Would you buy a record to support an artist even if you didn't think the tunes were amazing?

you do sometimes, if I think the artist is trying to do something different and being true to themselves. Alot of it grows on me, after a while too.

depends

certain people I'll buy the record without checking if it's good or not, or even if it's bad, because the chances are it'll grow on me.

if I like a tune, I'll try my hardest to buy it, even if sometimes it costs me a bit more than it should.

I buy only for the music. I cant afford not to be picky.

well, as was said before: there's artists that you know they have something going and even if at the first listen it's not hitting you like a bomb you know it will certainly have more to tell you...

but who can really afford that?

it's all up to the individual, innit? i personally buy records because i like them, occasionally as an "investment", and don't understand why someone would buy a record they didn't like, to support an artist (presumably to make another record they won't like). but, different strokes, an all that.

I don't get it... if you don't like their music surely you're not going to want to support them as an artist - unless they're your friend, in which case you can a) buy them dinner or something and b) tell them to pull their socks up and make some good tunes.

I have several times bought tunes by artists I *do* like even if I already have a free copy, mind.

Yes I would/do (sometimes). Sometimes I only buy records to complete my collection, too. And sometimes I hear records the first time and think..oh no, nothing for me. But when I'm listening to it a few times more I often begin to like it, just coz it's something new/different.

Oh hang on I got the wrong end of the stick. Yeah if I really like an artist but don't necessarily get what they're doing with a new release I might buy the record to get to grips with it... not often though, they'd have to be someone i ususally love... and of course it's easier now to download the tracks before you buy if you're not sure about them.

I don't buy music which i don't like, from artists I don't like, too. But it's the only way to like/get into new things, when you try to understand them. A good example is Jamie's last MSQ release, at first hearing I don't really liked it, coz it's something complete different (not to his older releases, but to my music taste), and with time I began to like it just because of this. And sure, it would be stupid to buy records and starting then to like it, but that's the thing about support, I like Jamie's music, his performances, the MSQ-label and I want to help to keep the whole thing up.

And today it's no thing to open soulseek and download the music, but I think this sucks at most. That (okay, with much other things) are the reason for the fuckin hot prices for music and less production of records.

people who love music will never be pleased with (dead) mp3's, so i don't think you can blame slsk for the high prices/less production of rec.

actually, yes. i do it quite often. maybe it's more to support some labels than to support the single artists. often i buy almost everything that come out from certain labels without prelistening. anyway it's a personal thing, i understand being picky about records.

I usually listen before buying but sometimes this is not possible and i have bought stuff on sight by an artist or label i usually like only to find i'm not into it on listening. If the next thing i hear by them is also not doing anything for me then i'll stop buying that artist or label purely on sight. Taste is a constantly changing thing for buyers and producers alike. I won't conciously go out and buy records i'm not into. Probably why i rarely am completist about labels or artists.

I VERY rarely buy music at all anymore. Most of my records these days are ground scores, used bins, or gifts. When I have bought from distributors, I paid because I liked the music, and wanted my friends to have good tunes. If I want to support an artist I pay to see them at the show. That's how they get support, really. Buying their records just supports a label and a record shop. If I want to support them more, I'll buy some merch at the show.

Of course if it's the artist who runs the label, I'd be more up for buying the record, but as I say, I rarely buy music at all. I listen to what people offer up to listen to, or what I hear at a party or friend's place occasionally, and otherwise, I just don't have time to listen to others' stuff. My lady has a fantastic catalog of old Jazz and classical on vinyl, and I'll listen to that occasionally but otherwise, I've got too much of my own projects occupying my attention, you know?
