americans! leaders of everything fad have been having another upswing of fad diets this past year or so. the atkins diet, the south beach diet, low/no carb diet. it is really sickening and is making people unhealthy. do these kinds of fad diets exist in the european coutries? or is this maddness only isolated here in the states?

Atkins diet passed through here about a year ago among my aunts and many of the local middle age women. It didn't work, unsuprisingly and makes people smell like dogs :)

Now it's back to weight_watchers for them. I try to convince them to go to the gym thrice a week and to stop cooking seperate dinners for everyone, to make some free time for it. My aunt cooks upto 5 different dinners a day, and picks at each of them!

why can't people just buy themselves a feckin bicycle and stop eating hundreds of cakes?

Over in the land of the fat bastards everything is cheap and made cheaper by a staggering presentation of "special offers" including super sizes, buy one get one free and all your fat ass can eat buffets. This leads to a downward spiral, they eat more because they can eat more for relatively no extra cost, get unfit and by the time they think about cutting back they are unfit unhealthy bastards who can't be arsed.

The other problem is once you start eating a lot, you continue to eat a lot. It's actually really hard to cut back on your food intake. My old flatmate was a hulking fat bastard, one of the nicest guys I've ever known and he used to eat portions that were about the size of two normal portions or one small child. He was concerned about his weight but he never once cut down on the size of his portions even though I told him he should drink lots of water to fill up his stomach so it didn't feel empty until his stomach could shrink. He never did any excercise either, he used to complain it hurt his feet when I suggested he make the 30 minute from work each day during the summer.

Anyway in the end I think it's because people hate changing their ways and can't be bothered taking a step in the right direction as they are stuck where they are (quite litterly in the case of some fat bastards, specificaly that women who never moved from her chair for several years and when she had to go to hospital they found that the chair had actually grafted itself onto her so the chair had to go to hospital to be surgically removed)

aye you're right mirsha. the thought of making changes is so much worse than the reality that it stops most people from doing anything. so, they look for a 'quick fix', an 'easy option'. ironic really, as making bizarre alterations to your diet is a lot more hassle than riding a bike, which is actually quite good fun most of the time.

I agree, It really isn't hard to ride your bike for at least 30 minutes a day.

Don't forget what the the two suppoed best forms of excercise are. Swimming which a tubby person isn't going to consider because if they are thinking about changing their habbits they are obviously self concious and causing waves in their local swimming pool will be a right turn off for them.

Sex is supposed to be wonderfull excercise as well but who's going to want someone who's so fat their mind is constantly filled with this urge to flee and save themselves before they are crushed under rolling mounds of flesh in some horrific auto erotic asphyxiation accident?

when i worked in a health food shop we sold atkins stuff and once a pregnant women came in and bought loads and was asking about it... i was outraged.

your body produces some of the same chemicals/enzymes you produce if you starve yourself, it's like your body is either in denial or blind to what you are eating because of cutting out carbohydrates which is an important part of your diet.

their shits must stink

nah all that metabolism stuff about atkins is complete pseudoscientific quackery tosh

the real reason it works is simply that protein makes you feel full, so you eat less.

my girlfriend loves to diet
even if she doesn't need to
(at least i think she doesn't)

love to diet
hate to exercise.

that the real reason diets fail,
i reckon most diets would work a little if people combined it with a little sweat.
problem is that most diets market themselves in such a way that most folks feel that exercise is unnecessary. mcdonalds isn't the reason americans are fat-asses, lack of exercise is.
