well first and foremost I really dig oldschool hiphop, preferably in mixtape format. I've got a mixtape by someone called the disc doctor that I picked up in germany 2 years ago, it contains all the classics in one furious mix...when da docta cuts from slick rick's mona lisa to run dmc's peter piper, I get goosebumps...
but there's plenty of good shit on all hiphop horizons imho, personally I quite enjoy the superslick made for the million dollar hype williams video productions, the "ghetto" stuff etc... tracks like ja-rule's "holla holla" or qb's finest "oochie wally" come to mind. Producers like Dr.Dre and Timbaland keep coming up with at the very least good quality productions, and a lot of stuff happening in the turntablism field could just as well be passed off as the latest Aphex Twin record...

Yeah i like some work of Digable Planets too. Also J5 and Slick Rick.
I´m more into that older stuff, so i don´t know whats going on at the moment and do not know many of them you all have mentioned.
But i´m sure i´ll check it out near future.
I also really love Lords of the Underground, Group Home´s "livin´proof" and off course some Beasty Boys shit!
German Hip Hop isn´t really my taste. Some acts are cool, e.g. Blumentopf rocks. Funny lyrics

Atmosphere from Minneapolis are the shit.
And I'm a little behind the times but there's a compilation called Beyond Real I got that's great for some dope mental shit, especially if you dig the Tribe vibe.
Also check out Tek 9's (Dego,4 Hero) Hip Hop ventures. Very cool shit.
For old or just older school: Gangstar and Black Sheep and Biz Markie.
just a drop in the bucket really.

right now is the most exciting time in underground hip hop. I am heavily into the def jux crew run by el-p (fantastic damage is sick) also can ox. but nobody better sleep on my main man aesop rock. the most intelligent mc out right now in my opinion. Mux if you dig el-p and can ox, check out aesop. you should be able to get his latest called labor days. all of his other releases are out of print. but fuck what you heard about eminem being the best white rapper, aesop puts him to shame!
also mr liff, vast aire, and others.
I'm just stoked I get to see KRS-One at the end of the month.

Been a big fan of Public Enemy for ages. A friend of mine met Chuck D, said he is the most clued-up person he's ever met. He knew about everything.
More recently, I really dig the Deltron 3030 album, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Kid Koala and Dan The Automator's side project together. It's something I really recommend to everyone.

The funny thing is, when you here people saying they’re hearing Hip Hop they often don’t know what it’s all about, at least here in Germany. For them Hip Hop is dance floor broadcasted on Viva or MTV.
Last Saturday I have seen on Viva Vs. with a mix of Jazzy Jeff. Solid Hip Hop, likewise danceable and audible. The week ago I saw extracts from the DMC-Championships from 1988 till 2000. Word-cuts rules!!
I am not really into this Hip Hop thing, but for me the Neptunes do a great job at the moment and Timbaland as well.
@mini
Is Koze producing Hip Hop at the moment? I think he’s working on his, Cosmic Djs and Erobiques International Pony project.
He’s not only a good producer; he’s one of the best German house-Hip hop djs.

@tomoki:
hi, nice speakin you again:)
think last HIPHOPthing from adolf noise was deine reime sind schweine, and thats the vinyl EVERYBODY should have whos into hiphop. its soo true what he do and say on this record!
but youre right, at the moment int.pony and other stuff, no hiphop.
have you seen the inerview with charlotte roche and int. pony last week?
Tomoki
14th August 2002, 14:31
Yes, I’ve seen the interview on Viva. The three guys are very funny, Hamburg-style. lol
I believe this week they are on Charlotte’s show again.
You got it; Adolf Noise is a great project from Koze. At first "Deine Reime sind Schweine" is only funny, but with the third, fourth...listen it´s the reality.

14th August 2002, 15:24
yo yo yo
adolf noise rules. i think it's 'fischmobs' koze and marcnesium from 'fünf sterne deluxe'. like in any other genre there's some cool guys in germany in that section too: i also like 'eins zwo' or 'flowin immo'.
but i could wet myself when i see stuff like 'massive töne', their "cruisen"-video is really the worst crap in hip hop i ever heard.

I am glad to see so many co flow fans here. I grew up in Washington DC so I had the priviledge of seeing co flow about once a month when they would come down from NY to play at pollen which was a rave/dnb/hip hop club. they were one of the best live hip hop acts ever (for me).
timbaland isn't so bad in my opinion. I like the stuff he did for aaliyha. but after a while all his stuff sounds the same. for me the best producers out right now are el-p of course, blockhead (who does aesop's beats) and NASA.
what info can anyone give me on techno animal. I have heard the name but never heard their stuff. whats the down low??
oh yeah one more cat. another white dude from the ghetto of NY. does anyone here know of RA tha rugged man??
zombie ritual
14th August 2002, 17:45
Yeah, check out Techno Animal's "Brotherhood of the Bomb", one of last year's best albums IMO. Techno Animal is a side projekt of former Napalm Death/Godflesh-guitarist Justin Broadrick, if I'm not wrong. Usually it's labelled "industrial hiphop" or something like that. He likes fat distorted drum'n'bassy basslines and all things noisy in general, on the other side there's a definitive dub influence. No wonder the album's come out on WordSound. It also features N.Y. underground MCs like El-P and others. There's an older album out called "Versus Nature" (?) with original tracks and remixes by e.g. Alec Empire or Porter Ricks...
So, my knowledge of hiphop is very little, actually I can count my hiphop albums on the fingers of my hands *gg*. But I also like very much: Sensational, Mike Ladd, Kool Keith, Scotty Hard, Company Flow, Antipop Consortium, New Kingdom (who have ceased to exist, unfortunately), New Flesh for Old, early Wutang Clan, ODB, Public Enemy, KRS-One.

