View Full Version : irregular metronome in max/msp
hey everybody...
i'm trying to build a sequencer in max /msp. i'm using a metronome that counts from 0 to 15 at the desired bpm. i'm then using this to read column values (getcolumn $1)from a matrix control that represents the sequence. the problem is that the metronome/count is irregullar and jumpy. how can i make a metronome that gives a stable clock output?
cheers matt
although i don't use max msp myself, i'm still looking for some answers for a mate, questions already asked on the old board - is there a place to download readymade modules or macros or something, so for example he doesn't need to build his own stepsequencer completely, just a simple one to start off ? he tried but ended up with a sequence that was not unstable but double-triggering the notes...
hmm but now i think - if there was a macro resource you wouldn't be asking this here... :! we could need some max msp veterans here...

Firstly, check that you have put the max schedular into overdrive - go to dsp status from the menus. This will put audio and midi events above screen drawing in order of priority. Secondly, have you got max running as fast as she can - reduce the vector size and, darn it, the one next to it, which refer to internal timings - smaller is better.
did this help?

thanks for the advice;
i tried reducing the vector sizes & overdriving, and no, it did not make a difference. i think there is something intrnsically wrong with using these objects to perform this task. ah well... back to the drawing board (or at least the file-> new menu.)
in reply to c s, cycling 74 has a list of links to people who have put up patches etc. i've scanned through it a bit and found a couple of step sequencers, one by monolake (fiendishly complicated) and another one that looks easier, although i haven't really tried to use it yet. the easier one is at www.hons.at
i think max/msp is a bit hardcore for me, i'm going to try reaktor instead....
