the september 2002 issue of sound on sound has a review of the MPC4000, you might find something useful there.
I think that the general gist of the MPC2000 is that it's an all in one solution to music production, in that it's a sequencer and sampler all in one.
Personally, I think you'd be better off investing the money in a laptop PC, it'd be far better equipted for the price, and has all the portable advantages the MPC offers.

yeah, well i guess the portabitlity isnt what i shooting for but in all round all in one,and i need some hardware no more software!but i see your point you really dont need hardware nowadays, but you know, somethings got to change in ones methods of production.thanks for your input[pille]

Totally rate the MPC 2000, wicked if you want to play live, more portable than the 4000, but with less features....so less of an all in one solution....
But really portable, you can fit the MPC and a synth in a suitcase, hey presto *live set*
Much more solid sequencer for midi sequencing than a computer (So good if you got other MIDI gear) and drum sounds seem to sound Phatter out of the MPC than they would out of say a S 3000... only problem is you can't spread a sample across the keyboard...
for the price though, well worth it, I've seen them going for under £300 in the UK second hand....
I swear by my MPC/Nord Modular combo....

You know me Gunman, a few cheap tricks, some backhanders etc etc
Running on a borrowed one at the moment, so will be looking for a new MPC2000 soon (Not XL, unless I can transfer my liveset straight across to the XL) And in the UK as well, I can't be doing with putting vast sums of money in bank accounts of people that live far away... I may well be in Germany soon though at some point...Bit of a tall order really, I should just look in the back of sound on sound....

nice mention of the powerful MPC/Nord combo Mark..I agree although my nord is limited to the small, but fiesty NL 2 rack...4 outs of power..whoohaa.
There is one feature of the MPC2000 that was lost in the upgrade to the XL version. On the original MPC2000, if you had a program change associated with the track info, it would RESEND that change everytime the track looped around. This would completely reset your sound which is cool if you are programming in 40-100 different control changes to devaste the sound. Not good if you want to do long filter sweep "live" as the sequence is running that keeps going beyond the reset point.
Now, on the XL, the system ONLY RECOGNIZES the program change when the sequence is FIRST PULLED UP. After it loops around (if the sequence# doesn't change) it is ignored. Again this has its advantages, but it also doesn't always retrigger your sound the same way. Yes, there is a workaround for this by going into step edit and placing the program change on that first beat manually, but damn, when you are putting together a liveset with over 100 different patches being used in an hour..who wants that extra work.
I still love this box more than any piece of hardware I've ever had..*runs off singing praise to the technology gods at Akai*

love and hate the mpc. love the mpc/modular-combo, but love to have a step-sequncer around even more.
still looking for an asr-x instead of my asr10 - then there's no need for a mpc 4k because the ensoniq can do all those sampling tricks the mpc 2000 lacks.
mpc-freaks from germany: we'll do a mpc-slam with rulez like the poets have on poetry-slams. first one is on nov 1st at monte christo, cologne. if you're fast - maybe there's still a chance to play. 10 minutes time - and if you reach the finals again 10 minutes...