Damn damn damn, where to start? The UK thing is doing some very interesting natural hybrids... because everything is so much smaller and closer here, people can't help but collaborate and be influenced by other dance musics... e.g. Big Dada which more than any other label has contributed to the current hip hop rennaisance is an off shoot of Ninjatune, so carries with it lots of the experimentalist/philosophical baggage that Ninja swept up from the old schools, stuck in thier pipes and smoked. UK hip hop always carries with it a sound-system mentality that has reggae basslines at its dusty roots, and is a direct connection to the proper dance-about-with-friends-and-family-out-at-a-block-party-or-barbeque feeling that US hip hop was infused with before the bling and (oochy) bang-bang came into full effect. Mixing that dubwise thing with party-funk humour and hyper modern r&b experimentalism is what has given us Roots Manuva and New Flesh (who are in tune enough with the true-school to get Rammellzee on their album), and now coming up on the inside are ex-purist producers and lyricists who are learning to appreciate the power of the melting pot, most especially Blak Twang, Deckwrecka and Rodney P & Skitz.
I'm not even going to start now on Boom Bip, Doseone, cLOUDdEAD, So-Called Artists, Radio InActive, Why?, Odd Nosdam and that whole spew of middle-american avant-boho-prog-hop freaks... it almost isn't hip hop but it is but it isn't but... *head explodes*
Techno Animal is indeed Justin Broderick, but I think it is mostly driven by Kevin Martin who was also in Godflesh. There are no finer bass manipulators out there... I saw their live show at SONAR 2001 and my innards haven't been the same since. The weird thing about them is that they sound as nasty and distortion riddled as anything on DHR, but if you whack them up loud enough to feel the bass, the most unlikely people will understand and dance to them... the crowd at SONAR was more than 50% female - perhaps Renegade Soundwave were right??
Do I get excommunicated if I say I like Dr Dre?

Ah yes, I know what you´re talking about. Its on Subheads FIX label No. 6 or so. There is a new Soondie with da man Shabu Shabu, who make da most crazy stuff i heared. He also made two records on 2CB and they are really sick.
I like it, but anyway its not really my definition of HipHop. I miss the flow and some oldskoolness...and i don´t understand japanese a lot. hehehe
Yeah Black Sheep...., man do not heared them for ages! Gang Starr´s Full Clip is wicked. Especially the two tracks with Jeruh the Damaja and Lil´Depp burn.
Off course all old stuff of Da La Soul is really great, don´t like the latest album.
Company Flow i like too, but do not heared the latest and last album.
Busta Rhymes first two albums are also really dope.
...ah, i recollect there´s so much old stuff that i do not heared a long time and which is really cool.
And Rahzel is fu**ing crazy ! A friend of mine heared him live, and it was absolutely amazing!!!

what about Tha Pharcyde?
they were the shit before splittin' up. saw them on tour in germoney last year, totally blown away on e those guys.

Ah yes, Premier is the man squared... Step Into The Arena is heaven... Jeru's "The Sun Rises In The East" is wondrous... Nas "Illmatic"...
as for beatboxers, the UK has at least 2 who approach the standard of Rahzel - Killa Kela does some amazing stuff jamming with Vadim and Plus One of the Scratch Perverts - his Drum and Bass beats are pretty cool. The Aspects have a beatboxer who I reckon is actually the equal of Rahzel - he can do the whole 'beats and vocals AT THE SAAAAAME TIME' thang just like the gotfather of noize. Actually the Aspects are a great under-rated UK crew - they use their own (bristol) accents, they're superbly funny but deadly serious about their skills, they do great line-swapping in the classic old school style but their rhymestyles are bang up to date, they do a brilliant stage show - I saw them supporting SI Futures, and I believe they might have collaborated with Si. I've been hearing some mental welsh stuff recently... really out on a limb, magic mushroom infused freakery.

yeah the rawkus stuff is good. blackstar are working on a new album last I heard. should be coming out relatively soon I think. rawkus had some real good artist but I think they have kind of dropped off a bit. soundboming vol 1 was awesome, but then vol 2 was kind of shitty, with eminem on it and all. the third one is trifling. rawkus is actually the reason company flow broke up. el-p addresses it a bit on his new album:
"be signed to rawkus, I'd rather be mouth fucked by nazis unconcious."

For those not familiar with the qualiity of UK bounce these days, there's a compilation coming out on Big Dada next month called "Extra Yard - The Bouncement Revolution", which shows how far it's come... it's dancehall-ragga-junglist-garage-hip-hop with r&b syncopation and proper flows with not one hankering after any americanisms on the entire thing. Very soundsystem, LOTS of sub bass, really interesting/innovative but funked up programming, just bloody greate really.
