see I just tell people I listen to techno. when they say what genre? I just say that is the genre. then they get a little confused look on their face. or somtimes I just say I listen to rave music. but then they want to talk to me more. :!

pille'ocheoni

YEAH I USE TO SAY THAT TOO."OH WHAT DO YOU SPIN?"USED TO THE SAME THING,SHERIDAN-BUT NOW I SAY ELECTRONICA OR NEW FORMS OF FREE JAZZ:) BUT HEY I STOPPED TALKING TO PEOPLE WHO CANT TELL THE DEFFRENCE.OR JUST NOT TALK ABOUT IT AT ALL-NOTE:THE BEST MOST CREATIVE PLACES TO FIND COOL NAMES IS SOME ELECTRONIC MAGS_example=CHUNKY.ANALOG FLAVORED,GLITCH,WITH A CHILD TENEDENCY ,AND KINDERGARTEN INOSENSE.HAHAHAH

Sheridan
23rd September 2002, 21:15
I am at the point where I don't even tell people I dj. basically because I have to say the same shit everytime. "what do you spin?" techno. "what kind?" techno. "like who do play, chemical brothers, oakenfold, (insert bull shit artist here)? NO, I play techno. "like who then, tell me." I rattle off a list of names I am into at that moment but I keep it a little more overground. "oh ok, I've never heard of any of those guys" yeah I figured.

marcel

i like calling it 'free techno' referring to free jazz
and because i'm always feeling so free then listen to it

anyhow, or call it freak funk, its always funky i would say and sounds freaky for mostly all of my friends (not for me)

i preferr free techno but hey, a name? it doesn't really matter, does it?

I call it noise, or broken beat, experimental electro.

But I Like noise the best cause cause of the negative connotation, then they think I'm stupid and they stop asking questions. Like I'm going to sit there and sound off all these names of artists, that i know these fuckers don't know.

Noise is a lovely word really, and can cover so many bases if you think about it.

Hehe I remeber the first time I bought a Cristian Vogel record, i sold that shit, I was like god damn what the hell is this !!!!

These people want Oaken fool and PVD you know !

lol actually "schranz" but i only ever heard this word in a pejorative sense up to now...

Sheridan
24th September 2002, 01:50
I thought schranz was coined by chris liebling as it is the kind of techno he plays.

Ruben A
24th September 2002, 06:19
yeah, liebing style... heard that too. But anyway, I hate explaining what kind of music I make/listen too for people who dosn´t know. It´s still a little hard to talk to my parents about this - they think it´s somekind of dancemusic or even house... !! shit.

Then I have to use the word "experimental electronic music" and it´s a very special style - ya know - underground!!

ohhhh...

Then they understand and the subject changes!

lol

I think I would use Brighton techno, as it's the most common term and has been established in Groove oder De:Bug, so even if it may be limiting or hurting an artists' mind to be thrown in that pot, people might at least have an idea what I'm talking about. Sometimes it gets difficult though, as I have been using Detroit techno to describe my style for years (even if it was 50% inadequate :-)) to set myself apart from Trance or Goa (which a lot of people file under "techno"), I keep using that term in order to avoid additional confusions in conversation, as I'm typically not in the company of - say - De:Bug-readers...

talking about music is tough... especially with a layman.

talking about music is like dancing to architecture

... to misquote a legendary phrase.

gunjack
24th September 2002, 07:13
i think it was either iggy pop or frank zappa.

wheezer
24th September 2002, 07:23
@gunjack

actually I did some research on that matter, no one knows for sure although zappa used the original quote it has apparently been proven that he did not come up with it... the origin seems shrouded in mystery...it's a good saying though hehe

gunjack

yeah man, it is a kewl quote...

i call it electronic music for those who don't know anything about it. when i say techno, they think it's trance, dance music and charts/commercial techno. and i won't let the people think that i hear this sound... so i call it electronic music. fit's allround... for people who may know some sounds, i call it brighton techno, because most of my vinyls are from uk... and from germany sometimes...

Tomoki
24th September 2002, 09:00
@wired
You are absolutely right. I have the same perceptions when I say that I’m hearing Techno. Most of the uneducated persons think that I mean this cheap and cheesy trance-shit broadcasted by German music television.

When I say House then they think it’s the House with vocals. They haven’t got a clue about minimal or deep house.

Electronic music is a good term, but when you are strict it means nearly every kind of music nowadays.

Dibu-Z
24th September 2002, 09:19
I have used to say Electronic Music only. Years ago we´ve said No Future- or New Skool Techno.

I dont like to call it Brighton Techno or something like that, because this music style does not depends on a place, a town or a land i think. Mkay, for me the inventors of this freaky stuff are from Brighton fractionally.But...

Lady E
24th September 2002, 10:54
funny that.

its wonky techno but its also brighton techno and glasgow / edinburgh techno.

these places do make things a little easier as a shorthand. but as always its not telling the full story.

when i explain what i do to mainly uncomprehending people i say that i work in electronic, and experimental music.

Ruben A
24th September 2002, 10:58
exactly!!;)

tsr_tomas
24th September 2002, 11:18
now that i read each post i come to the fact that i will call it "electronic music" for those who don´t know much about techno and i´ll say "brigthontechno" to people like you lads and gel´s !

@ruben... yeah, maybe it was me that said it first or was it you.. i´ll not take credit for it anyway =)

myself the first thing that comes to mind, is 'cowbells' , ehich is how i distincted the sound from all others. it was landstrumm's brown by august i think... but all i could hear were cowbells, that sounded awfull if used anywhere else...

I used to call it `NF`or `Real`Techno. Because that is the style of techno wich is full of changes and that makes it real and more interisting in my eyes. Its boring to take all times the same runs and the same sounds.

gunjack
30th September 2002, 05:51
i also think the word "experimental" would be the most applicable when talking about the work of these artists...
