View Full Version : another one of those movie threads

as mux already mentioned there is a nice moviethread missing...
hm...latest movies i´ve seen and recommend were
the man who wasn´t there and amores perros.
"the man....." is a nice coen-brothers movie again. a lil bit long but
interessting. i think the coens made better movies before but its enjoyable (reminded me of a very old coen-movie...some one of their first, a dark thriller called blood simple...)
amores perros is a spanish movie. the filmmaking is modern in tradition of snatch, requiem for a dream and that likes but has a nice story...watch it :)
not recommendable was avalon (some compared it to the matrix...)
it´s from the guy who made ghost in the shell but this film is his worst i guess. even existence is better.
sexy beast was boring stuff...ghandi plays an asshole...only the first 20min. where enjoyable for me...
the only movie i´m looking forward at the moment to get my hands on is
waking life (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0243017)

the decription for waking life sort of reminded me of an older movie that I love but haven't seen in a while "dream with the fishes". great flick, has anyone else seen it?
also I quite liked sexy beast. I think it holds the record for most use of the word 'cunt'.

Sexy Beast was brill in a really intense, get out of my face sort of way....... and the soundtrack was great (James Lavelle I think).....

the performance of kingsley was ok but the story lacked something.
i think everybody waited till he killed somebody or got killed by somebody. the killing scene was cool but that was the movie and that was not enough for me or i was just not in the mood for that sort of movie.

To be honest I was expecting another Brit gangster flick a la Snatch, Lock Stock etc which bore me silly nowadays but I found the film had tenseness, a bit of humour and good characters.

I recently got Requiem For A Dream on DVD. One of the most powerful and compelling films I've ever seen. Draws you in, makes you feel for the characters, even though you know it's only themselves that are fucking them up, you still feel sorry for them. I kind of want to read the book, but if it's just like a film, there seems little point.
The soundtrack for RFAD is really good, too. Does anyone know if Clint Mansell's other work is in a similar vein to that, or indeed if it's any good.

last cool movie i saw was mulholland drive....i think there was allready a thread about, or ?
anyone watched "the killerhand" ?? don't know if this is the correct title but in german it is "die killerhand".
it is a comedy a bit cheesy but made me laugh a lot when i watched for the first time.
i am totally looking forward to "lord of the rings" part 2.

do anyone of you know when the new quentin movie "kill bill" will be showed in the cinemas, or is it running allready ??

I saw Mulholland Drive for the first time recently, since I missed it at the cinema. I wasn't really sure about it at first. Could obviously tell that the first half was a pilot for a tv series. There were some things that didn't seem to really go anywhere. I knew it was good, but it didn't blow me away as much as it should have.
Until some time later, when I thought about it after. It kept bugging me, things in the back of my head, so 2 days later I went and rented it again. I loved it totally the second time, noticed a lot of stuff I hadn't before, and the first half and last half didn't seem so much disperate. Seemed to make sense in the Lynchian way. I can now say that it's probably my favourite Lynch film.

Good films seen recently
24 Hour Party People- Very good, suggest for anyone interested in the music and time period. Would be interested to hear other perspectives of Manchester by people that were there to experiance it, I wonder how they feel about the representation.
Alot of Akira Kurosawa including
The Hidden Fortress
Yojimbo
Sanjiro
Seven Samurai
His stuff is awsome dont know what else to say.
Finaly saw Agira-Wrath of God by Herzog-another awsome film and filmaker.
Goldmember-just as funny as the rest of the Austin Powers films.
El Topo

kurosawa´s dreams was very nice to watch. a lil bit hard to understand sometimes cause of different cultures...
seven samurai is great. wasn´t lucas influenced by that movie for his star wars triology?
btw. requiem for a dream has a real
juicy website (http://www.requiemforadream.com/)

the man who wasn't there was the only new international movie besides mulholland drive that I even bothered to watch (there was also a third one called "la pianiste", but I doubt anyone outside europe is going to see it; ok, and don't forget episode II), and opposed to deccard I think it was a very good movie, and I would rate it much higher than the unsubtle big lebowski. it's a tragedy, a really bitter movie, so if there's anything to laugh about, the audience will choke on its laughter. this film is not dealing with the obvious, it's rather quiet and introvert, and the Coen brothers have proved that they can do this sort of thing as well, so that's why I loved it so much.
Oh, and besides that, I think blood simple was a great film as well.
Sheridan

the hidden fortress is the movie that lucas stole all of his ideas for star wars.
just saw an interesting movie the other day. it is called dead man and starts johnny depp. I know what some maybe saying but he does a really good job playing this guy william blake, who gets a job offer out west (mind you this is a wild wild west story). but the job was filled, so he is stuck there and through some events he ends up killing a man and he runs. there are hired bounty hunters that are trying to find him and all the while blake has met a rogue american indian who helps him out. I dont want to give too much away but it is beautifully shot, filmed in black and white, with neil young doing the soundtrack. highly recommended.

yes, i agree with you dead man is a good movie...i also would recommend it )if you like a bit of a western(....

The only coen brothers film I've seen is O Brother Where Art Thou?
Which I thought was great.

El Topo is so fucking bizarre. wasn't that by the same guy who did Sante Sangre?
have also seen Aguirre-Wrath of God and thought the soundtrack was just beautiful.
recently i saw Storytelling (new Todd Solondz film) and Goldmember (cheap corny fun but was it really worth the 8.25 to see it?)
zombie ritual

Dead Man is a Jim Jarmush-film, so it simply cannot be crap. But even compared to Jim Jarmush standard, it was a good movie.

