how do you get in touch with discogs?
they've got some gabber artist called synthetic anarchist listed as being an alias of cristian's - i submitted an update and a moderator has rejected it.
which is SO ANNOYING.
there's no function to email anyone as far as i can tell.
i bet its another christian vogel.
its only a small thing and very unimportant but i feel all pissed off now.

I'll have a go, mod meself and I know some update mods...

to be fair though they won't let your currently pending update through in any case as you give no justification...

well they let me do it with another one which was jacques gelee, a trance artist they decided was cristian. i just deleted his name from it, that was accepted.
maybe i should resubmit with some notes?

oops what a fuss!
thanks for that.
and sorry to discogs crew for being all annoyed when it is such an invaluable resource.

it's a bit luck of the draw though - if the updating moderator is familiar with cristian vogel they might easily understand but there's people moderating that live in norway and own 400 cd trance singles (hi chsf!) so it's much more prudent to try to put an idiot-proof justification.

I realise it must be a hellish job moderating discogs... but I grit my teeth and sigh everytime I have to submit/change anything :)

The only problem on there is that people try and moderate stuff they don't even know about, that's why I only do techno submissions.

i was once a mod but they wouldnt accept alot of my submissions, i got bored of it and they took my mod status away from me.
i once had an online fued with the other mods, it was the fact they wouldnt let me submit the instrumental dub version of ghostbusters... grrrrrr

non-techno releases have been hard, but imho it has gotten better over the course of this year, probably due to the influx of people with non-techno releases, I mean I don't even see these sorts of "how could we let xyz into the database" threads that used to be all the rage a while back.
it's not hellish though steev, you work at your own pace and there are no standardized guidelines so if you're able to tell others to fuck off you'll be fine ;)

I never have problems submitting stuff. Added 119 releases so far, not all of them electronic (Björk - "Medúlla", for example).
Using the field for Moderator notes can be very useful in justifying your submissions, updates etc to the mods. Quite proud of that, it was my idea to add that feature to the update form.

on a similarish note, anyone know how you can get Amazon to update/correct their listings? our label sampler compilation is on their listings with a mispelled title, no cover image and no tracklising... it was quite a surprise to see them listing the CD but it would be nice to get the info right.

I've submitted about twice that, and nowadays people leave me alone pretty much all of the time (recently added some Curtis Mayfield and Ennio Morricone stuff), but the first half year was hell.

With reference to the initial post - I've had to remove "other members" from one of my aliases twice. Apparently I have worked with some guy called Markus Intalex or something similar. Erm....no I haven't.

yeah it's just the non-database sections of the forum that are planned to close, the database itself will remain fully active.

Its weird because they have Mark Williams listed as being a member of 'A homeboy, A hippie and a funky dread'
He's quite annoyed over that one.

As it goes, if you look at Mark Williams' biography you will see he is classed as a memeber of HHFD.

after a concerted campaign to get jacques gelee removed from cristian's profile (i mentioned above that i just deleted it and that seemed to get through, which was not the case as it turned out), i notice today that some one has submitted a correction to reinstate the gelee!
AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!
i have contacted them to ask them to stop the madness.
cris has done some production work on a band called panico on tigersushi which has been released this week and i toyed with the idea of adding it but i fell at an early hurdle. no stamina.

They really could do with letting artists take ownership of their own pages and/or tightening down on who does and doesn't moderate pages - because it seems they've got some prize morons who they seem to respect over and above a lonely voice saying - 'hello, I'm actually this artist and you're fucking my image and reputation up'.
Typically if they do have mods posting in particular music genres they need to make them stick to them, unless they show a broad knowledge of music - and no trance isn't teh same as techno - inspite of how the local 2nd hand record shop may have their records organised...

I hope adam x gets the sonic groove record database back on-line some time in the future. their database stomps on discogs in everyway. but mainly their accuracy.

The problem with the moderation system is there isn't enough moderators to do the job really. I used to be a mod there and tried to blaze through a hundred releases per day then one day woke up to find that I was no longer a mod which really says whats wrong, stomping on the mods who are just trying to get along when the DB is already far behind.

darn tootin'. i used to be a member about 3 or 4 years ago (my profile may or may not still exist somewhere, but i forgot my password anyway and don't have the same email address) and signed up again recently, after this very thread reminded me about it. it was definitely a lot easier to submit stuff back in the day than it is now. it's been a profoundly disheartening experience. i shan't be bothering again

Good idea, as soon as we've solved how to verify a certain individual actually being who he/she claims to be via the Internet and as soon as that technology is completely free, I'm sure it'll be implemtented in discogs.
Funny how on the one hand everybody's complaining about artist/label pages contain incorrect infos and at the same time complaining about how painstaking/time-consuming the moderation process has become.
I have releases I submit pending for months all the time, but I understand that a lot of the stuff I listen to is so weird, that there might only be a few mods, if any at all, that know the release.
This is a chicken/egg thing, if you prove yourself to be knowledgeable in some specialized area (e.g. by submitting a lot) which is understaffed (and basically every area is), you will become a mod sooner or later, and if you continue to do a good job modding stuff you actually know about, you will probably end up making a difference in the music genres you work in.
A lot of this type of nagging just gets on my nerves - if you plan not to participate in this kind of an open system, learn the rules of conduct in a massive network like this one, then shut up and stay out, or do your own.
You'll be surprised how hard it is to develop a user-moderated open database that can scale to handle pretty much any music genre available...

I beg to disagree with this, perhaps within the specific musical genres Adam & Frankie are really good at, i.e. industrial/techno/hiphop...

As for the Gelee, it is currently not linked to Cris, but somebody is trying to link them (again).

You can see who is trying to do this, (user dmax) and you can click on his name to get to his user profile via which you can contact the man directly via email and ask him to cancel his submission.

well that was more of what I was refering to. I know discogs houses a lot of various styles of music, but I only use it for info on techno releases. the SG database was geared more toward techno. in that regard I still feel that the sonic groove guys had it down. they were building that database since the early 90's and amassed a great collection of records that were tied together very nicely with the links to artists/labels, etc.
wheezer
12th March 2005, 12:54
well imho where discogs really comes into its own is the whole user profile bit, with advanced you can really manage your own record collection well, put to-buy items on your wantlist, contact users about trading releases, etc...
of course this functionality could be added to the sg database, but I'd still be lacking a good 50% of my collection I suppose...
