A friend of mine does film soundtracks, and he's asked for recommendations of "stuff like Mogwai and God Speed You! Black Emperor". I have already suggested Dirty Three, Rachel's, Sophia, Windy & Carl, Jackie O Motherfucker... has anyone got any more ideas for atmospheric but noisy stuff like that?

Autolux! Seriously, they're outstanding. Noisey as fuck in the bestest of ways. Just check out some of their loops in the Cinema section of their site autolux.net. Amazing live too. Controlled, androgenous, noise, pop=great.

you want us to post rock recommendations, or to reply to the thread with post-rock recommendations ?

Post rock - what is it anyway? is it what postmen listen to?

Here are my postrock must haves:

Elvis Presley "return to sender"
The marvelettes "please mr. postman"
The marvelettes "twistin postman"
Chuck Berry "johnny b goode" (gonna right a little letter gonna mail it to my local dj)

Personally, I'd define post rock as post dance music rock. Often its instrumental and ultimately takes a tip from the dance/electronic/idm aesthetic regardless of its sound palette. think DFA, !!!, GSYBE, basically it either leans to more of a cerebral experience or its almost like a disco meets 80 reinterpretation. Its a pretty broad term but it encompasses a large variety of contemporary music.

I think he wants more of the atmospheric, strung out stuff - I'm checking out all the above mentioned, and also sending him some Sigur Ros and Xinlisupreme...

Some obvious choices, but missed out so far...

Bark psychosis - hex and codename dustsucker
Main - hydra-calm
The new 'post metal' groups like Isis (taking mogwai a step further), Jesu, Pelican, etc
Techno Animal - re-entry
Moonshake/laika
Scorn - Vae Solis/Colossus/Evanescence
Seefeel/Scala

no idea what is meant with post-rock, but transient waves - sonic narcotic on fat cat some years ago is well atmospheric.

Definitely chekc out Pelt then.. a good one I have is called something like 'empty bell ringing in the sky'. It's like a redneck Bernard Gunter or something, like the background noise from a jackie o record.

hmm,

lambchop - thriller

very short album. the last few tracks are very calm and atmospheric, basically guitar drones.

GSYBE are well wanky and up themselves, and their fans are the biggest dorks on the planet BUT their music is fucking stunning.

I only have two songs actually - Raise Your Skinny Fists Like Antennae To Heaven and another one whose name I can't remember... I love those but I imagine it would get a bit much after more than two 15 minute tracks... I do like some of the A Silver Mount Zion stuff tho.

ive got the record they did 'f#a# infinity'

it has loads of handdrawn bits and pieces on the cover and came with a hammered cent and some other inserts.

i never liked it but i wonder if it's worth any money.

V Knid esq

Well they're the sort of band whose fans are probably a bit obsessive so yeah you'd probably get a fair bit for it.

Fiend 1-3 the Caledonian Trilogy on God Bless Records. It's Brendan O'Hare (Teenage Fanclub/Telstar Ponies/Mogwai/Macrocosmica). Heavy mostly instrumental music with obvious Mogwai comparrisons.

Boing!
