mike patton is overrated. he always tries to be weird and what not, but in the end he fails somehow, it just turns out to be...hmm, it's hard to explain if english isn't one's native language. anyway, all his projects leave me with the feeling that his weirdness is not kind of natural, like e.g. yamatsuka eye's or captain beefheart's weirdness was, it always feels like the product of a deliberate labour aimed at gaining some extra coolness factor besides having been the singer of a defunct stadion rock band (you know who I mean). so now he's sneaking around looking for cool musicians and bands who lend him their own, original creativity...first it was mr. bungle (ok, that was really he's thing), then it was buzz osborne and dave lombardo (fantomas), then it was dillinger escape plan, now it's tomahawk...I suggest you all really check out dillinger escape plan without him, they just fucking rip.
and there is another thing: mike patton is a virtuoso and has never ever rejected his own virtuosity...if he screams around, then for him it's just a vocal technique amongst others which he has in command, if e.g. yamatsuka eye screams, it's something different, because eye always stated that he can't actually sing...so the kind of screaming and vocalizing he does is his very own and personal way of expression, that's also why it feels more from the heart. but mike patton can do everything if he wants to, like fucking frank zappa, and that makes his music a bit trivial, cause it's so exchangeable.

I think the fact that patton can do so many things like zappa makes him more important. mike patton is the hardest working man in rock and actually almost all of music. that guy just gets with great musicians and makes great music. and he constantly tours. he will go up the east coast of the states with one band, then go right back down with a different one that he picks up with in some city. all of the music mike is/has been involved in has been very much different and similar. because mike has his own sound which I think everyone can admire. no one sounds like mike or does what he does. he certainly isnt for everyone but he has done some great work, some of which you may not even know about. the bands listed so far are just a couple of the bands he is in. he works with close to 10 different projects. oh and I heard an interview with fantomas on the radio and had a brief introduction to him personally and yes! he really is that wierd.

As if working hard alone is the guaranty for good art....Who gives a damn if he tours a lot or is involved in 10 different projects at the same time? As for the originality of his music...hmmm, I don't know, I didn't have the impression he's so highly original. One instantly recognizes his voice, that's true.

Hmm. Patton's projects usually seem to appeal more to musicians than non-musicians. The Zappa comparison is an interesting one - in many ways both of these guys are close to being politicians for freaks. If they weren't around there are a lot of raw underground talents that would never have got the exposure they've had... without Zappa there'd be no Beefheart; without Patton there'd be no Kid 606 / LSR etc.
I just heard Fantomas vs The Melvins and it's fucking great. Patton doesn't really sing that much on it, mind.

i liked dillinger escape plan anyway before the patton ep. however although for me personally, i like mr bungle, tomahawk, etc they are things that could be there or not, im not too fussed. however the fantomas first album is fecking amazing. the way everything is cut up, tweaked and produced is similar to the way a good electronica record is produced rather than a band. thats why i dont like the fantomas mr bungle album (well compared too anyway) it takes the edge off the brilliance of the studio version. and as far as im aware patton did most of the 'production' himself and someone else mastered it. there are early demos patton did flying about that are the same but without the sheen of the finished version.
listening to fantomas was for me like listening to beefheart for the first time again. the more you listen the more its brilliance becomes apparent.

Mike Patton Is fuckin dope, he is not trying to be weird, I don't think the guy ever tried to do anything to make him self out to be cool or unique, he just is. The guy never sold out, he keeps doing whatever the fuck he wants to do, and that freedom is what makes him the fuckin man. To say that he can't sing is freakin the most absurd thing I have ever ever ever heard. He has a fantastik voice man, what are you talking about. You know why he has all these great musicains hooking up with him, and why he has all these different bands???????? Cause he is the fucking man ! And they know it, he is not knocking around backstage begging these guys to team up with him, they know he is the man.
>>> Don't look at me I'm ugly in the morning ......That shit was off the hook bro...........Let the hate go bro.. its clouding your judgement

Did I ever say the man can't sing? I suggest you read my replies properly. I said he is a virtuoso, and I said Yamatsuka Eye can't sing! And I stay with it...most of what he does sucks, except maybe Fantomas' first record. I can't stand Mr. Bungle, the Tomahawk-tracks I've heard were a letdown, the DEP-ep I have only heard in live versions, and the older songs were definitely better. Also I never said Patton sold out, I couldn't care less about that. Could well be that his more obscure stuff is quite reasonable, I don't know. Yes, he has the Ipecac-label, and his bringing out good bands like the Melvins or Kid606 or Melt Banana, so at best he's a kind of good impresario, all respect to that. But this Patton-worshipping that goes on in some underground circles really gets on my nerves!

All music is not for all people, I may really like something that you think is shit, and vice versa. But I just got the feeling that you were pretty hard on a artist that is keeping some sort of relevance in a genre of music that is just raped by a ton of crappy teen Wanabee pop-punk bands, cheesy hardcore death rock wannabe slayer suckers, and non talented panzy bitch ass metal heads that fucking suck. I mean 99% of the shit out there really blows. Rock may not be dead but its on life support and has been in a coma for while now.

it takes diff'erent strokes to move the world, mmmm.
I see where you are coming from zombie, but you must remember that there is worshipping of all artists and creators to some degree. could you not say that some of the members here worship cristian? slipknot has their worshippers as does jeff mills and dr. dre. in the end it is all the same. it's just that some people have more of a following than others.
me personally, I like to stalk my favorite celebrities.lol

I never said there's something wrong with worshipping in general. I said there's something wrong with worshipping Patton. Ok, I've said what I have to say on this subject, and I won't argue any more.

i really hate the hero worship of artists, as if they can do no wrong, so i understand what zombie's saying.
there's alot to be said for remembering that artists are people, albeit talented ones...
but its hard to remember that and im terrible because i melt into a puddle of uselessness when confronted with the artists i admire. in fact i tend to just remove myself from the situation rather than become a total tit.

speaking of patton, I thought that lovage album had some good moments on it......I've been into the white stripes for a while now, she does belt the living crap outta those drums, I just like them because they purely and simply just rock out......don't really think much of the vines at the moment, every time I pick up some aussie music publication it says 'eveyone in the UK says the vines are great' all the time, as if that should make our minds up for us which kind of pisses me off, but 'get free' is a bloody terrible song IMO
