take some motrin (ibuprophrin) for swelling as it is an anti-imflamatory. that should help the pain as well, but I think some pot will do the trick.

i've been told warm water with salt mixed in is the best natural thing (by a dentist) - it does kinda work but obviously tastes a bit rank.

interestingly dentists now-a-days seem to be of the opinion that it's not worth extracting these bastards - which i'm more than ok with

Had exactly this several times... hurts.

From what my dentist told me, the swelling is caused because your wisdom tooth is basically coming through and ripping your mouth apart a bit.. but this isn't what hurts, what happens is that things then get trapped in all the messy tissue and starts to irritate and inflame, so one thing to do is to rinse with some antiseptic, salt water is really effective for this... several dentists have told me this. Really swill it around as hard as you can and get it all cleaned and disinfected... hard when it hurts that much.. but it helps.

Also, one dentist told me I should try brushing the affected bit... he said it'll seem counter-intuitive and hurt a lot.. but actually getting a brush into the infected area and dislodging things that might be causing inflamation helps a lot... then rinse with salt water again. I've done this and found it effective... though it did hurt like hell while I was doing it. I'm no dentist though... so it's at your own risk init :)

Mine did this about once a year for 6 years or so... have finished coming through now.. thank fuck. Christ it hurt.

just watch yourself. my wisdom teeth got infected and i had to have 3 operations and was almost hospitalized. it wasn't fun - i woke up one morning with one side of my face being twice it's normal size and having such a high fever that i was delerious.

around here there's this kind of disinfectant toothpaste - from spandex's account it sounds like it would do the trick nicely for these purposes, and it tastes better than that saltwater thinger (also more expensive though...)

I used to get that every so often when my wisdom teeth were coming through. The hard brushing and salt water treatment worked for me (although it's easier to tolerate the pain of brushing the infected area if you numb it by getting tanked up on whiskey first)
Ibuprofen is probably the best pain killer, as mentioned above, because of it's anti-inflammatory properties.

I thought my wisdom teeth had finished growing, but one of them hadn't and is now impacted. Basically it's cracked from growing slightly sideways so now I've got a hole in it all the way down to the nerve which hurts like a bastard if I forget and chew on that side and get anything in there. Got to go into hospital in a few weeks to have it taken out.

Hurray for wisdom teeth !!!

Other thing I forgot to mention (which is no use now I guess) is that if you do all this when you feel that first twinge, you can stop it getting to the "enormous face" stage. Next time eh? :)

I was told by many dentist I have gone to that I was not going to get wisdom teeth. all the x-rays I ever got never showed them. recently I have been noticing some pain in the back of my jaw from time to time. I think they may actually be coming in now. hope not as I hate the dentist. :(

thanks jukka :)

well they were useless bastards, gave me some anti-biotics and said if it happens again to come back...also i didnt have any money on me (even though its NHS!!!???) so they were very nippy with me and said if i dont pay the £13.09 by tuesday then ill get the debt collectors on me , hahahahaaaa . what a palava!

"you wouldnt go into a shop without paying or asking to pay after" ..
it made me feel sick that they were comparing a dangerously swollen face to purchasing something from a shop...

we pay taxes which gives them their fucking salary...and you get treated for shit for not havin 13 quid when you clearly need surgery

You usually get referred to the hospital to get your wisdom teeth taken out.
Expect at least a 6 month waiting list.

gypsy_cream
17th September 2004, 10:21
shit ok....

maybe i should just go to a private dentist, wasnt registered cos of moving house and kinda needed immediate attention... im not waiting 6months
