View Full Version : Can supplements effect your mood?

I woke up feeling particularly low today and then I realized that I had just started taking complete supplements yesterday.
I have noticed this effect with vitamins before many times and thats why I stopped taking them. Has anyone else noticed this effect?
Now, I know there is loads of research results showing that supplements, particularly B vitamins, can help or even cure depression.
But what about too much vitamins. Could it be that because I am a careful veggie and eat lots of wholemeal cous cous, brown rice/pasta, oats, pulses and peas/beans that I am getting too much, B6 for example by adding supplements to the mix?

Yeah, that's what you'd expect but somehow it works the opposite way for me. I feel near catatonic if I take strong supplements especially at the beginning.

if you eat a balanced diet, and stuff - then you shouldn;t really need suppliments i reckon.
my two pence worth.
but i dont really know much about anything.

most of the b vitamins have low - zero toxicity, and in the amounts you would be taking them, even with supplements + natural sources there's no chance i dont think.
you have to be careful with vitamin A as high doses can cause liver damage
ive never heard of anyone being depressed because they are taking a supplement, but are there lifestyle factors that prompt you to start taking a supplement, such as a period of alchohol use, that could be causing the low feeling?

5HTP is good for a perk-up, especially if you've been overdoing things a bit. not for too long mind you.

I agree, I wouldn't have ever thought that it should cause a problem But I have noticed this so many times now and even my gf noticed it this time.
I'm a lightweight when it comes to alcohol so it wouldn't be that. Could be the stress of starting a new job, I suppose.
I didn't take them for years for this reason and then I started taking them again because it seemed like just a co-incidece. And then it comes down like a ton of bricks, just as I start taking them again.
I think I'll try just Iron supplements alone as that is the thing I might need the most with a veggie diet. It's hard to eat loads of spinach and brocolli all the time :)

Isn't B12 the one that they slashed the RDA by 5 times, I remember lots of woman's mags and stuff whinging, cos it's supposed tbe good if you're on the blob.
Apparently some research showed that there could be long-time adverse effects to over use of B12...
or am I thinking of B6...

b12 - wicked music (sorry - thread hijack).
Supplements make me trip me out. I once took a Nutrition bar on the train down to Exeter and tripped over a sandwich on the floor. And hurt my knee. And my willy.

5HTP's a seratonin booster you can get from health food stores. there's loads of intersting stuff about it on the net.

Yes, B12 is wicked music. They retired from music, more or less, didn't they? I think I remember a kirk degiorgio interview that said that...

Maybe this supplement thing is something to do with that roaccutane junk that I took years ago. It's like a super high dose Vitamin A treatment for acne. You can't take vitamin A when you are on it because of the risk of overdose/liver failure. It's nasty stuff and has been linked to depression.
Maybe there are still high levels of Vitimin A floating around my body.
Where are my lawyers :)

slightly off-topic, but in reference to steev's comment, i tried getting into neotropics a few years ago with a course of choline and b5, and i got headaches every day. i didn't think much of it at first because i get fuckin' headaches at the drop of a hat anyway, but i'd heard they were a possible side-effect with choline. indeed, as soon as i stopped taking it the headaches stopped coming. as often

Some of them are alright. I was taking Tyrosine for a while. Good stuff. Helps rebuild some of the precursors to repair the seratonin and dopamine-related damage I have sustained. I can't say for sure that I'm better off having taken it than not as I am where I am, but I think it helped. Some supplements are good in healthy (not over) dosages, especially under specific conditions, like fighting off a cold, or doing a lot of physically stressful activity where your muscles need to rebuild quickly and shed excess lactic acid, etc..
I reckon if I'm in pain form overworked muscles or whatever, my mood is gonna change. If my body is lacking a nutrient, yeah, I notice, and it indeed affects my mood, usually NOT for the better.
