Further to Pong's post, whatever happened to biodiesel in the UK? For a while it was all over the news, treated as a bit of a joke story (it started with the Welsh police noticing that cars smelled like chipshops or something), then it vanished again. Why hasn't this taken off? Surely there's a catch...

If you takeused veggie oil from a fryer, and clean it up a bit, then add methanol, or ethanol, you can run it in your diesel with no hassles. So much for needing petroleum. The first diesel engines were in fact designed to run on vegetable oil, then dumbed down to run on a lower distillate of petroleum.
