right this may be a long shot, but im desperate for help.

basically my flatmates are complete idiots when it comes to computers and i want to block what they can do with my brand new spanking machine. ive already had a few viruses couse of them.

ive set up their user accounts as limited users but when i log on as them they still have access to the windows folder etc.

all i want is them to have a desktop with internet explorer, kazza, and word plus their my documents folder and nothing else at all and a start menu with only those items.there must be a way to edit the limited user privelages?

ive searched the net for help but nowhere seems to have any clue. and i only have so much time before they torture me into submission for my password.

"help.. ah.. a put the knife away... ahh nooooooo"

theres no hope for you :-)

lock it up behind a fuckoff steel door and make them get their own, or use a unix.

you can't protect a locally booted windows machine from willful users.

I think you can .... up to a point. Xp is based on NT.

Did you build the filesystem with NTFS or Fat32 ?

with ntfs it should definitely be possible, at least in xp professional.

i have xp profesional on a ntfs filesystem. ive tried messing about with the documents and settings folder but the all users folder seems to give them programs i dont want them to have. they are crap enough with computers that if they cant see the programs, they wont use them. i just want a desktop with internet explorer, kazza and a link to their own folder and maybe nothing in the start menu. any help is greatly appreciated. why is this so difficult!

also any help on limiting their diskspace as well?

cheers

OK ... well there is unfortunately no quick way of doing this ...

Sorry I don't have enough time to go into any real detail ... but this should get you going with a few bits to lookup on the net ..

A couple of things you’ll need to find about are ...

1. User profiles ... this will be were you can design what they see on the desktop. Create them either an account each .. or on account

2. If you open up explorer and click on Tools/Folder Options menu and go to the view tab. At the bottom is an option called “Use simple file sharing”… untick this. This will then enable you to set the permissions on the file system.

3. Then when you do properties on any folder you should see a Security tab. This will allow you to set what access other users have to folders and file on your system.

4. Knowing what to permission is the hard part … one thing though never never remove Administrator … or deny that user access to any file or folder …