@zombie ritual: don´t get me wrong. i liked the movie. i´m just a notorious criticizer :D
blood simple was nice but i couldn´t really enjoy it cause the person i watched the movie with together was like "why are you renting always such strange movies...." :)
dead man was really good. i think one of depp´s best rolls.
if anyone is in anime i really would recommend serial experiments lain. it´s a very quiet but intelligent series.

oh yes coen brothers, every of their films is so innovative but so entertaining - they're just cool. aren't they about to do a silent movie next?
re:anime: is anyone familiar with urotsukidoji? i think there are several episodes, didn't see all of them but what i saw was pretty far out concerning violence- and sex-visions. sick!
but the sickest films i ever ever saw were two parts of the guineapig -series. japanese splatter for strong stomachs.
deccard
11th September 2002, 13:34
@amble: urotsukidotji has 3 parts. the first two are about 90 min and the last is split into 3 or 4 episodes. the first two are funny cause the movie doesn´t live only from their ultraviolence. btw. the german d&b precision crew seems to be highly influenced by that movie cause they use a lot of names of it as pseudonyms....
has anyone seen the japanese movie visitor q? its about a fucked japanese family. is it worth a rent?

zombie: Agreed about The Man Who Wasn't There- Great movie- Though, I found it difficult to put above or below Lebowski (which is one of my favourites)- It is simply a different type of movie altogether... The Coen brothers always impress- cause they evolve so much- They manage to remain great storytellers- but they don't get stuck in any sort of box (re: same methods from movie to movie)- They have enough faith in their regular actors, to include them in multiple projects- knowing that they will be able to pull off new characters that do not mirror previous ones. The cinematography in all of their works, is just as impressive as the soundscore- as the humor... I even got into bluegrass after Oh Brother...
"Damn... we're in a tight spot"...
I recommend 24-hour party people- Crazy times... Sad times- told from a nice non-cheese/non-typical perspective...
Has anyone seen Afterlife (a Japanese piece)- Very beautiful...

What are all those Japanese manga films like then ? I always see them advertised on telly/vid whatever but never get around to watching them ...

@loz
hmm you've been missing out then! Fargo & Big Lebowski for example are a) quite funny and b) good satires on "the american way of life"... did anybody else notice that in the big lebowski, there was not a single person with a "english" (for lack of a better word) family name?
they seem to be the only peeps next to lynch & burton that get away with somewhat "different" hollywood funded movie productions.
and while I'm on the topic of tim burton - did anybody else here dig ed wood as much as I did?

Ya both Hidden Fortress and Seven Samari have influenced many hollywood movies.
Just saw Van Wilder, has funny parts over all not that good, but worth watching if you want to giggle a few times
Also saw Ratcatcher-ahhh dont know, alot of cliches happening in this boy coming of age story.

I like getting a bunch of people together, taking some acid (not loads, just enough to trip, rather than hallucinate) and watching Akira...
I think it makes a lot easier, particular for people bought up in a western culture to understand, and it saves them having to suffer my crackpot theories :-)

I loved Ed Wood, great film. But a lot of Burton's films are simply poor standard. Sleepy Hollow was lacking something, and Planet of the Apes.. well, I needn't say more.

love that flick.

@aleks: i can´t really spare the cult of scarface...dunno maybe watched it ten years too late. it is so 80ies influenced it was almost funny.
the last ten minutes made the movie so famous i guess.
blood-the last vampire was amusing cause i really can´t understand how people with the ability to make such cool animations are willing to make a movie of such a stupid story...
jin roh (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0193253)
is a recommendable anime. the calm style with some actionsequences inbetween reminded me of patlabor 2.
and almost a must see of course
mononoke hime (princess mononoke or princess monolake) (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0119698)
which is really a great movie and enjoyable not only for animefreaks!
(great to watch with your girlfriend :) cause of the lovestory)

Yesterday I saw the movie "Bowling for Columbine", it´s about the weapon scene in the States and why there are so many murders because of that.
When you open a bank account you get a gun in the state of Michigan.
Bullets are available in Kmarts and so on.
Very, very interesting documentation...

yeah the bit where they get kicked out by charlton heston is fantastic. funny film with serious core.
i recently saw a very good manga-adaption named "fudoh". one of the few films from that section that also give you a tempting story besides the style. real filming, no animation. and plenty of blood.
phaedrus
30th December 2002, 18:44
In regards to Bowling for Columbine, it did have some interesting points, although after an hour, I pretty much got the idea. Michael Moore also tends to be a sensationalist from time to time as he grabs "evidence" from every angle he can get without bothering to make a coherent statement.
@amble
if you liked fudoh, then you should definitely check out "the audition" by the same director. It's a psychological thriller, that starts out slow, almost boring to a point, but ends out completely horrifying. I was actually shocked after seeing it, and I hadn't been shocked by a movie for a long time.
deccard
30th December 2002, 19:28
damn i still didn´t see bowling for columbine. i tried once and the cinema was sold out and i had to watch the pornograph but beside 2 sexscences it was a boring father-son story.
has anyone seen atarnajuat? 3 hours of eskimo-drama. could have been a lil bit shorter but somehow liked it.
i saw some days ago lord of the rings part one the first time and i must say part two is way better. this stupid lovestory is so superflous. all in all a lil bit too much hollywood for me.
a cool movie i saw lately was happiness. funny and fucking cynical.
but what the hell is fudoh?
phaedrus

Fudoh is a really fucked up Japanese gangster movie. The goreyness level is comparable to that of a twisted manga.
