what a wicked game eh?
but this is not what i was going to say..
why do chess and music share soooo many terms?
attack, anticipation, phase,echo,
play, piece, notation, score, tempo, theme, variation, development, minimal composition, round, major and minor, position, second, retrograde, mirror, composer, com position, transposition the list is blhady endless...
i mean christ, there must be some connection there, dont u think?

I'm sure the same is true of a lot of classical board games, whether you fit the term into the game in it's meaning or it already exists. At a rough guess though I'd say it had something to do with the fact that back in ye olden days chess, like music, was something only limited to a certain part of society, and it was those people that played the games and was part of the musical society. It's no wonder that people would transfer words from one to other if they can view a game as being like a musical performance, and act of skill and talent to produce a powerful result.

Go is a stunning game, it's so much fun to watch people play unlike chess simply as they whole game has this momentus sense of dynamic which haunts the board. You can see all the little moves as over time they start to work into one pattern which suddenly starts to emerge.
Apparantly Go grand masters can tell the whole direction of a game after 7 moves, something which must require unbelievable amounts of skill to do given the fact Go is a N-complete problem.

I love chess but I was never any good at it. granted I didn't really practice a whole lot and I never got any instruction. but it is enjoyable none the less. I have a really nice wooden set my mom got me once. the only problem is I don't know a single person who plays it.

one of my uncle's is a keen chess player - he was teaching me how to play it during the christmas holidays... I'm rubbish @ it really, but I suppose that's something to improve upon over the new year.

Go is a mind-frying game.
You know chess drives people insane... there are so many stories of grand masters just being the maddest most fucked up people... just google Bobby Fischer for the classic mentalo scenario.

Go smokes! I've played it a bit. It's fucking hard to do well. A friend of mine who is quite mental is rather good at it and taught me some. I really should get back into that one. As for chess, it was never meant to be and aristocrat's game. It was a warrior's game for teaching strategy. All of Alexander's officers, and most of his troops were excellent players of chess. It's a large part of why they were able to conquer so much, and over such great distances. Tactics and foresight. Good stuff. Related to music? Inasmuch as action throughout time, requiring coordination and articulation to be effective would be. More so?
