View Full Version : Mainstream Techno Is Good

I have just acquired 2 mix CDs that I thought I wouldn't like but are actually lush, and have made me think maybe I should go clubbing more.
DJ HELL - Electronicbody-housemusic: CD2 is all EBM style shouty shit, but CD1 is full of classics by e.g. UR (Inspiration), Millsart (Now Is The Time), Derrick Carter (Where U At?), Recloose (Ain't Changing) etc etc and makes me feel inspired and alive and stuff.
F-Comms - Classic And Rare: 1 CD each mixed by Juri Hulkinnonen and Laurent Garnier. I forgot what a fantastic DJ LG is - his mix is all F-Comms trax, but it's got a brilliant UR/Red Planet feel to it. Much more melody / cheesy lyrics than I usually like, but it's so well programmed and mixed I am absolutely loving it.
Vive la fromage!

listen to sets from dj hell is mostly a )nice( surprise....allways lots of oldschool classic tunes (origins from the 80's).
and yes lg is a great dj..think his stay in detroit influenced him a lot...i heard he will stop dj'ing soon !!!is it true ?

but is this really "mainstream" techno ?
i am thinking of worse tracks if i hear "mainstream"...

I would say it is mainstream but Hell has.... had his very good days. I still play "its like that" on Magnetic North.. + that mix cd is alright I think...

this thing on magnetic north rocks!
it was dj hell "eat my house" that got me into buying records and i still love this piece of vinyl. though i'd say his older records are better than the newer ones.

I have a wicked track by hell on sativae number 8. I think that is some good stuff. I have a lot of respect for hell, but I just don't dig on this whole electro clash bullshit that he has been pushing.

Hell's "eat my house" is definitely one of my personal classics. Also Hell used to be a quite good dj in the mid of the 90ties, and he was playing electro quite before everyone else (in the 90ies), and also very good one.

Does anybody have a spare copy of this record (Not the remixes)
I always thought it sounded like it was being played backwards, totally warped record...
Disco B really ruled around this time...

I do like Gigolo’s releases, not all of them, stuff like miss kittin & Hacker album, fisherspooner, tiga & zyntherius and mostly all recent miss kittin releases sounds like crappy kitsch to me. But I love all other Hacker records I’ve heard, also Terence Fixmer, David Carretta, Vitalic, A number of names, Dopplereffekt, Steril, Japanese Telecom, Tuxedomoon, Chris Korda, The Advent, Hell, Richard Bartz , etc. are great.

I wouldn't call Recloose, Derrick Carter, Mike Banks, Mills etc mainstream, nor would I consider the likes of Front 242 etc mainsteeam just because Hell plays it.
I would consider that Hell is getting value for money with the majority of his samey electroCASH ventures on Gigolo, but it doesn't mean that he needs to compromise his own record selection. He has obviously done this to keep a credible stake in things whilst in the background he is coining it in from nauseating "hits" and Dave Clarke big "choons" like 'Sunglasses at Night' and whatever dross he can pimp out.
I'd be interested to hear a definite definition for "mainstream" though

i don`t know many labels which don`t have one or two crap releases but i know labels which have much more crap relases then gigolo. ;)

Have you noticed that some of these releases you considered good (and I agree with you) have all been licensed from other labels, and in addition are re-releases, compilations or following the lead of another label.
On license...
Japanese Telecom (Intuit Solaar)
Doppplereffekt compilation (Dataphysix)
Advent (album originally on Kombination Research)
following suit...
Shari Vari remixes (Puzzlebox)
I dare say if I started looking I would find more. To me it stinks of cash as none of the above are really original tracks exclusive to the label. Unfortunately this appears to be a growing trend in the past couple of years.

do u mean the trend of rerelaseing them again on a bigger well known label to get more money?
sometimes re released after one or more years?
"sunglasses at night" (not good but a realy good example) was released on gigolo and then re released on low spirit. we all know that low spirit means "we want much money" ;)
that is real commerzial sellout ;)

Rereleasing old tracks with crappy new remixes is the worst thing in my opinion.
And so all the good memories from this track are blown away…

It's a relative thing innit - although UR etc are certainly not Scooter, the tracks in question are a good deal more well-known (in the UK at least) than most No Future artists, for example.
Is it true that i-F and some other artists have started a 'campaign for real electro', and are calling for boycotts of Gigolo, City Rockers etc?

I read something like that weeks ago on the bunker or viewlexx homepage, but i cannot find it again...

This is the text from the temporarily closing:
Electro. Mediocrity has become the norm, the passion has been killed. Pretentious wannabe rockstars with inflated egos rule the mediawaves, cheap imitation clones with clown make-up on their faces rape the style, hyped up labels capitalize on it through slique A&R fistpuppets and mainstream culture - that two faced hydra - tries to assimilate it. Meanwhile white middle class consumerist kids with mohawks run around like lost chicken, eagerly lapping up the stale cum the corporate moloch spurts onto their spotty faces as their role models down another valium with a dirty brown sherry and drag themselves through the twilight of their miserable lives in front of a tv set where a video of Liquid Sky runs on repeat.
NO MORE.
We dont need the hollow catchphrases, the carefully created eighties retro fad, the empty music, the jaded cynicism or the poser attitude of the fake Gigolos who only sell their asses to the masses. You can all follow your leader into the electroclash HELL!
The combined The Hague Underground has shut down the airwaves.

I-f should watch his mouth. I haven't heard good stuff from Bunker in years. And he is definitely not unguilty when it comes to the downfall of electro.

opinion noted. i happen to feel the exact opposite. making a certain piece of music more readily available to listeners is never a bad thing.

I have nothing against it, but don’t sell the soul of the track with cheap and dull remixes.

@the viewlexx/global darkness/hotmix thing
I think that this is exactly the wrong approach - there's shit music out there so stop making/publishing music yourself? wtf? with that kind of logic all of you people might as well give up now since there's britney spears or what have you doing her thing...
oh, and I think it's a funny coincidence that i-f is getting a new album published on disko b very soon....
Tomoki
5th October 2002, 13:44
I don’t think it’s a coincidence, because DiskoB has an other conception to the music than Gigolo, although there are some artists that are releasing on Gigolo and DiskoB together.
Look this T-Shirt!!

well it is funny if one considers that disko b & gigolo share the same office hehe...
originally I had understood that gigolo is basically a sublabel of disko b but I was recently corrected in this matter...
