better than their recent stuff, not as good as their old stuff
mind you, it's recently occurred to me that when i think of their old stuff, i'm basically thinking of dig your own hole. i thought there were some rockers on planet dust, but overall it never really moved me. so maybe i'm not really a chems lover after all, just a big fan of dig

Chemical Brothers used to rock it live - havnt seen them for a while. Their light shows were real mind bending stuff - done by some guys called Vegetable Vision if i remember correctly
Chemical Beats blew up everytime!!

christ almighty.

The only pro-chemical thing I can say is when I saw them play live years ago, when they were still the dust brothers I think, partway through one of their songs they had very large animated flames projected onto the stage and loads of tripping kids started freaking out. That made me laugh.

Why? Cos they're a bag of bland. Chemical Beats was pretty much the only good track they've ever made.

That's the EP with Chemical Beats as the lead track.
I dunno, there's something blokey and overly 'sceney' about them which rings hollow for me. In interviews they always go on and on and on about being true to the underground etc as if that's what they were doing by playing Beatles tunes to a bunch of old music industry lags in a pub in central London.

Their new album sounds just as you would expect: polished and pumping but totally out of touch with anything new and interesting. They haven't got any prettier over the years either.

Yeah the first interview I ever read, before I'd heard their music.. they were going on about Basic Channel... which I'd just discovered and was rocking my world, imagine my dissapointment when I heard their records...
They know how to write a catchy tune, I'll give them that.. catchy like a rusty nail.

nah. as far as dancey dance music goes - you know, like club music - the chemicals at their best have definitely pushed the envelope. i certainly wouldn't go lumping them in with dirty vegas or anything, anyway
lot of yers: you can't deny private psychedelic reel. come on, now

They played in sydney last night, but the john spencer blues explosion were on at the same time. I chose to see john spencer, he rocked! le tigre, electrocute and atmosphere were also great at the big day out festival in sydney.

Question:
I`ve allways asked myself if they were the same "Dust Brothers" who produced alot of hip hop acts in the late 80 ties, such as "young mc, tone loc etc....
Does anyone know????
Hagbard
27th January 2005, 10:38
No they weren't the same. They stole the name and then had to change it to The Chemical Brothers.
It's a pretty arsehole thing to do in the first place really.

alright alright
was just tryin to say its quite fucking offensive if your into dance music and someone comes along and goes well if were talking about DANCE music, you know CLUB music, then the chemical brother have 'pushed the envelope'
as if theyre not that good compared to most music but they are compared to other dance music, as if there isnt lots of dance music thats much fucking better and more interesting

I dunno why people hate the term dance music so much... In fact only a couple of weeks ago I got a snotty response on this board for using that term :)
I've always been baffled by purists... I can't be arsed wasting my time trying to decide if something is House or Techno, frankly if I can't decide it probably means I'll like it more anyway.... ooh tech-house... that phrase strikes terror into the purists heart.
Sorry I'm off thread, the chemicals suck.

not at all. i meant that in the context of conventional dance music, the chemical brothers have fucked with those conventions and done it well. bit bloody pointless comparing the chems with, like, cylob or something, isn't it? like saying you hate the ramones because their music can't touch the complexity of wagner. kind of missing point, that
robin
27th January 2005, 15:51
i know what you meant,
my point is you dont need to compare the chemical brothers with cylob, because there are plenty of other operators in 'conventional dance music' who make the chemical brothers look like the useless shitheads they r
akufen is the first person that just popped into my head as an example of someone whos genuinely 'pushed the envelope#
Hagbard

Akufen has definitely pushed the envelope. I just wish sometimes he'd try pushing a different one for a change now and then :)

After pushing the envelope for some time he suddenly realises he's spent the last year punting a manky post-it note round a dusty floor.
That 6/8 one on the first Psychometry is still great.
Chemical Brothers are dull dull dull. Best reason to listen to them is if you're watching that Gondry video of the dancers and the morphing and the dancers and the giant cardboard heads and the morphing and the dancing. Can't remember the title.. it's on the "Directors" DVD and isn't the one with the train.

Chemicals is just Pop music, you know it's dance stuff, driving hard beats, some might even call it techno, but it's Popular music - music for the high street. I listened to the new album, there's nothing wrong with it - but I find it lacks anything original, it just a bunch of sounds and arrangements - fairly safe and easy to digest for the masses. Nothing wrong with that, not everyone has or even want to tread down the road that leads to this, most people are happy to enjoy music at this level. In fact I'm being unfair, I quite like a lot of pop music, the chemical brothers is too po-faced to be pop music. But that's part of the marketing I suppose - the people who buy into it like to think they're at the cutting edge - like people who buy Global Underground mix CDs and think they're underground...

i just like their tunes, dammit. read all you like into it, draw up your consumer and psychological profiles, but all there is to it is i like their tunes. this does not say anything about me, my life, my iq, my experiences, my political leanings, my worldview, my state of mind, my wider music tastes, or anything else. it says nothing about me beyond the fact that the chemical brothers' music has been known to get my adrenalin pumping and lovely serotonin hitting me in the brain sending waves of delight running through my body. i imagine the same can be said for anyone else who likes them

i was on the tube once with a friend and we were stood right by the one with the long hair, who was slumped in a chair. there was no-one else near him and it stank of eggy farts. it's kinda ruined my appreciation of their music ever since.
to me the CB are about 50/50 - i really like a lot of what they do, and the 14th C Sky ep is still one of the few records i feel kinda priviledged to own. they also helped give birth to the let forever be video which is one of the best ever.
