have a go with the old Gmail Drive with one of them. Top stuff.
http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm
GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a 1GB storage medium. GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explore blah blah

I never understand the point of these sites - so they've got control of your e-mail. Who cares?
I probably don't have the knowledge to create totally secure e-mail system. I probably don't have the need for a totally secure e-mail system - this is partly because I'm not
a) a terrorist
b) a criminal
c) a political activisit
d) paranoid
And even if I was any of the above, do you think I would use e-mail to do my business... ...as it goes Google, Microsoft etc are welcome to my data, random wafflings, chats to mates etc - if they want to clog up their servers with it fine.

I agree with grobs. also, don't you think that hotmail or yahoo would potentially have the same abilities as google?

i also agree. fucking read everything i have. i have nothing to hide, and am not connected to any threat org or anything not sound to the government of the united states, other than smoking pot occasionaly. which you can come check my fucking house right now, and i have nothing. so yeah gmail rocks, and its free and easier than any other mail except my own mail server which i am always troubleshooting.

In fact I would go so far as to say that this is just paranoid bollocks - Google go to all this trouble to come up with advanced systems run searches and do a pretty good job of matching up what your e-mail is about to some handy adverts. The sort of stuff that computer experts were dreaming about 10 years ago...
...and all computer experts can say now is ooh privacy issues - oh look they know what your e-mails says - Google says, no we don't 'know' what your e-mail says, we just have advanced search algorithms that pick out keywords.
To which the paranoid junkies say 'oooh how do we know' Oh how very scientific, and lastly who cares. if you're that bothered then just don't use Gmail and try and bomb the Pentagon or something - and as it goes there's probably already a system that will pick up this post and analyse it because I used the words, bomb, terrorism, Pentagon - lets throw in Al Qaeda just to be sure... ...and say hello to the spooks at Echelon!

Maybe we should test it out - lets all get Gmail accounts and then send each other e-mails detailing some massive plot to do something really bad - and see if anything bad happens to any of us...
Anyone? Come on what have you got to lose? Your freedom! And what have you got to gain, a quick part in Micheal Moore's next film...

Heheh, I used to have a signature to every e-mail that had keywords in (semtex, bin laden, uranium, IRA ETC)just for a laugh, no men in black ever came round my house.

yer man but nor just the government, man those damn arabs too. its actually two alien races that landed here when their planet became infested with nano machines. Like the leaders have had all the technology for millions of years. they built those temples where everything is based around roots of 7, 13, 91 and 193 which when summed is the factorial of Pi and it lines but with Saturn every 41 days. That tells them where the oil is to keep the super computers going. Its actually all about sand not oil cos they drink glass.

OhKay then... Like Hotmail/Yahoo/any decent sized free email provider doesn't use marketing - yes of course I could track down an 'underground email provider' to give me 'the best most damn underground cutting edge email service i can possibly get'... but then they would 'sell out' and i'd have to find another. Frankly i just want an easy to use email service. I've never, ever in my life clicked on a google adwords advert.
Actually that's a lie - one company paid to use the name of my employers in their advert, and we all spent all day clicking on their paid link :) they soon removed it.

Reminded me of that crazy shit with CAAT being spied on by BAE or whoever... .
Heard Charles Clarke say something the other night on C4 news.. where he was saying we need a debate to decide what we consider a serious enough threat to hold people without trial.. in his example he compared "people who want to change things" with "people engaged in planting a bomb". The implication's clear that whilst political activism isn't yet classified as a crime.. they're at least starting to see it as being on a sliding scale with terrorism.
But with regard to Gmail.. I'd worry about profiling and advertising a bit. But anyone who's even the tiniest bit concerned with security is never going to send plaintext email anyway. If someone reads all my mail it'd be embarrassing... but they'll never uncover my fiendish gunpowder plot.

well, i saw a quite a few threads here about privacy issues over the last few years and every time again i'm surprised how little people care about their data. i always think you brits have no problem with these issues since you're already used to being spied on by cameras all day or having your license plate stored when entering downtown london. i still can't understand that attitude. there are 2 (no, 3, i forgot the aliens, of course) factions which would like to know everything about you, the gouvernment and the companies. (of course times are long gone when you could draw a clear line betwen those two.) google's scanning of mails is definitely not the most dangerous or intrusive thing going on - at least as long as those adverts look like this (easy to overlook).
the more severe problems are cams (soon with working face regonition), dna sample databases, "criminal" or "terrorist" databases, consumer profiles etc. most people never hesitate to give all their data to a company just to get a bag of potatoe chips or a free big mac ("bonus points"). and what about RFID, most people haven't even heard of it, although it's already in use - and it will be soo comfortable in the supermarket... ("i just want an easy to use supermarket, about the rest i don't care!") what about the flight passenger data european airports have to send over to the us every day (gained by blackmail). also here in germany the state claims more and more rights to spy on people, without a judge's decision, even in their own home. we're now leading (again) in phone tapping. statistics show very little effect - same as with CCTV, but the gouvernment demands even more.
i cannot understand how anyone can have this attitude: "i don't give a damn if companies and/or the gouvernment know where i walk, what i eat, what i buy/talk... i'm neither interesting for them nor am i interested... especially not in politics..." of course, gouvernments will not draw attention to this matter, so as long as you are really a good citizen, there won't be no problems and you won't notice anything. but there are other people who have political claims, and it's because of those (and because of the fact that a certain situation could make going political necessary for anyone) that everybody should oppose and keep his data as secret as possible. and not give it away for a burger. the building of the infrastructure takes place now - no matter if 1984 fear is currently en vogue or not.

The fact is, all communication for the whole of western europe and the states can be monitored 24/7 by 'them (http://cndyorks.gn.apc.org/mhs/)' - there's no escaping it, so basically if you are planning a terrorist attack or smuggling drugs, don't arrange it using email.

I've yet to find a use for my gmail account. I have always used pop3 email accounts, I like having my emails there on my computer for some reason. Is it just that some people prefer using webmail? Has anyone been sent a 700Mb email?
