ok here is a question.
this dude I go to school with just got the titanium g4 laptop a little while ago.
he was telling me that he can't take it on planes that go internationally since
it is considered a super computer. is that true?? I don't think it is since I have seen techno acts from overseas come to america and use said computer.
if it is such a big deal then why would the american government allow autechre,
the biggest of all techno terrorists come to washington dc and do a live act with their machines of death????

I don't know .... it's certianly not gear snobery on my part ...
All I know is the developer of AudioMulch has only written if for Windows (I think it takes a lot of effort to do cross platform stuff)...
I have played with Live .. but found that my fav VSTs seem to lock my machine (it's not the most powerfull laptop in the world) ...

the G4 is cool - but why should it be called a super computer!?
It runs the same musicprogs as G3 and Pc´s and has some bugs as any other computer on the market....
hmm..-.
anyway - you photoshop freaks, try this out:
take a picture (color) in size 4000x3000 pixels and turn it 3 degrees clockwise. See if you can make it under 15 seconds..... if so it´s a kind of a super computer!
:o)

the macs are suposed to be considered super computers by how many math calculations it can do in a second. apparently the g4s are capable of launching missles remotely as such. but I am sure that a high end pc could do the exact same, so it could be a load of hog wash. I tried the photoshop test and it took my g4 800 mhz w/ 512 of ram, 20 seconds to rotate a color image 4000 x 4236 pix 3 degrees clock wise. maybe not supercomputer, but it was certainly fast enough.

Hmmm, I suspect this is bollox...
A handy although not totally accurate way of describing a computer was how many floating point calculations it could execute in 1 second. If it was capable of doing more than a million or a gigaflop as it is called - then it is deemed to be fast enough to be a super-computer.
Although there are many other things that mark out a super-computer from a regular computer.
The Apple G4 was the first desktop computer to achieve greater than 1 gigaflop. Naturally, Apple used this as their marketing campaign - That it was a super computer on your desk. It isn't really, if you chained a bunch of them up into an array - then you would have a super computer.
Any way its also illegal to import computer equipment into certain countries, namely Iraq, because they could chain them up into an array and make a super computer - something they could use to make missile guidance software, or design and test things like Nuclear weapons. So the rumour probably came from that fact, obviosly because the G4 is perported to be a super computer then you can't import it. I reckon its just bollox....
There was a similar thing about the Playstation 2. Some papers carried a little thing about how because they were games console they weren't computers and so could be bought by the Iraqis. There was some study saying the CIA reckon they could be chained up and used to make a super computer for Saddam Hussein. It had an amussing cartoon of Saddam in front of a TV, guiding bombs and missile using a Sony PSX Controller... :-)
