hi!
i have a prob and i hope some of you can halp me:
i'm searchin for some old electronic music from the 50s or 60s, something made with a different sight then todays electronic music. the problem i have now is i don't have any clue about the peoplenames and the records made in that time.
so my question is what records are worth a listening? and what are so called must-haves then you're interested in that kind of music?
and maybe you can say wath records are available on cd because i don't have the time and the nerves for searching for decades-old rare vinyl.
hope you can help me
for the germans: what about the records alec empire mentioned in the new groove-issue?
ah and one more question(and maybe a special one for emma..): i have just watched an theme-evening(?) on arte about david bowie, and i asked myself
is the new album 'heathen' worth a listening?
i heard it had a good press
thanx for your attention

marcel, i think the best address for this kind of experimental music in germany is a-musik in cologne, they got a whole shop full of that stuff. maybe you get in contact with them, i'm sure they can help you find the records you would like.
heres their homepage. (http://www.a-musik.com/mon/)

if i recall right, there's a documentary called "modulations" that has a small section about music concrete. there's probably 4 or 5 names dropped in there, but i cannot recall any of them. it's a good documentary too.. so watch it!

also check out bruce haack and raymond scott. while they weren't too much part of the musique concrete thing, they were electronic innovators, and they are both equally insane.. in a good way.

and about the last part of the thread... last Bowie`s is great. Worth buying it. I`ve been listening to all his CDs and belive me this is a new pop classic, like it was Ziggy and the others.
Enjoy your time, and dont get lost in musique concrete, it can cause headache after some hours of deep listening...

hi marcel, hi coco
i havent heard heathen, i heard one track from it, and wasnt impressed, but other bowie fans like it actually (as you seem to coco), its supposed to be a return to form
this might be a bit closed minded of me but i just cant believe that and there's too much great music out there for me to listen to. if i got a free copy id give it a listen of course but i wont be rushing out to buy it. let me know what you think when you buy it!

I always thought that "Trutl&Klapaucius" has a similar vibe than old musique concrète-stuff, even if it's done with other means of production and different sounds. But really, there's something in there...

just a question for more shops. does anyone knows some other shops besides a-musik? because i'd like to compare some of the prices, and would like to hear more previews. the previews i found on the net are great, scott's manhattan research inc is fabulous and henry's symphonyrmx is also quite good.
@emma heathen is not bad, i've listened to it.some of the tracks really reminded me a bit of heroes
( i've heard he worked together with the same producer of this time, maybe it's caused by that). not bad
but i haven't bought it, there is to much other good music i discover right now and the days only have 24hours..
cheers marcel

you could try http://www.theserecords.com/NewFiles/mailorderintro.html
This is the most single-mindedly experimental mail order/disributor I know of in the UK. Trouble is, as its in the UK, you're likely to be re-importing stuff which is obviously not going to be efficient and there are no previews.
Get on the emailing list to get updates as they won't do the main catalogue that often. The stock is fairly small but can change quickly.
There is a little shop you can get into by ringing a doorbell. They're quite funny. There are signs up saying things like – “ If you’re just passing the time please go and do it somewhere else” : this is the kind of attitude you develop if you spend years working for pennies supporting the music you love only to be constantly assailed by rich london trendies/pseuds who, having read some embarrassingly written review in a dodgy mag and craving some degree of cool-by-association, will play noisy musical namedropping for half an hour before leaving without making and purchase and returning to their flat where a single Sun Ra CD and a Francois Bayle CD will be displayed in conspicuous positions averaging 0.17 listens per year.
If you actually buy things and seem interested, they are very friendly and helpful.
Good luck

Yes. Ligeti is the shit!!! Nearly everything this man has done is amazing, be it his early electronic experiments from the 50ies, his textural orchestral work from the 60ies or the polyrhythmic stuff he's into since the 80ies. I advise you all to listen to his work.
Considering that Boulez, Stockhausen and Ligeti are all in their 70ies, what will happen when they all die? No post-war avantgarde heros left then!
