I user to watch it a bit but I've found that most of the last season wasn't very lollerific, it was just a series of cheap shock tactics that may work against the moral majority in America that would be outraged about something lie having your wig whipped off whilst giving head.
Lady E
22nd September 2004, 09:25
knid how many did you ACTUALLY watch?
On the contrary to your rant, its very witty, well written, and at times quite moving. ALL my girlfriends think so. We are talking highly intelligent politically aware people here, not vapid idiots. they like the clothes and the aspirational setting to ogle but the situations are translatable into real life. the sexuality is actually quite liberating for us ladies, women all love their best friends so we like that angle AND it can be very very funny.
most of us dont hold with the romantic ideal of 'the one' so with that we just suspend disbelief and enjoy the real love story which is between the four women.
SJP does look like a horse though.

Well I haven't seen that many, but I've sat through a couple of episodes and not raised any laughs... I'm guessing from what you said that you need to get to know the characters or something, but I just found them yecchy. Maybe I'm just jealous of their classy wardrobes.

22nd September 2004, 10:01
I don't consider their wardrobe, dialogue, or anything else on that show to possess any class at all, nor can I believe that the show is liberating in any particular way.
It reminds me of some american diplomat kids I knew, they liked to spend their time at parties discussing who has the best maid and whose house had the most marble.
I think Mirsha is right on the money with the cheap shock tactic idea, it's all about packing a maximum amount of sexual expletives or situations related to sexuality into the otherwise empty shell of a show.

its really aimed at and about women so im more interested in women's views on the show to be honest wheezer / mirsha / knid.
women portrayed as sexual beings in control of and enjoying, and actively pursuing their sexuality instead of being passive (99% of tv / film cultural output) or psychopathic (fatal attraction, basic instinct etc) in relation to sexuality is pretty liberating, yes. its now the norm but SATC was one of the first to do it so openly. hence we are talking about it.

they say one of the funniest yet honest american shows in recent years was "geeks and freaks" but it was cancelled after one (or half?) a season. ... you can probably download it somewhere.
about 15 years ago, the wonder years was great.
edit: sjp is much sexier when she moves.
twice edit: friends is one of those shows that they can probably make spin-offs for the rest of our lives (for better or for worse). its a show that people feel they "grew up with" so they'll watch the characters no matter what happens, its like the soap opera of our time.

i think the new red & meth show (starring redman and method man) is refreshingly funny... not sure its there yet. id give it a 7/10 but its not like the other shows.
method & red live in the biggest house in a typical american suburb. one of their neighbors is a 14 year old boy who always looks up to them, even though they'd make the worst role models. his mom is like your typical suburban yuppie power mom and there's some sexual tension between her and method man (she's white). i like it cuz its not sterile like other shows yet its not just trying to be shocking like reality tv.

My female thoughts on SATC - it's one of those shows, like Friends, that I watch and kind of enjoy, then afterwards think "There were things about that that really pissed me off". The further along it went, the more I wished Carrie would disappear and it would just be about the other three; they remained reasonably interesting, believable characters, whereas she became more and more shrill and unlikeable throughout the run. SJP's acting became worse and worse in a kind of parallel downward spiral, until she became so hateful I actually felt dirty after watching it.
Those women don't represent me in any way, apart from the whole friendship thing - but even then I think 'why make such a big deal out of it, women often maintain strong friendships, so what'. Also the idea that Carrie could afford her lifestyle on the earnings from one crappy column a week was over the line as far as suspension of disbelief goes.
There were many excellent jokes though, also some good writing, so it's not as bad as, say, Bo Selecta.

i don't see how it would be a guilty pleasure. it's a good show! it's very well written and funny. no other show before it had women talking honestly and openly about sex and relationships.
and it is also nice to see successful, powerful women who are still sexy (debatable, i know...but imagine if you were in your late 30s) and have fun.
i love their love affair with new york city - the show is as much about the city than relationships.
and i have so much respect for the impact that patricia fields (the stylist on the show) had on fashion. it was the first show to bring high fashion to middle america. and she really set the trend of individual style. i actually got to meet her last week!!

True, but I would put SATC in the 'dramedy' category, that is, primarily drama, and therefore with a slightly greater responsibility towards realism than pure sitcom.
@content: yeah, that is true, but at the same time she's buying haute couture clothes and fucking Manolos like there's no tomorrow. Most women I know would have to put themselves in penury or save for a LONG time to purchase one or two such items.
There are things about the show that I liked: its non-judgemental approach to drug use, for example, in that it showed characters smoking pot and partying without feeling the need to get all He-Man about it at the end. I hate the fact that so much of women's mainstream media totally ignores the fact that a lot of modern women like to party on the recreational side of substances; all the women's monthly mags are unable to mention recreational drug use without instantly adding "but none of our readers do that sort of thing, do we readers?" or words to that effect. Such an approach disables any attempt to have a balanced and representative picture of the glossy-reading demographic. I know women's mags aim to prescribe rather than reflect, but it still pisses me off.

I don't put it down to rules either. But if what you're watching is a sitcom, you mostly get a set of characters who are the way they are in order to facilitate the comedy, they don't really have any responsiblity or need to make a lot of sense. Whereas drama characters tend to be written more as attempts to reflect some kind of real life being lived. Even if said attempt is a massive failure, that tends to be the aim. I find it hard to invest any sort of care or belief in someone whose circumstances don't seem that accurate. I mean, Miranda = bigshot lawyer, Samantha = hard hustling PR pro, Charlotte = Park Avenue princess...Carrie = one-column-writing ex-party girl. It just seems like sloppy work to me, and therefore always grated on me just enough to intrude upon my watching experience.
I'm sure I would have been willing to suspend disbelief a bit more if I'd liked her/it more (as emef says).

Miranda = bigshot lawyer = johhny cochran
Samantha = hard hustling PR pro = max clifford
Charlotte = Park Avenue princess = tara palmer tonkinson/paris hilton
Carrie = one-column-writing ex-party girl = julie burchill/miranda sawyer
crappy real life comparisons i`m sure, but if i dont think to hard (which i dont) i can see it all perfectly
and i wouldn`t be wondering how any of the real versions could afford their shoes and a few nights out
May Kasahara
22nd September 2004, 16:49
I'd put Paris Hilton as nearer to Carrie, to be honest. Charlotte is a Park Avenue princess who also has a job (the classic posh-girl standby of working in a gallery), and Julie Burchill and Miranda Sawyer are both vastly more prolific than that bony-ass blonde.

miranda was my fave too :) i love her fear of commitment.
anyhow, there were loads of articles when the show ended about how much her wardrobe cost - they estimated $8mil which i think is definitely unbelievable. i mean one of the dresses she wears in the last episode cost $40,000! but who cares? it didn't affect the plot line negatively. i preferred her wearing a new outfit each show - it made it more interesting. isn't it all entertainment in the long run?
and as far as her going out habits. people in nyc spend a lot of money. she got into most stuff for free, had guys buy her drinks, and lived in a small rent controlled apartment. she had a column, a book, and did freelance writing for vogue. and there was a whole show about how she had no savings.
