karitek
16th October 2002, 09:42
MH -that'll be a task, eh?

sheridan - i leave london on 6 Nov and am coming back to the states for 2 days, and then heading straight out to central america to do a bit of travelling until xmas. should be back in nyc by the new year (hopefully my mate who i plan on living with will even have an apartment waiting :P )

i know the name game is boring, but sheridan, u said u were from DC, right? do you know a guy named Joe Clark or Jacob Press? they both used to go out loads there at about the time u lived there. Joe's the mate i am gonna be gettin a place with in nyc.

yo kari,

no I am sorry I don't know either of those guys. my best friends name is bryan clark. that is about as close as I can get. either way I will be in dc by the end of the year. so we will have to get together and have a drink sometime after that. take care.

karitek
16th October 2002, 11:42
yeah, thought it was a bit of long shot, but anyhow...i am going to actually be in nyc, so it will be quite a treck for a drink ;), but i grew up in virginia and go back there, so who knows??

16th October 2002, 12:19
karitek is that you leaving the Uk for good, or are you just back to the US for a holiday?

karitek
16th October 2002, 12:41
yeah, i am moving back to nyc 'for good' (although i hate that phrase coz i am only 24 and who knows where i will be in a couple of years).

its all a bit scary, but i really want to change jobs and get on the books (want to be able to own a house or stuff like that eventually). and i want to see more of the world and touch base back with my friends and family in the states.

if current plans work out though, i will be back visiting really often. and NYC is wicked (even if it completely lacks a techno scene).

um, yeah...the hope is to start nites over there, but it is gonna take quite a long time i think. i don't expect that to really be able to start at least for another year...and then i still have my doubts. nyc doesnt' really like techno that much from what i remember. :(

i mean, for example, are there any members on this board from nyc??

16th October 2002, 16:37
Heya Kari..

When you get to NYC after your bit of travels, get in touch with Tony Rohr. He's been playin' around town a bit and tells me there are a few techno nights going on somewhat regularly. Dylan Drazen plays around there too.

yeah...yeah...i know. what i meant is it lacks the type of techno that i am into. i mean, no one on this board came out to living in nyc when i asked. and i NEVER see any of the brighton sound people playing on line ups there. and i find most loop techno very very boring.

u can educate them now, karitek! be an ambassador :!

and i find most loop techno very very boring.

imo it's even more boring to dance to than it is to listen to. i mean, if body responds to the music, then a repetitive loop creates a repetitive dance. (i point this out because i am neither a dj nor an electronic musician, i am one of those people who dance.....)

actionjetzon

you´re really right with that invisibleplanet!
Its very boring to dance to loopy techno...almost nothing makes me to dance really. listening to those stuff is coolsometimes

karitek
22nd October 2002, 12:06
yes, i have plans to be an embassador...one of my aims in moving back. yeah, i really dislike most loopy techno (altho there have been the occasional set that blows me away) and actually hate that when i say i like techno most people assume that is the music i am referring to. 8-()

karitek
22nd October 2002, 16:56
god, why so defensive gunjack? i didn't even see surgeon and regis on first glance on those fliers - sorry...altho they still don't spin the type of techno i am into either.

when i left nyc, the 'scene' there was crap. guilliani was in power and loads of places lost their cabaret licences. parties were dominated by kids in their mid-teens, or (if it was a 21+ event) not that well attended (i remember a sonic groove party with adam x, heather heart, and frankie bones that had only 20 other people there). there were a lot of dodgy promoters, and it became almost a weekly event that the headliners on the lineups didn't attend (a lot were not even asked). after 6 months of religious partying together, my mate joe and i couldn't recount a single good party we had gone to together. it got so bad that i started **gasp** to attend psy-trance parties because at least i was guarranteed good underground parties with people my age and no pcp or gang fights. i am being serious here - fuck, i moved across the atlantic coz of it.

a LOT has changed in nyc since then. there is a new mayor, sept 11 happenned, a lot of key techno people have moved there. there is actually a scene there now, you are right gunjack. BUT compared to London it is miniscule. we have had this discussion on this board before about how electronic music is not big in the US and that is true in nyc. I don't know where ur from gunjack or what japan is like...but i know the US electronic music scene is about as big as the UK hiphop scene and vice versa.

So yeah it is gonna be a major change for me to move. Now there are techno events playing music that i find interesting EVERY single weekend in London. I will have to wait maybe once every 2 months (if i am lucky) for that. I do DJ and plan on trying to impact the scene over there a bit - introduce people to some new styles of music, and eventually do nights there with aim as well. I am not the type of person to just complain about something without at least attempting to change it. So sorry for making a blanket statement, but compared to London...

anyhow, i am looking forward to moving back.

