad I went..made me feel better about the REAL electro I choose to listen to, but a bit bummed because the general public who is going to these shows is getting a really poor represntation of what the genre has to offer.
maybe next time around..

I remember hearing him mix the extended version of fgth - two tribes, and trainwrecking to the next record right before the song hits the climax....obviously people that seem to just copy dj hell playlists and have no fucking clue about what they are playing...
