why do you think us as humans are so violent? I don't mean just us commiting violent acts like war or fights, etc. but even normally peacefull people being engrossed by violent images. watching two people beat the shit out of each other. watching a football player get his leg broken. watching violent movies. what is it that drives us to want to wittness these things?

pretty simple really: evolution. not much point in trying to evade a sabre-tooth tiger attack with a winning personality

that is a valid point. but I am talking on a much broader scale. you know the whole slow down at the auto accident mentallity. you know it will be bloody and violent yet you can't turn away.

One of the reasons people may become ingrossed in violent images, films like Fight Club or games like Grand Theft Auto is because it lets us express a side of ourselves which we aren't supposed to give in to. It lets us channel it away safely so we have less of a tendancy to blow up.
Part of it is jaelously as well, who doesn't find some super sporting hero (like Beckham) getting a swift kick to the knackers to bring him down a peg or two?

@ gare
guess I've lost that one...LOL

Of course you can. Knowbody I know is barred from studying some sort of fighting art if they want to. If you want to get it out of your system, it's ok to do so with others willing to do so as well. I think it's something else, probably something more like a need to feed the appetite of the beast that lives in our lizard brains, deep beneath conscious thought, something that motivates survival and sends the psyche endorfins, encouraging our wills to live. It is a dark side that as others have said, has not yet been bred out of us, nor should it be as we haven't reached a point in our physical evolution for such to be totally unnecessary yet. Hope it comes along soon though. This is nothin to be proud of in the face of other intelligences.

The violent impulse is with us forever whether we like it not - it can be tempered but not vanquished - let's face it, we wouldn't be here today without a lot of violence - whether through subjugating other people, or merely through our destructive impulse to destroy and rebuild things constantly.
Bollocks that made sense when it was in my head but looks like shite on the screen.
