Hi
as a starter in elctr.music I 'got' reason ...
but now, almost a year and a half later (is that possible ?) I feel like I've tweaked all I could out of those four boxes ... and actually it's borring the shit out of me ...
My music became very coherent at one point, I developed what friends called 'my style'. but now I just make a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy ... of what I used to do.
So I want a new software package thats gonna fire me up again ...
I'm not out of idea's or inspiration sources but reason is.
any hints ?
it's gotta be cheap or easily obtained ... and running smoothly (wich is always the problem with easily obtained software)

try BUZZ(freeware modular system)
if you demand more efficiency try Reaktor .
(my personal creme de la creme, superstar software! I LOVE IT!)
Morevover there are so many instruments out there.
I think i´ll never buy any hardware synthesizer again, because of its limited conception, which can be derived from the fact that it is hardware.
Compared to hardware a modular system is incredibly more flexible.
i´ve worked with reaktor for 2 years and it is even becoming better and causing more and more fun than at the time i started.
Just check www.native-instruments.com

oops should have mentioned, I'm a mac user ...
so the wonderfull sound of buzz will never reach me ( I've mailed the makers but they say they've lost the source code on a dead disc, only the plugins are still developed. so no mac version ever ... )
thnx anyway

My PC is loaded with software, to make tracks I mostly use all or some of them I wouldn't make any stuff just with 1 prg. "that is boring" and will be for still some time I think, Reason took me a month or so to know it well and it bored me already. Try out to use Reason in rewire mode to a Sequencer that supports it "Cubase for instance!" and everything gets more interesting again... there are many tricks to get rid of the BORING FACTOR in reason.

Well now I think the time has come thanks to NI that I can say now yeah I only need few software these day to get to a point of sound satisfaction It's getting more and more interesting to work with NI apps and I use alot KONTAKT1.5, ABSYNTH2, REAKTOR4, MICRO MODULAR, LIVE3 in CUBASE and alone, + a fine selection of VST/DX plugs I'm really happy with those apps and Micro! and the only thing I see me buying in the future is a better PC... but reason is long time kicked!
even v2,5 sux I think, I thought they would do something about that really bad sound else it would be much more interesting!
But I'm quite sure this isn't gonna bore me so quickly!

If you're looking for a sequencer and don't want to spend any money. Try the free version of ProTools http://www.digidesign.com.
Allows you to do 128 midi tracks (only 8 audio ... but it is free)

I recently got reason 2 and I can get some pretty fucked up sounds out of it with a little knob and slider automation ;) . I don't think much to the granular synth on it though, they should've made something like a DX type synth and/or a purely analogue drum machine.
One thing I do on the sampler a lot is use the sample start point and velocity amount to the start point and use some long samples sequenced by a matrix sequencer with loads of different velocities. (If that makes any sense? :!

I agree that Reaktor is probably the package that you're looking for. It covers FM, sampling and FX and you can do just anything with it. The 3.3 version should fix the performance issues on Mac.