Tomoki

These 21+ and 18+ events are a mystery to me. What’s the reason to make parties 18+ or 21+?

I saw a while ago on the Twilo homepage that the techno-events were 18+ and the house-events 21+.
18+ for the entry and 21+ for drinking alcohol?? Do the barkeepers control everyone’s ID, if he wants some alc?

I assume if someone is under the age of 21+ and he wants some alc he can send his over 21-year-old buddy to the bar for bringing the “hot drinks”. What’s that?

The same with the bottles of alcohol in brown bags on the street.

hm and u can buy weapons and drive a car with 16 but u are not allowed to fu... if u are under 18 ;)
strange country ;)

karitek
22nd October 2002, 18:14
well, at those events u get a wrist band usually that allows u to buy drinks. if u r found drinking without it, u get chucked out. or there is the classic stamping of the back of ur hands with these huge embarrassing (UNDER 21) stamps that take days of washing to come off....grrr...

i actually got stopped on the street brown paper bagging it, and had to go to court for posession of having an open container of alcohol in a public space about 4 years ago in nyc. an interesting fact was that when i went to court, i was in a court room full of similar offenders (who all violated one of guilliani's new quality of life laws) and i was the only white person there....and i was caught with a bunch of my non-white friends. made me realize how racist the enforcement of these laws was.

jukka
22nd October 2002, 18:31
there are way too much racists in the us, aren't there ???

and lots of strange laws oversea.

DsD
22nd October 2002, 18:32
uh i always thought that the stories about the discrimination of black people where not as bad as the medias say... but that sounds realy bad... i think i`ll stay in good old germany. seems that we have less racial prejudices than in the usa.

karitek
22nd October 2002, 18:41
i don't know about comparing racism across countries coz i only about where i have lived. i think that in the US people are a lot more racially conscious (while in the UK, and i am guessing a lot of europe) people are more class conscious. now saying that the US is more racially conscious does not equal them being more racist, in fact, i think it makes issues better because ppl are making more of an effort to solve racial problems. i mean, guilliani was horrible and there were loads of protests and demonstrations against his racist policies and enforcement...i wouldn't say that on the whole the US or NYC was racist, please don't read that post as that. it was meant to criticize the old mayor. also, i think racial issues are more prominent in the US coz it is a much more multicultural country than a lot of the European ones (outside of the UK), but then again, i don't really know about much of Europe.

but i don`t want to visit the usa cause i am against bush and i don`t want to spend 1 cent or more for this country. ;)

karitek
23rd October 2002, 10:36
yeah, i guess one of the main things i learned from living abroad is how hated americans and america is by the rest of the world. most americans don't fully realize that (most people from any country don't realize how they are perceived by the outside of world). its sad really coz as an american there is not much we can do about it - voting has completely lost its power because the government is really controlled by big business, not democracy or the people anymore. most people don't want bush in power. i dunno...its too early in the morn for me to think bout all this...

it can change mine :!

america is it's people, and it's land and it's origins (world-wide) it's a land of settlers.
America is not it's president. this much is obvious. the fact that the american people, like others, are hypnotized by this psycho-media snake is not their fault. propoganda of any kind is a powerful persuader.

karitek
23rd October 2002, 12:24
yeah, and the majority of people in any country don't question what the media tells them. there are just as many independent thinkers (i think at least) in america as i have met here in the UK - it is just that usually people just looka the mindless masses when viewing a country as a whole.

jukka
23rd October 2002, 18:24
don't get me wrong....i never said i don't like americans or something like that.
i just can dislike people i met personally and not therefore.....all americans i met so far were friendly and in no way a racist.

well, M H (http://www.pure-filth.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/mark_hawkins.html)
I certainly didn't fall asleep while you were playing your set *ggg
and yes, Daniel Benavente (http://www.pure-filth.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/daniel_benavente.html) DID rock it...

For me it was a night of firsts:
i don't normally have DJ's on my wishlist, but my german/austrian techno-freunden have raved on about Herr Benavente so much!
Last night was the first time I had enjoyed his DJ set, and some lucky people, who will be going to karitek's leaving party (http://www.no-future.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1351) in London this evening, and will have the pleasure of experiencing it all over again, with subhead there also! *eifersucht*

It was also the first time i had heard the set played by Esther Ofei (http://www.pure-filth.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/esther_ofei.html) (and she is also the first female techno musician and dj whom I have ever had the pleasure of hearing/meeting!)

I had such a wonderful time, the people at Pure Filth were very good company, and I look forward to a visit to Nottingham once more, in the not too distant future.
