Nightmare on Elm Street when I was 10 was quite scary, I haven't seen it in so long now I really can't remember what about it scared me the most, other than being ripped to shreds by an undead dicing machine.

Salems Lot - the vampire used to scare me as a youngsta. The old woman out of the shining was another.
Jacobs Ladder used to freak me out - especially the people with the super fast shaky heads.

there's this one zombie movie where the chick is running from the zombies and gets into a running car, the driver is real friendly and helpful at first but then he turns into a zombie as well, the girl screams and some dude jumps out from out his grave and starts laughing. then the movie ends.
freaked me out when I was a kid.

The Haunting is the scariest film I've ever seen by a long way. Good to see the Japs being influenced by this kind of horror film instead of the usual Hollywood slasher type movie. Films that creep you out instead of shocking you with rivers of gore are far more effective IMO.

The Haunting is well scary, today's young whippersnappers could learn a lot from that film. Like: don't telegraph your scary moments with loads of generic 'spooky' soundtrack.

<--- another person freaked-out by Ring...
the scene in candyman where the main girl (forgot her name) is in the doctors office, and calls out "candyman" 3 times... nothing happens, and then he appears & rips the doc to shreads...
the 1st time the 'twins' appear in the shining, and whenever the little boy rides down those corridors on his bike bugs me out everytime

my scariest movie scene when i was wee:
the bit in terminator when reece and connor think the terminator has been taken out in the lorry crash and he reappears in robot form. that's a real "look behind you!" moment. i've always found stop-frame really sinister for some reason.
i was freaked by ringu as well. but more in a way that made me really curious about the background and mythology of the film (its really open ended, after all). i ended up doing loads of reading about the films and the original novels and the depths of movie-geekdom to which this film caused me to sink is probably scarier than the film itself.

there are trailers on tv now for a new film called "the grudge" thats a remake of a japanese horror film called "Ju-On". not sure if thats "the eye" in europe, or another horror film i've not heard of before, but they have highered the original japanese writer and director to make the remake. wish they had done that with "the ring".

ju-on is a completely different film to the eye, and the eye's korean anyway. i want to see a tale of two sisters, another korean number. korea's where it's at.

Would have to agree, after seeing Ringu I have become mad about asian films, the Prequel and the 2 sequels to Ringu just dont live up to the original, (I have never seen the American version, I think it would ruin it for me if I did). The Eye and Eye 2 were good without stealing the same freaky concepts from Ringu like Ju on and others do, Uzamaki was good too, not at all scary just odd. If you like these kind of films then you must check A Tale Of 2 sisters, a fairly recent Korean film which is really quite creepy, well done and very thought provoking.
I dont really get spooked or sickened by films as much as I try to push my boundaries with gore. I would say one best films I have seen lately is a Spanish film called In A Glass Cage, its not horror but has kind of sick subject matters. The scariest thing I have ever seen was a Donald Duck cartoon (the fill in bit at the cinema) which I saw on acid many moons ago, it did my head in so much I didnt stay for the film! :)

hmmm, wierd coincidence. i didn't mention this before 'coz it's not from a movie but i got so freaked out when i was young by this donald duck cartoon where he gets zapped by a light-bulb and gets the power of electricity and his face goes all demonic and evil with pointy teeth and stuff and he starts chanting "power. powwwer". scared the crap out of me. if it's the same one that you saw Me? then i'm giving up and going home.

No the one I saw was were he was making an aeroplane by the instructions he is given on the radio, anyway he takes his finished plane for a fly and then the voice comes over the radio saying 'you must not take it out in the rain' then obvoiusly a black cloud goes over poor old Donald and it starts raining, his plane starts melting and he is on the wings rolling them out with a rolling pin and really freaking out. Yes I know it sounds silly but it really did my head in, I can still see that plane melting today when I think about it!

I love his films, Visitor Q is my favourite so far but Audtion was good too, as was Gozu. I saw Zebraman the other night and that was brilliant, the piss take of Sadako and the well from Ringu was hilarious! I have been meaning to get round to One Missed Call but havnt had chance yet. I am not so into the Yakuza ones though, although saying that I havnt seen many of his Yakuza films.

Its not surprising he shot visitor Q in a week, hes done so many films I dont know where he gets the time! That Lady had a lot of lactating to do in 1 week!

The Exorcist is weird - first time I saw it I was 17 and it was quite scary but only for the shocks rather than the atmosphere.
The second time I saw it was a hoot and I couldn't understand why I'd ever found it scary.
I think you have to have had a religious upbringing to find Exorcist rally scary.
May Kasahara
5th October 2004, 16:45
I dunno about that Orang - I find it very scary and my upbringing was completely non-religious (unless you count hardcore 80s feminism). The second time I saw it at the cinema, it was the director's cut with the spiderwalk restored - even though I knew it was coming, it still frightened the hell out of me in a really physical way, like a hard punch in the chest. My best friend, sitting next to me, had no idea it was coming - she jumped about a foot off her seat. Ha ha ha, that was bad of me!
