i have no experience with external ones but i doom hp and especially philips for the endless problems i had with their internal writers. teac was my 1st reliable one, then i got a cheaper faster one from taiwan-based liteon - and it works better, for longer than hp or philips did.
btw toshiba cd/dvdrom-drives rule - it's a shame they don't build writers as well.

i dunno what external writer for you to get...i have had problems with all of mine!! (iomega and sony) but i highly recommend not getting a usb one (if you can), it just isnt' a stable or powerful connection. scsi or firewire are much much better...
